This paper proposes a method for designing layout on the yard and evaluating alternative designs of the layout by applying simulation The design method is based on the concepts of the conventional port container terminal with yard layout. In general, yard design of the container terminal consists of the two major parts. One is to divide yard area between the number of sections and runs and the other is to decide the number of equipment including yard truck and yard crane. In the past days, this design was depended on the experience of the terminal operator and the reproduction of the conventional terminal layout because it is a very complex problem to be considering facilities and equipments. In this paper, we suggest a design method as a conceptual procedure used simulation method The number of sections and runs on yard area, the number of yard truck per container crane, and the number of yard crane per run are decided using simulation In addition, the traffic flow among blocks on yard layout is estimated in terms of rate.

Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) increases the efficiency of maritime traffic in terms of reducing marine accidents and the efficient use of port facilities. This means that ports and waterways have their own capacities and can be safely adapted to their capacity through proper traffic management of the VTS. Proper traffic management can reduce the number of vessels and unnecessary waiting in ports, which can lead to economic benefits of ups and port terminals. On the other hand, Korean ports and waterways have restrictions on the maximum speed for safety, but there is no restriction on the minimum speed. However, ships that operate at low speeds in ports and waterways may be able to occupy long periods of operational routes, which may impede efficient port operation. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose the minimum speed of ship for efficient port and waterway use. To this end, we reviewed the current laws and systems and proposed the appropriate minimum speed in the waterway using the theory of queue.
This study suggests a development direction by comparing the cargo throughput of the port of Yeosu-Gwangyang during 2007-2015 with that of domestic ports. It derived a concentration index (HHI) of cargo throughput in domestic ports by Yeosu-Gwangyang port docks, shipping companies, and abroad regions. The main results were as follows. First, in terms of total cargo handled, the port of Yeosu-Gwangyang was second only to the port of Busan, and the HHIs for the past nine years were relatively low. Second, the port of Yeosu-Gwangyang ranked first for total import and export cargo throughput, showing relatively stable HHIs from 2007 to 2015. Third, the HHIs of container handling performance by national shipping companies showed stable levels below 1,800. Fourth, there were no regions where cargo volume was noticeably concentrated in the port of Yeosu-Gwangyang, and it showed cargo throughput across various abroad regions. While changes in national shipping companies are expected after the Hanjin Shipping Crisis, there should be no serious concern regarding the dependence of the port of Yeosu-Gwangyang. It is expected to develop further by realizing the full use of all its facilities, diversifying the tenants in the Yeosu-Gwangyang area, and improving the demurrage rate.
An app based on the augmented reality and QR codes is developed in this paper. This app is for guidance to the harbor and management the facilities in ships. Using the smart device app people could receive guidance the course to visit Mokpo harbor and information for the port and ship's facilities. Through the utilization of smart devices, the app is easy to find the desired destination to and provide the convenience of tourists. In addition, by using the QR code people could see an explanation of the ship's facilities and write the inspection reports for the facilities.

