Mobile portable devices for wireless network solely depend on a limited battery power. Therefore, we need to design for wireless communication protocols with an energy efficiency. TCP-Westwood is one of the most important approaches on TCP performance improvement in wireless environments that estimates the available bandwidth by using the sampling mechanism. The advantage is that data can be transmitted efficiently using the estimation of available bandwidth. However, when the sender with TCP-Westwood is in a wireless environment, it does not consider of the sampling mechanism operation. In this thesis, a new energy saving transport protocol, called E2TP(Energy Efficient Transport Protocol), is proposed to solve problems which occur when the sender with TCP-Westwood is in a wireless environment. Also, when there are packet loss while doing frequent link error in a wireless environment, E2TP provides the instantaneous segment size adjustment for a more efficient data retransmission. The simulation result proves that the proposed E2TP has better performance in energy efficiency and throughput than both TCP and TCP-Westwood.

SSDs are one of the best media to support portable and desktop computers' storage devices. Their features include non-volatility, low power consumption, and fast access time for read operations, which are sufficient to present flash memories as major database storage components for desktop and server computers. However, we need to improve traditional index management schemes based on B-Tree due to the relatively slow characteristics of flash memory operations, as compared to RAM memory. In order to achieve this goal, we propose a new index management scheme based on a compressed hot-cold clustering called CHC-Tree. CHC-Tree-based index management improves index operation performance by dividing index nodes into hot or cold segments and compressing pointers and keys in the index nodes and clustering the hot or cold segments. The offset compression techniques using unused free area in cold index node lead to reduce the number of slow erase operations in index node insert/delete processes. Simulation results show that our scheme significantly reduces the write and erase operation overheads, improving the index search performance of B-Tree by up to 26 percent, and the index update performance by up to 23 percent.

A fluxgate magnetic sensor consists of a solenoid excitation coil, pick-up coil, and magnetic core. We presents the effect of magnetic core shape in a micromachined fluxgate sensor. To observe the performance of fluxgate sensor with magnetic core side width and gap, side width of 125 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 250 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and 500 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were designed in a rectangular-ring shaped core and the gaps of 0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 50 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and 100 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were also fabricated in a racetrack shaped core. The solenoid coils and magnetic core were separated by benzocyclobutane(BCB) which had high insulation and good planarization characters. Copper coil patterns of 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ width and 6${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness were electroplated on Ti(300 $\AA$) / Cu(1500 $\AA$) seed layers. 3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thick N $i_{0.8}$F $e_{0.2.}$(permalloy) film for the magnetic core was also electroplated under 2000 gauss to induce the magnetic anisotropy. The magnetic core had the high DC effective permeability of ∼1,300 and coercive field of ∼0.1 Oe. Because the magnetic cores of 500 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ side width and 0 gap had a low magnetic flux leakage, high sensitivity of ∼350 V/T were measured at excitation condition of 3 $V_{P-P}$ and 2 MHz square wave. The power consumption of ∼14 ㎽ was measured. The fabricated fluxgate sensor had the very small actual size of 3.0${\times}$1.7 $\textrm{mm}^2$. When two fluxgates were perpendicularly aligned in terrestrial field, their two-axis output signals were very useful to commercialize an electronic azimuth compass for the portable navigation system.m.m.m.

In this paper, we propose beamsapce MIMO(mulitple input multiple output) system using patch ESPAR(Electronically Steerable Parasitic Array Radiator) antenna. When using conventional monopole ESPAR antenna, we have advantages cost of hardware and power consumption of RF cirsuit because of single RF chian. But it is difficult to apply to small portable mobile device. Therefore we design patch ESPAR antenna in order to reducing volume and analyze performance of BS MIMO system that is able to MIMO communication with single RF chain. In This paper, we confirm beam pattern of designed patch ESPAR antenna is steered as ${\pm}15^{\circ}$ elevation angle. Furthermore, we design BS MIMO system using this ESPAR antenna and confirm BER performance of this system.
Direct borohydrides fuel cell (DBFC) was emerged to complement the problem of DMFC's low performance and methanol crossover to the cathode and to apply the fuel cell to portable and mobile devices. In this study, the characteristics of novel catalysts was tested to establish the electrode preparation process of DBFC. Pt black and carbon supported-Pt by paste method were used as the cathode catalysts. Pt black, carbon supported-Au and $AB_5$ alloy were used as the anode catalysts. The characteristics of the electrodes were analyzed by XRD, SEM, EDS. The performance test of single cell using the electrodes were carried out in order to evaluate the electrode performance. In the result, the maximum power output was obtained as 366 mW/mg when using Pt/C as anode and cathode catalysts.

