  • Automatic recognition of container identifier is one of key factor to implement port automation and increase distribution throughput. In this paper, I propose a method of container identifier recognition on various input images using color based edge detection and character verification algorithm, I tested the proposed method on 350 container images and it showed good results.

  • The main subject to become a hub port is automation. The automated container terminal has already operated in advanced ports and it has been planned for the basic planning and operation design in domestic case. The key of automated container terminal is effective operation of both ATC(automated transfer crane) and AGV(automated guided vehicle) which is automated handling equipments. This is essential to productivity of automated container terminal. This study suggests the most optimal method of equipment operation in order to minimize loading time using each three types of effective ATC operation methods and AGV dispatching rules in automated container terminals. As the automated equipment operation causes unexpected deadlocks or interferences, it should be proceeded on event-based real time. Therefore we propose the most effective ATC operation methods and AGV dispatching rules in this paper. The various states occurred in real automated container terminals are simulated to evaluate these methods. This experiment will show the most robust automated equipment operation method on various parameters(the degree of yard re-marshaling, the number of containers and AGV)

Implementing Logistics Information Systems for Korea's Shipping Industry (해운물류정보시스템의 활성화요인이 물류서비스 효과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Logistics has become a key element in a shipping firm's overall strategy, now that the concept of logistics has expanded into one that is more comprehensive and integrated. furthermore, the global shipping market is the most competitive market in the world. In this environment, shipping firms are using Logistics Information Systems (LIS), which help them to save time and reduce costs. As such, LIS has become a critical part of Korea's attempts to develop Its national logistics system and industry. In this light, this study attempted to empirically determine the critical elements necessary for effective shipping LIS implementation and to then analyze how these elements are related to actual logistics performance within the shipping industry. The research results show that the sample firms considered the following factors to be most Important to an effective LIS: the support of top management; an efficient and well-structured communication channel; a solid strategic implementation plan; and a high level of information analysis internally. Other factors mentioned as being somewhat significant included MIS organization and human resources, MIS discipline and training, software development capabilities, MIS organizational alignment, database management systems information standardization, competitive advantage, financial support and government support The main problems with current shipping LIS include the expensive cost of systems, lack of standardized working processes, and weak organizational structures.

A Simulation Study on the Efficiency of RFID at Container Terminal Gate System

  • A container terminal gate is not only an entrance of containers, but also the first input point of containers' information. Therefore, to achieve the accuracy of container information, there are various containers' numbers recognition methods used. Gate productivity can significantly vary depending upon those recognition methods. Recently, RFID which is one of the u-IT businesses run by the Korean government is under consideration for application to the gate as an automatic system. If RFID is used, it is expected to have both the qualitative benefits through avoiding defects of other systems and the quantitative benefits by improving productivity. Hence, this study aims to provide some insight on the benefits of RFID, and to compare productivity of the existing gate system with the RFID gate system based on computer simulation.

  • Acoustic and pressure type seabed installed wave sensors have advantage in observing long period infra-gravity wave and tsunami, while buoy type wave gauges which measure acceleration of the moored buoy motion are not able to detect long period waves. That's why most of the Japanese coastal wave observation sensors are seabed installed typed ones. Nationwide Japanese coastal wave observation systems with seabed installed sensors are gradually clarifying long-period tsunami profiles and infra-gravity wave characteristics (Nagai.et.al., 1996, 1997,2000,2002a,2002b).   • The Singapore Strait is one of the world's busiest waterways used by international shipping Coupled with this, the Port of Singapore is the world's busiest port in terms of shipping and cargo tonnage and the second busiest container port. Navigational safety is Singapore's concern and we are convinced that the ECDIS is the key to further enhancing navigational safety in the Singapore Strait and the port waters of Singapore. We have initiated the production of Electronic Navigational Chart data and invested in infrastructural supporting facilities such as DGPS brodcast service for use with ECDIS as well as other maritime systems.

