Our previous study showed that although the hybrid rocket engine with swirling gaseous oxygen had high performance, a direct injection of LOX with swirl into the combustion chamber of the hybrid rocket engine lowered the performance of the engine, compared to that with gaseous oxygen. In order to clarify this reason, combustion tests of a small PMMA combustor with an inner port diameter of 2 mm were conducted in liquid oxygen flow by comparison with gaseous oxygen flow. Although the oxygen mass fluxes of LOX were about two orders of magnitude larger than those of gaseous oxygen, the fuel regression rate of LOX were remarkably smaller than those of gaseous oxygen. For both liquid and gaseous oxygen, diffusion flames in the port of the grain controlled the combustion process of PMMA in oxygen flow. These results may be explained by the fact that only small amount of LOX vaporized and consumed in the combustion with PMMA while flowing through the port due to relatively larger latent heat of injected liquid oxygen compared to the heat of release by combustion which depended on the burning surface area of PMMA.

This study is to investigate particle size and velocity profile of gasoline port injector using Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA). In this experiment, a GV 250 Delphi port injector used for motorcycles was used for liquid injection. The injector consists of four holes and has a static flow rate of 2.13 g/s. The fuel used in the injection was N-heptane, which is similar to gasoline, as an alternative fuel. The test fuel was injected at an atmospheric temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ and an open atmosphere of 1 atm. The injection time was 10 ms and the injection pressure was 3.5 bar in PDPA experiment. The experimental target position was fiexd at 30, 50 and 75 mm from the nozzle tip and data were collected for a total of 10,000 samples. The experimental results show that the length diameter (D10), the Sauter mean diameter ($D_{32}$), and the mean droplet velocity (MDV) are $45-54{\mu}m$, $99-115{\mu}m$ and 15-21 m/s, respectively.

Most gasoline engines employ a port injection system to achieve the better fuel-air mixing. A part of injected fuels adheres to the wall or intake valve and forms a film of liquid fuel. The other is secondarily atomized by the spray-wall interaction. A better understanding of this interaction will help in designing injection systems and controlling the strategies to improve engine performance and exhaust emissions. In the present research, the spray-wall interaction was investigated by a laser sheet visualization method. The shape of sprays was pictured at various impinging velocities and angles. The fuel dispersion was estimated by fluorescence light, and the atomization was evaluated by the enlarged images of droplets. The experimental results were compared with model predictions which are based on OPT method. The model has been modified to have the better agreement with the experimental result, and was implemented in the KIVA-II code.
This study was experimentally analyzed to improve the performance and to reduce exhaust emissions in a turbochaged D.I. diesel engine of the displacement 9.4L. In generally, the system of intake port, fuel injection and turbocharger are very important factors which have influence on the engine performance and exhaust emission because the properties in the injected fuel depend on the combustion characteristics. The optimum results which is tested as available factors fur better performance and emission are as follows; the swirl ratio is 2.43, compression ratio is 16, combustion bowl is $5^{\circ}$ re-entrant type, nozzle hole diameter is ${\phi}0.28*6$, injection timing is BTDC $13^{\circ}CA$ and turbocharger is GT40 model which are selected compressor A/R 0.58 and turbine A/R 1.19.

Performance and emissions with different diesel injection methods were analyzed in a natural gas-diesel, dual-fuel engine under low-load conditions. Natural gas was supplied to intake port during the intake stoke to form a natural gas-air premixed mixture for all methods. Diesel was injected directly into the cylinder during the compression stroke in three ways: early injections, late injections, and a combination of early and late injections. The early injections had the highest thermal efficiency among the three methods owing to its highest combustion efficiency. The wide dispersion of diesel before the combustion initiation also allowed superior emissions characteristics.

