  • Abstract In this work. gasification of graphite cores from nickel-coated graphite composite powders was carried out to munufacture the hollow nickel metal powders which can be used as a raw materials for porous nickel metal strips. Graphite cores were gasified by $H_2O-H_2$ mixture gases at the temperature between $800^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ and nearly all removed from the composite powders within 1 hour. The hollow nickel metal powders prepared from 82.2wt. % Ni-17.8wt. % C composite powders which have the graphite cores of 21${\mu}$m average size were pressed and sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in vacuum furnace. The porosities of green and sintered compacts were 45% and 30%. respectively, and pores were distributed very homogeneously in the sintered compact. It was confirmed that pore distribution and porosity in porous materials can be easily controlled by using hollow powders as a raw materials.

  • Manufacturing process of porous glass by the filler method was studied. Commercial soda-lime-silicate glass powder was mixed with inorganic salt as the filler such as KCl, K2SO4, Na2SO4. Sintering shrinkages of mixed powders with the variation of sintering temperature were compared, and the effects of the fillers to shrinkages of mixed powder were increased in the order of Na2SO4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of pore diameter were manufactured when the filler sizes 100~200 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The open pore volume of porous glass is determined by the quantity of filler and porous glasses having open pore volume between 30 and 70 vol% are available. Available sintering temperature range for preparation of porous glass is from the softening temperature of the glass powder to eutectic melting temperature of DTA curve of mixed powder.

  • In the present study, equiatomic porous TiNi shape-memory alloys have been successfully prepared by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) using elemental titanium and nickel powders. The porous TiNi alloys thus obtained have an open porous structure with about 64 vol.% porosity, and the pore size is about 1.8 mm. The effect of preheating temperature on the microstructure have been investigated. It is found that the pore size increases with increasing preheating temperature. Moreover, the preheating temperature was shown to have a significant effect on the microstructrue of the SHS-synthesized porous TiNi shape memory alloys.

  • Fe-Cr-Al powder porous metal was manufactured by using new electro-spray process. First, ultra-fine fecralloy powders were produced by using the submerged electric wire explosion process. Evenly distributed colloid (0.05~0.5% powders) was dispersed on Polyurethane foam through the electro-spray process. And then degreasing and sintering processes were conduced. In order to examine the effect of cell size ($200{\mu}m$, $450{\mu}m$, $500{\mu}m$) in process, pre-samples were sintered for two hours at temperature of $1450^{\circ}C$, in $H_2$ atmospheres. A 24-hour thermo gravimetric analysis test was conducted at $1000^{\circ}C$ in a 79% $N_2$ + 21% $O_2$ to investigate the high temperature oxidation behavior of powder porous metal. The results of the high temperature oxidation tests showed that oxidation resistance increased with increasing cell size. In the $200{\mu}m$ porous metal with a thinner strut and larger specific surface area, the depletion of the stabilizing elements such as Al and Cr occurred more quickly during the high-temperature oxidation compared with the 450, $500{\mu}m$ porous metals.

  • Successful implementation of the powder forming process requires a detailed understanding of several interacting phenomena. The aim is to better control the process variables and to optimize the design parameters. A number of studies were carried out using various constitutive models that take the density change during powder forming into account. Most of them were developed for powders and sintered porous metals, but few of them can describe powder agglomerates, whose behaviour is different from that of uniformly arranged powders. The modification is needed to account for the effect of agglomeration on densification behaviour. Incorporating powder agglomeration into a constitutive model is of considerable importance, as it provides a possibility of relating the powder densification response to microstructural characteristics of powder particles, especially in case of nano powders. In this paper, we proposed a new powder agglomerate model in order to describe the unique densification behaviour of nano powders. The proposed model was applied to the densification of powder agglomerates during cold isostatic pressing.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to compare sintering conditions for fabrication of porous Ti implant. Methods: The porous Ti implant samples were fabricated by sintering of spherical Ti powders in vacuum and atmosphere conditions. Surface morphology, composition and phase were analyzed by FE-SEM, EDX and XRD. Results: Sintered Ti implant in the vacuum consisted of particles connected in three dimensions by clear necking without excessive oxide layers. However, sintered Ti implant in atmosphere was formed excessive oxide layers with non-stoichiometric compounds. Conclusion: The porous Ti implant can be sintered in vacuum condition preferably.

  • PZT powders were prepared by the molten salt synthesis method. The porous PZT ceramics were made from a mixture of PZT and polyvinylalcohol(PVA) by BURPS(Burnout Plastic Sphere) technique. The porous PZT bodies were fabricated from the green compacts with various amounts of PVA spheres. The piezoelectric coefficient d$_{33}$ (334~350*10$^{-12}$ C/N)of porous PZT ceramics(364*10$^{-12}$ C/N). The figure of merit(d$_{h}$g$_{h}$) of porous PZT specimens evaluating the sensitivity for ultrasonic transducer applications was improved significantly(11~70times) in comparison with that of single phase PZT ceramics(100*10$^{-15}$ m$^{2}$/N). The thickness mode coupling factor k$_{t}$(0.5~0.6) of porous specimens was comparable with that of single phase PZT ceramics(k$_{t}$=0.7). The mechanical quality factor of porous PZT specimens was smaller than 10, and thus these porous PZT ceramics would be believed as a good candidate for broad band hydrophone applications. • New porous BaTiO$_3$ thermistors were fabricated using graphite powders (0 to 10 wt. %) and their porosities were in the range of 9.1% to 16.2%. As results of impedance analysis, it was confirmed that the pores affected the grain-boundary resistance and the bulk (grain interior) resistance was constant as about 25 $\Omega$ at room temperature. The magnitude of PTCR effect $(p_{max}/p)$ markedly increased from 3 orders to 7 orders without addition of any acceptor dopant such as Mn or Cr.

  • Two-component ceramic (alumina-zirconia) composites were fabricated by a soft-solution process in which polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used as a polymeric carrier. Metal salts and PEG were dissolved in ethyl alcohol without any precipitation in 1:1 volume ratio of alumina and zirconia. In the non-aqueous system, the flammable solvent made explosive, exothermic reaction during drying process. The reaction resulted in formation of volume expanded, porous precursor powders by a vigorous decomposition of organic components in the precursor sol. The PEG content affected the grain size of sintered composites as well as the morphology of precursor powders. The difference of microstructure in sintered composite was attribute to the solubility and homogeneity of metal cations in precursor sol. At the optimum amount of the PEG polymer, the metal ions were dispersed effectively in solution and a homogeneous polymeric network was formed. It made less agglomerated particles in the precursor sol and affected on uniform grain size in sintered composite.

  • A unique porous material with controlled pore characteristics can be fabricated by the freeze-drying process, which uses the slurry of organic material as the sublimable vehicle mixed with powders. The essential feature in this process is that during the solidification of the slurry, the dendrites of the organic material should repel the dispersed particles into the interdendritic region. In the present work, a model experiment is attempted using some transparent organic materials mixed with glass powders, which enable in-situ observation. The organic materials used are camphor-naphthalene mixture (hypo- and hypereutectic composition), salol, camphene, and pivalic acid. Among these materials, the constituent phases in camphor-naphthalene system, i.e. naphthalene plate, camphor dendrite, and camphor-naphthalene eutectic exclusively repel the glass powders. This result suggests that the control of organic material composition in the binary system is useful for producing a porous body with the required pore structure.
