  • Background: A definite diagnosis should be made in the bovine practice field, however, it was difficult to perform laboratory analysis immediately. Currently, three types of portable blood gas analyzers are available in Korea. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the correlations among these three analyzers. Methods: Seventy-two plasma samples from Holstein-Friesian cows were used for blood gas analysis, and three instruments (EDAN i15 Vet, VETSCAN i-STAT, and EPOC) were operated simultaneously. Moreover, plasma calcium levels were compared between these portable analyzers and blood chemistry device, which is usually used in a laboratory environment. Pearson analysis was performed to confirm the correlation of each parameter produced with the three instruments and blood chemistry analyzer. Results: As results, high correlation was observed in parameters of pH, pO2, potassium ion, ionized calcium, and glucose (p < 0.001, r > 0.7). In addition, pCO2 showed a moderate correlation among the three analyzers (p < 0.001, r > 0.5), and there was no correlation among all instruments for sodium ions. There was also a high correlation between ionized calcium from the three portable devices and total calcium from the biochemistry analyzer (p < 0.001, r > 0.9). Conclusions: In conclusion, there was a high correlation between results from the three different blood gas analyzers used in the bovine clinical field in Korea. Thus, a consistent diagnosis can be made even with different equipment if the operator is aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each piece of equipment and operates it properly.

  • There is currently much interest in the development of instruments that emulate the senses of humans. Increasingly, there is demand for mimicking the human sense of smell, which is a sophisticated chemosensory system. An electronic nose system is applicable to a large area of industries including environmental monitoring. We have designed a protable electronic nose system using an array of commercial chemical gas sensors for recognizing and analyzing the various odours. In this paper, we have implemented a portable electronic nose system using an array of gas sensors for recognizing and analyzing VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) in the field. The accuracy of a portable electronic nose system may be lower than an instrument such as GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometer). However, a portable electronic nose system could be used on the field and showed fast response to pollutants in the field. Several different algorithms for odours recognition were used such as BP (Back-Propagation) or LM-BP (Levenberq-Marquardt Back-Propagation). We applied RBF (Radial Basis Function) Network for recognition and quantifying of odours, which has simpler and faster compared to the previously used algorithms such as BP and LM-BP.

  • Background: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) is a well-designed survey to collect national data, which many researchers have used for their studies. In KNHANES, although portable spirometry was used, its reliability has not been verified. Methods: We prospectively enrolled 58 participants from four Korean institutions. The participants were classified into normal pattern, obstructive pattern, and restrictive pattern groups according to their previous spirometry results. Lung function was estimated by conventional spirometry and portable spirometry, and the results were compared. Results: The intraclass correlation coefficients of forced vital capacity (FVC) (coefficient, 9.993; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.988-0.996), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) (coefficient, 0.997; 95% CI, 0.995-0.998), FEV1/FVC ratio (coefficient, 0.995; 95% CI, 0.992-0.997), and forced expiratory flow at 25-75% (FEF25-75%; coefficient, 0.991; 95% CI, 0.984-0.994) were excellent (all p<0.001). In the subgroup analysis, the results of the three parameters were similar in all groups. In the overall and subgroup analyses, Pearson's correlation of all the parameters was also excellent in the total (coefficient, 0.986-0.994; p<0.001) and subgroup analyses (coefficient, 0.915-0.995; p<0.001). In the paired t-test, FVC, FEV1/FVC, and FEF25-75% estimated by the two instruments were statistically different. However, FEV1 was not significantly different. Conclusion: Lung function estimated by portable spirometry was well-correlated with that estimated by conventional spirometry. Although the values had minimal differences between them, we suggest that the spirometry results from the KNHANES are reliable.

  • In this study I investigated that fire fighters utilize fire facilities properly or not, and found problems and solutions with interview and questionnaire. Fire fighters tend to utilize portable instruments. 62% of fire fighters have used fire facilities which is installed in building. The most useful facility is indoor fire hydrant, 42% of fire fighters have used that. The primary reason to avoid to use facility is that they think the facilities are not good at quick response. Almost fire fighters want improvement to enhance utilizing fire facilities. Finally in the fire scene, commander's initiative, fire fighter's ability, easiness of utilizing fire facilities, and fire fighter's creditibility about fire facilities are related to the degree of utilizing fire facilities.

  • Nowadays, the IoT portable electronic devices have become more useful and diverse, so they require various supply voltage levels to operate. This paper presents a DC-DC buck converter with pulse width modulation (PWM) for portable electronic devices. The proposed step-down DC-DC converter consists of passive elements such as capacitors, inductors, and resistors and an integrated chip (IC) for signal control to reduce power consumption and improves ripple voltage with the resolution. The proposed DC-DC converter is simulated and analyzed in PSPICE circuit design platform, and implemented on the prototype PCB board with a Texas Instruments LM5165 IC. The proposed buck converter is showed 92.6% of peak efficiency including a load current range of 4-10 mA, 3.29 mV of the voltage ripple at 5 V output voltage for the supply voltage 12 V. Measured and Simulated power efficiency are made good agreement with each other.

  • Given the increasing interest in air pollution, several technologies to measure black carbon (BC) aerosol particles have been developed. As most BC aerosol particles are smaller than 1 ㎛, it is necessary to pre-separate the particles by size before a BC measuring instrument samples the aerosol particles. In this study, a miniature cyclone separator for portable BC measuring instruments was developed. A numerical approach was used to design the miniature cyclone separator with operating flow rates of 50, 100, or 150 mLPM, and then a prototype cyclone separator was manufactured for experimental validation. The numerical results of the cut-off size and pressure drop of the miniature cyclone separator agreed well with the experimental data. The cut-off sizes of the miniature cyclone separator were determined to be 2.9, 0.94, and 0.63 ㎛ for operating flow rates of 50, 100, and 150 mLPM, respectively. Thus, the miniature cyclone separator is suitable for use as a sampling inlet for the portable black carbon measuring instrument to sample BC aerosol or PM2.5 aerosol.

  • In this study, water content in the mixture of methanol and ethanol was nondestructively measured by near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Two types of NIR instruments, portable NIR system with a photo-diode array and scanning type NIR spectrometer were used and the calibration results were compared. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was applied for the calibration and validation for the quantitative analysis. The calibration results from both instruments showed good correlation with actual values. The calibration with the use of PLS model predicted water concentration with a standard error of prediction (SEP) of 0.10% and 0.12% for photo diode array and scanning type, respectively. During 6 days, routine analyses for 3%, 5% and 7% water in ethanol solution with 2% methanol were performed to validate the robustness of the developed calibration model. The routine analyses showed good results with coefficient of variation (CV) of within 3% for both types of NIR spectrometers. This study showed that the rapid determination of water in the mixture of methanol and ethanol was successfully performed by NIR spectroscopy and the performance of the portable NIR system with a photo diode array detector was comparable to that of the scanning type NIR spectrometer.