This paper investigates the steady-state combustion characteristics of the Homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) engine with variable valve timing(VVT) and dimethyl ether(DME) direct injection, to find out its benefits in exhaust gas emissions. HCCI combustion is an attractive way to lower carbon dioxide($CO_2$), nitrogen oxides(NOx) emission and to allow higher fuel conversion efficiency. However, HCCI engine has inherent problem of narrow operating range at high load due to high in-cylinder peak pressure and consequent noise. To overcome this problem, the control of combustion start and heat release rate is required. It is difficult to control the start of combustion because HCCI combustion phase is closely linked to chemical reaction during a compression stroke. The combination of VVT and DME direct injection was chosen as the most promising strategy to control the HCCI combustion phase in this study. Regular gasoline was injected at intake port as main fuel, while small amount of DME was also injected directly into the cylinder as an ignition promoter for the control of ignition timing. Different intake valve timings were tested for combustion phase control. Regular gasoline was tested for HCCI operation and emission characteristics with various engine conditions. With HCCI operation, ignition delay and rapid burning angle were successfully controlled by the amount of internal EGR that was determined with VVT. For best IMEP and low HC emission, DME should be injected during early compression stroke. IMEP was mainly affected by the DME injection timing, and quantities of fuel DME and gasoline. HC emission was mainly affected by both the amount of gasoline and the DME injection timing. NOx emission was lower than conventional SI engine at gasoline lean region. However, NOx emission was similar to that in the conventional SI engine at gasoline rich region. CO emission was affected by the amount of gasoline and DME.
Rising oil price and environmental problems are causing automotive industry to increase fuel efficiency. Improved fuel efficiency in gasoline engine was made possible by development of DISI gasoline engine. Since fuel is injected inside cylinder directly, in-cylinder temperature can be reduced than multi-port injection engine and this leads to increased compression ratio. However, engine performance is largely dependent on mixture formation process due to in-cylinder fuel injection. Especially for spray guided and air guided DISI gasoline engine, injection direction is important factor to mixture preparation. It is because interaction between intake flow and spray affect fuel-air mixture. Hence, in this study, mixture formation characteristics were analyzed by varying injection direction using KIVA 3V release2 code. Residual gas was considered for assuming combustion. Therefore, initial condition for in-cylinder temperature was set equal to the end state of exhaust stroke of combustion cycle. Since angle between intake air flow direction and spray direction affects fluid flow and evaporation field, mixture distribution was affected by fuel injection direction dominantly.

The exhaust emission characteristics of a liquefied petroleum gas-di-methyl ether (LPG-DME) compression ignition engine was investigated under homogeneous charge, stratified charge and diffusion combustion conditions. LPG was used as the main fuel and injected into the combustion chamber directly. DME was used as an ignition promoter and injected into the intake port. Different LPG injection timings were tested to verify the combustion characteristics of the LPG-DME compression ignition engine. The combustion was divided into three region which are homogeneous charge, stratified charge, and diffusion combustion region according to the injection timing of LPG. The HC emission was reduced with LPG stratification. However, the carbon monoxide and particulate matter emissions were increased. The ignition timing was advanced with LPG stratification. This advance combustion was because of charge temperature and cetane number stratification with LPG.
In the direct injected gasoline engine, atomized spray is desired to achieve efficient mixture formation needed to good engine performance because the injection process leaves little time for the evaporation of fuels. Therefore, substantial understanding of global spray structure and quantitative characteristics of spray are decisive technology to optimize combustion system of a GDI engine. The combustion and emission characteristics of gasoline-fueled stratified-charge compression ignition(SCCI) engine according to intake temperature and compression ratio was examined. The fuel was injected directly to the cylinder under the high temperature condition resulting from heating the intake port. With this injection strategy, the SCCI combustion region was expanded dramatically without any increase in NOx emissions, which were seen in the case of compression stroke injection. Injection timing during the intake temperature was found to be an important parameter that affects the SCCI region width. The mixture stratification and the fuel reformation can be utilized to reduce the required intake temperature for suitable SCCI combustion under each set of engine speed and compression ratio conditions.
The main parameter commonly used to evaluate spray distribution is spray angle. Spray angle is important because it influences the axial and radial distribution of the fuel. Spray angles were measured and compared for the two non-air assisted injectors such as 2hole-2stream 4hole-1stream injectors used for port fuel injection gasoline engines with n-heptane as a fuel by three different measuring techniques, i.e., digital image processing, shadowgraphy, and spray patternator, respectively. Fuel was injected with the injection pressures of 0.2-0.35 MPa into the room temperature and atmospheric pressure environment. In digital image processing approach, the selection of the transmittance level is critical to obtain the edge of spray and hence to measure the spray angle. From the measurement results by the shadowgraphy technique, it is dear that the spray angle is varied during the spray injection period. The measurement results from spray patternator show that the different spray angles exist in different region. Spray angle increases with the increase in the injection pressure. it is suggested that the spray angle and stream separated angle should be specified when spray is characterized for 2hole-2stream injector, because spray angle is much different though stream separated angle is same. It was also considerably affected by the measurement techniques introduced in this experimental work. However, the optimal axial distance for measuring the spray angle seems to be at least 60-80 mm from the injector tip for two non-air assisted injectors.