Battery has major drawbacks including its size and life expectancy, and environmental problem. As an alternative, energy harvesting is emerging as a potential solution to replace battery along with more energy-efficient IT devices. The idea of harnessing energy from our living environment is sustainable, semi-permanent, and eco-friendly. Also, unlike battery, energy harvester does not require much space to store energy. Therefore, energy harvesting can provide a better source of power for small, portable, and wireless devices. Among various ways of harvesting energy from our surroundings, triboelectricity is chosen due to its potential to be miniaturized, and efficient. Triboelectric effect occurs as two different materials with different polarity of charge separation come into contact through friction, and then become separated so that electric potential difference is achieved. In this research, such characteristic of triboelectricity is used as a way to convert ambient mechanical energy into electric energy.Series of recent researches have shown promising results that the triboelectric energy harvester can be simple and cost effective. However, sufficient electricity level required to operate mobile devices has not yet been achieved. In this research, our group focuses on the design and optimization of triboelectric energy harvesting device to enhance its output. By using maskless lithography to pattern Kapton film and silicon substrate, which is used as a mold for PDMS thin layer, and sputtering metal electrodes on each side, we fabricate and demonstrate different designs of triboelectric energy harvester that utilizes the contact electrification between a polymer thin film and a metal thin foil. In order to achieve optimized result, the output voltage and current are measured under diverse conditions, which include different surface structure and pattern, material, and the gap between layers.

The Flash memory market: is an exciting market that has quickly over the last 10 years. Recently Flash memory provides a high-density. truly non-volatile, high performance read write memory solutions, also is characterized by low power consumption, extreme ruggedness and high reliability. Flash memory is an optimum solution for large nonvolitilc storage operations such as solid file storage, digital video recorder, digital still camera, The MP3 player and other portable multimedia communication applications requiring non-volatility. Regardless of the type of Flash memory, Flash media management software is always required to manage the larger Flash memory block partitions. This is true, since Flash memory cannot be erased on the byte level common to memory, but must be erased on a block granularity. The management of a Flash memory manager requires a keen understanding of a Flash technology and data management methods. Though Flash memory's write performance is relatively slow, the suggested algorithm offers a higher maximum write performance. Algorithms so far developed is not suitable for applications which is requiring more fast and frequent accesses. But, the proposed algorithm is focused on the justifiable operation even in the circumstance of fast and frequent accesses.

As portable electronic systems being used more often, it becomes a more important issue to lengthen the lifetime of the power battery of the system, for instance, by developing batteries of a higher efficiency. A simple as well as practical method to lengthen the lifetime is to use multiple batteries that are connected in parallel. But in this paper we present a new idea in using multiple batteries, with which the residual energy of the battery can be used in the sense of recycling. The idea is based on a usual phenomenon that a battery cell that has been used until its voltage has dropped below a reference level may still have some residual energy, due to which the voltage can recover when the cell takes a rest for a while. As a practical realization scheme of this idea, a multi-cell configuration method with a cell selection switch is introduced, and its feasibility has been examined by performing experimental observations on the behavior of battery discharge. It has been found that the lifetime of an Alkaline primary battery cell can be lengthened approximately by one or two hours with the proposed method.

In this paper, we present the design of delta-sigma modulation-based class-D amplifier for driving headphones in portable audio applications. The presented class-D amplifier generates PWM(pulse width modulation) signals using a single-bit fourth-order high-performance delta-sigma modulator. To achieve a high SNR(signal-to-noise ratio) and ensure system stability, the locations of the modulator loop filter poles and zeros are optimized and thoroughly simulated. The test chip is fabricated using a standard $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process. The active area of the chip is $1.6mm^2$. It operates for the signal bandwidth from 20Hz to 20kHz. The measured THD+N(total harmonic distortion plus noise) at the $32{\Omega}$ load terminal is less than 0.03% from a 3V power supply.
In recent years, the performance and functions of portable devices has increased. so it requires more power efficiency and energy density while using the battery for a long time. therefore Battery pack which are made up from several battery cells in series in order to achieve higher operating voltage is being used. when using a Li-ion battery, we need a protection circuit to protect from overcharge, over discharge, high temperature and over current. Also, when using battery pack, we need to Cell voltage balancing circuit that each cell in tune with the balancing. In this paper, the proposed IC is applicable by mobile devices as well as E-bike, hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles, and is expected to contribute to the development of domestic PMIC.
