Portland cement incorporating supplementary cementing material develops excellent mechanical properties and long term durability characteristics. India is a leading rice producing country and rice husk is considered as waste in the rice milling industries. In this present work, the rice husk ash (RHA) was added to concrete as cement replacement from 0 to 30%. Corrosion performance of reinforcing steel embedded in RHA blended concretes was studied using linear polarization, AC impedance and gravimetric methods. The corrosion rate of steel bars embedded in RHA concretes were compared with control concrete. The results clearly indicate that the corrosion rate of reinforcing steel embedded in concrete is significantly reduced with the incorporation of RHA. A good correlation among gravimetric method and electrochemical methods was observed. Electrochemical impedance study showed 98 percentage reduction in corrosion rate to the RHA blended concrete with 15% replacement than control concrete.
Silica fume is a by-product of induction arc furnaces and has long been used as a mineral admixture to produce high-strength, high-performance concrete. Due to the pozzolanic reaction between calcium hydroxide and silica fume, compared with that of Portland cement, the hydration of concrete containing silica fume is much more complex. In this paper, by considering the production of calcium hydroxide in cement hydration and its consumption in the pozzolanic reaction, a numerical model is proposed to simulate the hydration of concrete containing silica fume. The heat evolution rate of silica fume concrete is determined from the contribution of cement hydration and the pozzolanic reaction. Furthermore, the temperature distribution and temperature history in hardening blended concrete are evaluated based on the degree of hydration of the cement and the mineral admixtures. The proposed model is verified through experimental data on concrete with different water-to-cement ratios and mineral admixture substitution ratios.
Supplementary cementing materials (SCM), such as silica fume, slag, and low-calcium fly ash, have been widely used as mineral admixtures in high strength and high performance concrete. Due to the chemical and physical effect of SCM on hydration, compared with Portland cement, hydration process of cement incorporating SCM is much more complex. This paper presents a numerical hydration model which is based on multi-component concept and can simulate hydration of cement incorporating SCM. The proposed model starts with mixture proportion of concrete and considers both chemical and physical effect of SCM on hydration. Using this proposed model, this paper predicts the following properties of hydrating cement-SCM blends as a function of hydration time: reaction ratio of SCM, calcium hydroxide content, heat evolution, porosity, chemically bound water and the development of the compressive strength of concrete. The prediction results agree well with experiment results.
The biogenic corrosion of mortars adopted in sewage repair by sulfuric acid-producing bacteria was considered in this paper. Calcium aluminate cement (CAC) was known to resist microbiologically-induced corrosion significantly better than portland and blended portland cement. In this study, CAC as well portland cement mortars were tested as main binder to evaluate the corrosion resistance by the chemical immersion test. Replacement ratios of CAC were changed as 0, 20, 40, 50, 60% of OPC binder and 0, 2, 4, 6% of EVA(Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) were also adopted to increase properties of CAC repair mortars in sewage application. Setting time, compressive strength, acid resistance and adhesive strength were measured for various experiments. As a results of the experiments, the proper formulation of repair mortars was found at 40% of CAC and 4% of EVA. Finally, the CAC mortars adopted in field sewer pipe and were demonstrated to superior in adhesion and workability.
An experimental investigation was conducted to evaluate the performance of mortars with and without Metakaolin (MK) exposed to elevated temperatures $200^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ for two hours. The binder to sand ratio was kept constant (1:5.23). The ordinary Portland cement (OPC) was replaced with MK at 0%, 5%, 10% 20% and 30%. All mixtures were designed to have a flow of $94{\pm}5%$. The compressive strength of mortars before and after exposure to elevated temperature was determined. The formation of various decomposition phases were identified using X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The microstructure of the mortars was examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Test results indicated that MK improves the compressive strength before and after exposure to elevated temperature and that the 20% cement replacement of MK is the optimum percentage.