Located mostly inside the megacity of Busan, the Busan Southern Port is a multifunctional port with various nearby industry activities, including a joint fish market, ship repair facilities, and fishing boat facilities. If toxic chemicals generated by the industrial activities continue to flow into and accumulate in the sediment of the port, they can affect aquatic ecosystems and humans. Therefore, in this study, distribution levels and potential influent sources of organic pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and butyltin compounds (BTs), in the sediment were investigated. The sediment samples were collected from eight sampling sites in November 2013 (first phase) and November 2014 (second phase). The mean concentrations of PAHs, PCBs, and BTs in the first and second sampling phages were 4174.0 ng/g-dry wt. and 1919.0 ng/g-dry wt., 166.3 ng/g-dry wt. and 21 ng/g-dry wt., and 50.9 ng/g-dry wt. and 30.8 ng/g-dry wt., respectively. The concentrations of the organic pollutants detected in the seabed sediments were lower in the second phase than in the first phase. In this study, the inflow sources of PAHs, PCBs, and BTs were found to be combustion, land, and municipal sewage or industrial wastewater, respectively.
This study analyses the necessity of the large-size shipyard and explores competitiveness factors of it. Furthermore, the competitiveness is evaluated and the economic feasibility of building and operation of shipyard is examined. As a result of AHP analysis of the determining factors of the competitiveness of the repairing shipyard, the importance of the factors was found in the order of arrival and departure safety, repair technology, dock and wharf facilities, repair cost, repair period (on time delivery), and repair parts supply. Moving distance, repair service quality, repair parts supply, arrival and departure safety, repair technology, dock and quay wall facilities, and repair period (on time delivery) were identified as key factors in the AHP analysis for competitiveness of the Busan Port repair shipyard to be built in the future. As a result of the analysing economic feasibility, the net present value of the Busan Port repair shipyard construction and operation investment project was KRW 435.6 billion, and the internal rate of return was 9.8%, higher than the social discount rate (4.5%), and the cost-benefit ratio (B/C) was high at 1.167. As a result of the study, the necessity and economic feasibility of the Busan Port repair shipyard are sufficiently ensured, and the competitiveness assessment was highly positive.
This study estimated the regional economic effects by development of the logistics complex in Incheon New Port, applying the regional Input-Output tables in Incheon. And thereby, we tried to find some strategic implications on the priority to induce more effective industries for activated operation of the logistics complex in ports. According to the results, development of Incheon New Port will generate 2,579 billion KRWs(2.2 billion USDs) of production and 1,783 KRWs(1.5 billion USDs) of value-added annually. And we expect it to induce 38.8 thousand jobs, which is over the national average on the input-output table. By the business type, port logistics industry will contribute to develop regional economy more than any other ones in Incheon. We suggest business firms in port logistics industry to be induced to the logistics complex in Incheon New Port strategically. Until now, development of the logistics complex in Incheon New Port are planned to be postponed to 2015 when construction of the berth facilities, the access sea routes and the hinterland highways are completed. We suggest to invest more public fund, to induce the private capital, and then, to develop the logistics complex in Incheon New Port earlier in an appropriate scale.
As increasing of container throughputs, port business market in Korea has been developed. However, due to the introducing of a handling fee reporting system in 1999 and surplus of facilities, port business market in Korea turned into deadly competition with lowering the handling fee. Due to the reasons, the handling fee in 2015 declined as much as 50% of in 2000. Therefore, this study analyzed whether the handling fee decline caused consumer surplus in the port business market of Korea or not. To do that, this study applied a methodology of Alexander for estimating the consumer surplus and Hausman's model using Hicksian demand. As the result of the analyzing, due to the excessive decreasing of the handling fee compared the import & export demand, consumer surplus of the port business market in Korea was decreased. However, due to the exception of transshipment from demand in this study, transshipment demand is needed to be considered to estimate of economic value of port business market in Korea in the future. Also, economic value of port business including subsidiary businesses will be estimated in order to strengthen the method for estimating economic benefit of port construction.

Gamcheon Port, which is one of three major harbors in the Port of Busan, is being operated to load, discharge and transport a wide range of cargoes, including general cargo, fisheries, steel products, cement, etc,. The harbor, designated as a compulsory pilotage area, provides pilotage services in compliance with relevant laws and regulations for arrival and departure of vessels in the Gamcheon Port area. Some academic research on the marine traffic environment in Gamcheon Port has been conducted. However, the pilotage environment and hazards to pilotage safety in the port have yet to be studied. Therefore, in this research, the pilotage environment and hazards to pilotage safety were identified, and it was confirmed that there are hazards to pilotage safety, such as vessels installed poor facilities including damaged pilot boarding arrangements, vessels blocking pilot's view by her structures and fishing nets, vessels unable to communicate in English, vessels not following VTS's order. The hazards to pilotage safety were also stratified, and the importance of the hazards was verified in accordance with a survey based on Analytic Hierachy P rocess(AHP) for Busan Harbor pilots, and safety measures to secure pilotage safety were examined to secure the safety of vessels calling Gamcheon Port.
