  • Analysis of the thermodynamic cycle of IC engine from the point of view of economy and emissions was carried out. From this analysis potential capability of engine development was derived. This potential capability is lean-burn engine, fuelled with homogeneous mixture with $\lambda \geq$ 1.4. Several different modes of fuelling were proposed and tested on one-cylinder test engine from the point of view of extending lean operating limit of the engine, emissions and fuel economy. Among them were: fuelling with evaporated preheated gasoline, with gas (LPG evaporated) and with liquid butane. From these modes, fuelling with liquid butane injected to inlet port was selected and finally tested. This novel system of fuelling offered better than standard engine performances and emissions at lean operating limit. These results were validated on full-scale two-cylinder engine.

  • This paper describes the effects of combustion parameters on the characteristics of combustion products in swirling flow furnace. The concentration of combustion products and temperature distribution of flow field in the furnace have been investigated by numerical method. The fuel was injected into the furnace and the swirling device was constructed with three kinds of vane swirler at inlet port of furnace. The results of this study showed that the effect of combustion parameters on the concentration characteristics of carbon monoxide and nitrogen monoxide of combustion products. It was found that the pollutant formation wad dependent on the equivalence ratio and swirl intensity level.

  • NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) reduction system periodically needs a rich or stoichiometric operating condition to reduce NOx. A new method that optimizes the control of external HC injection into a diesel exhaust pipe for HC-type LNT (Lean NOx Trap) catalyst system has been developed. In this paper, these catalysts are called HC-LNT catalysts. The concentration and amount of HC can be controlled by controlling the external injection. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the spray behavior of hydrocarbons injected into the transparent exhaust pipe and NOx reduction characteristics. From the results of this experiment, we obtained useful information about the optimum injection and position of HC injector to the exhaust pipe. Further, we obtained useful information about the optimal injection condition for an HC-LNT catalyst system with a gasoline PFI (port fuel injection) typeinjector.

  • This study focused on the effects of the $CO_2$ gas concentration in fresh charge and induction air temperature on the combustion characteristics of homogeneous charge compression ignition with dimethyl ether (DME) fuel, which was injected at the intake port. Because of adding $CO_2$ in fresh charge, start of auto-ignition was retarded and bum duration became longer. Indicated combustion efficiency and exhaust gas emission were found to be worse due to the incomplete combustion. Partial burn was observed at the high concentration of $CO_2$ in fresh charge with low temperature of induction air. However, indicated thermal efficiency was improved due to increased expansion work by late ignition and prolonged bum duration. Start of auto-ignition timing was advanced with negligible change of burn duration, as induction air temperature increased. Burn duration was mainly affected by oxygen mole concentration in induction mixture. Bum duration was increased, as oxygen mole concentration was decreased.

  • Controlled Auto Ignition(CAI) combustion has great potential in achieving significant increase in engine efficiency, while simultaneously reducing exhaust emissions. The process itself involves the auto ignition and subsequent simultaneous combustion of a premixed charge. In this study, NVO(Negative Valve Overlap) system was applied to a CAI engine in order to use residual gas. The fuel was injected directly to the cylinder under the high temperature condition resulting from heating the intake port to initiate CAI combustion. This paper introduced the valve timing strategy and experimental set-up. From this study, the effect of engine speed and valve timing on CAI combustion and exhaust emissions was clarified. In addition, stratified charge method was used to extend CAI operating region.