The interface between low carbon steel and blended cement pastes containing slag was investigated using impedance spectroscopy. In addition, the pastes were characterized by several analytical methods (XRD, EDX, electrode potential, pH and ICP). The electrical behavior of the interface in the blended slag systems is correlated to its corresponding pore solution chemistry and the products present in the interface. Passivation occurred at the paste/steel interfaces, in cement pastes up to containing from 0 to 75% slag content. 100% slag paste induced corrosion of the low carbon steel, which could be explained by the influence of sulfur on the system.
Considering properties of the low-heat concrete mixed with the blended cements, the influences compared blended cements with ordinary portland cement made experiments on. (1) Blended cements were superior to OPC in the fresh concrete flow that the use of blended cements reduced chemical admixture. (2) The more the use of additive increase, the more bleeding happens. So it is considered to heights, order, and rate of placement, curing methods and so on. (3) The use of blended cements increase long term strength after 28 days, but decrease early strength and durability. So it is considered to the curing methods and early frost damage, and endurance limit.

This study examined the mechanical properties and adiabatic temperature rise of low-heat concrete developed based on ternary blended cement using ASTM type IV (LHC) cement, ground fly ash (GFA) and limestone powder (LSP). To enhance reactivity of fly ash, especially at an early age, the grassy membrane was scratched through the additional vibrator milling process. The targeted 28-day strength of concrete was selected to be 42 MPa for application to high-strength mass concrete including nuclear plant structures. The concrete mixes prepared were cured under the isothermal conditions of $5^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and $40^{\circ}C$. Most concrete specimens gained a relatively high strength exceeding 10 MPa at an early age, achieving the targeted 28-day strength. All concrete specimens had higher moduli of elasticity and rupture than the predictions using ACI 318-11 equations, regardless of the curing temperature. The peak temperature rise and the ascending rate of the adiabatic temperature curve measured from the prepared concrete mixes were lower by 12% and 32%, respectively, in average than those of the control specimen made using 80% ordinary Portland cement and 20% conventional fly ash.

This study relates to a production of Quaternary Cement Concrete (QCC) prepared by using Micro Silica (MS), Marble Dust (MD) and Rice Husk Ash (RHA), followed by an investigation towards fresh and hardened properties of blended concrete. A total of 39 mixes were cast by incorporating different percentages of MS (6%, 7% and 8%), MD (5%, 10% and 15%) and RHA (5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) as partial replacement of Ordinary Portland Cement. The workability of fresh concrete was maintained in the range of 100±25 mm by adding 0.7% of Super Plasticizer in the mix. Optimum mechanical strength was observed at combination of 8% MS+5% MD+10% RHA. Marble dust replacement from 10 to 15% and Rice husk ash replacements from 15 to 20% depicted a substantial reduction in compressive strength at all ages. Durability parameter with respect to water absorption at 28 days shows an increasing trend as the percentage of blending increases.
To predict service life of concrete structures exposed to chloride attack, surface chloride concentration, diffusion coefficient of chloride ion, and chloride corrosion threshold value in concrete, are used as important factors. of these, as the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion for concrete is strongly influenced by concrete quality and environmental conditions of structures and may significantly change the service life of structures, it is considered as the most important factor for service life prediction. The qualitative factors affecting the penetration and diffusion of chloride ion into concrete are water-binder(W/B) ratio, age, cement type and constituents, chloride ion concentration of given environment, wet and dry conditions, etc. In this paper the influence of cement type on the diffusion characteristics of chloride ion in concrete was investigated through the chloride ion diffusion test. For this purpose, the diffusion characteristics in concrete with cement type such as ordinary portland cement(OPC), binary blended cement(BBC), and ternary blended cement(TBC) were estimated for the concrete with W/B ratios of 32% and 38%, respectively. It was observed from the test that the difussion characteristics of BBC containing OPC and ground granulated blast-furnace slag was found to be most excellent of the cement type used in this study.