Filtration Characteristics of the Fugitive Dust Emitting from Animal Feedstuff Handling (사료 부원료 하역과정에서 발생하는 비산먼지의 여과특성)

  • Animal feedstuff handling is one of the major fugitive dust sources in the port of Incheon. For the effective control of fugitive dusts emitting from the port of Incheon, dust control facilities with bag filter systems should be designed properly considering the characteristic of the fugitive dusts including those from animal feedstuffs. The ultimate goal of this study is thus to develop the optimum fugitive dust control system which will be applicable for the renovation of the port. As the first step to achieve this longstanding goal, filtration characteristics of soybean shell, the largest dust sources in the port, were investigated with the specially designed filter testing apparatus for this study. The variables tested for the experiments included filter materials, dust concentrations, relative humidities, and filtration velocities. Also, the filtration characteristics of the other animal feedstuffs such as sunflower seed shell, tapioca, and palm shell were investigated to determine $K_2$ as a function of filtration velocity. The information on $K_2$ will be used to design the optimum bag filter systems for animal feedstuffs handling in the port.

A Systematic Approach to Port related Problems An Analysis on the Actual Condition of physical Distribution System of Pusan port (항만관련문제의 시스템적 고찰 부산항 물류시스템의 실태분석)

  • From the viewpoint of physical distribution, the port transport process can be regarded as a system which consists of various subsystems such as navigational aids, quay handling, transfer, storage, information If management, and co-ordination with inland transport. The handling productivity of this system is determined by the production level of the least productive subsystem. So, a productivity analysis on the flow of cargoes through each subsystem should be made in order to achieve efficient port operation. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the productivity of each subsystem in Pusan port, and to bring forward problems and finally to draw up plans for their betterment. Analyzed results on the productivity of each subsystem are as follows, i) It is known that the number of tugs with low HP should be increased by a few, the number of tugs with medium HP is appropriate, and the number of tugs with high HP is in excess of that necessary. ii ) In the case of container cargoes, it is found that the transfer and storage systems in BCTOC have the lowest handling capability, with a rate of $115\%$, leading to bottle-necks in the port transport system, while the handling rate of the storage and quay handling systems in general piers is in excess of the inherent capability. iii) In the case of the principal seaborne cargoes passing through general piers, there is found to be a remarkable bottle-neck in the storage system. In the light of these findings, both the extension of storage capability and the extension of handling productivity are urgently required to meet the needs of port users. Therefore, iv) As a short-term plan, it is proposed that many measures such as the reduction of free time, the efficient application of ODCY, etc must be brought in and v) In the long-trun, even though the handling capability will accommodate an additional 960,000 TEU in 1991, the scheduled completion date of the third development plan of Pusan port, insufficiency of handling facilities in the container terminal is still expected and concrete countermeasures will ultimately have to be taken for the port's harmonious operation. In particular, the problem of co-ordination with inland transport and urban traffic should be seriously examined together in the establishment of the Pusan port development. As a method of solving this, vi) It is suggested that Pusan port (North port) should be converted into an exclusive container ternimal and overall distribution systems to the other ports for treating general cargoes must be established. vii) And finally, it is also proposed that the arrival time (cut-off time) of influx cargoes for exports such as general merchandise and steel product should be limited, with a view to securing cargoes suitable for the operational capability of BCTOC.

Singular Value Decomposition Approach to Observability Analysis of GPS/INS

  • Singular value decomposition (SDV) approach is applied to the observability analysis of GPS/INS in this paper. A measure of observability for a subspace is introduced. It indicates the minimum size of perturbation in the information matrix that makes the subspace unobservable. It is shown that the measure has direct connections with observability of systems, error covariance, and singular structure of the information matrix. The observability measure given in this paper is applicable to the multi-input/multi-output time-varying systems. An example on the observability analysis of GPS/INS is given. The measure of observability is confirmed to be less sensitive to system model perturbation. It is also shown that the estimation error for the vertical component of gyro bias can be considered unobservable for small initial error covariance for a constant velocity horizontal motion.
