  • We produced cylindrical porous TiNi bodies by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) process, varying the heating schedule prior to ignition of a loose preform compact made from (Ti+Ni) powder mixture. To investigate the effect of the heating schedule on the behaviour of combustion wave propagation and the structure of porous TiNi shape-memory alloy (SMA) body, change of temperature in the compact during SHS process was measured as a function of time and used for determining combustion temperature and combustion wave velocity. Microstructure of produced porous TiNi SMA body was observed and the results were discussed with the combustion characteristics. From the results it was concluded that the final average pore size could be controlled either by the combustion wave velocity or by the average temperature of the preform compact prior to ignition.

  • At the large-sized mold fer injection molding, the remaining gas in the mold causes some problems with final products. In order to solve these problems, air-bent was drilled on the surface of mold. However, this method leaves the scar on the surface of a product. Therefore, porous material was developed to the removal of remaining gas in this study. Porcerax II, which is a commercialized porous material, were developed in USA. It requires the electric discharge machining(EDM) process to make pores on the surface of the materials. The electric discharge machining (EDM) process, however, cause the increase of the time and cost for the fabrication of the mold. In this study, high speed machining(HSM) process was applied to the fabrication of porous mold without electric discharge machining(EDM) process. Some characteristics of the developed materials machined by high speed machining(HSM) and electric discharge machining(EDM) including air-permeability and porosity were compared with those of Porcerax II. Besides, in order to be applied to the molding process, hardness and tensile & yield strength were compared between Porcerax II and developed materials.

  • In this study, the elemental mercury removal behaviors of silver-plated porous carbons materials were investigated. The pore structures and total pore volumes of the hybrid materials were analyzed by $N_2$ adsorption/desorption analysis at 77 K. The pore structures and surface morphologies of the hybrid materials were characterized by XRD and SEM, respectively. The elemental mercury adsorption capacities of all silver-plated porous carbons hybrid materials were higher than those of the as-received samples, despite the fact that the specific surface areas and total pore volumes decreased with increasing metal loading time. It was found that silver nanoparticles showed excellent elemental mercury removal behaviors in carbonaceous hybrid materials.

  • Al-based alloys have recently attracted considerable interest as structural materials and light weight materials due to their excellent physical and mechanical properties. For the investigation of the potential of Al-based alloys, a surface porous $Al_{88}Cu_6Si_6$ eutectic alloy has been fabricated through a chemical leaching process. The formation and microstructure of the surface porous $Al_{88}Cu_6Si_6$ eutectic alloy have been investigated using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The $Al_{88}Cu_6Si_6$ eutectic alloy is composed of an ${\alpha}$-Al dendrite phase and a single eutectic phase of $Al_2Cu$ and ${\alpha}$-Al. We intended to remove only the ${\alpha}$-Al phase and then the $Al_2Cu$ phase would form a porous structure on the surface with open pores. Both acidic and alkaline aqueous chemical solutions were used with various concentrations to modify the influence on the microstructure and the overall chemical reaction was carried out for 24 hr. A homogeneous open porous structure on the surface was revealed via selective chemical leaching with a $H_2SO_4$ solution. Only the ${\alpha}$-Al phase was successfully leached while the morphology of the $Al_2Cu$ phase was maintained. The pore size was in a range of $1{\sim}5{\mu}m$ and the dealloying depth was nearly $3{\mu}m$. However, under an alkaline NaOH, aqueous solution, an inhomogeneous porous structure on the surface was formed with a 5 wt% NaOH solution and the morphology of the $Al_2Cu$ phase was not preserved. In addition, the sample that was leached by using a 7 wt% NaOH solution crumbled. Al extracted from the Al2Cu phase as ${\alpha}$-Al phase was dealloyed, and increasing concentration of NaOH strongly influenced the morphology of the $Al_2Cu$ phase and sample statement.

  • Porous bearings are lubricated the oil that is contained in porous metal. Then they are always used with no oil supply, because of that, widely used electric motors. But, if oil flow out less than the limit, troubles often happen. This report shows that attempt of estimating oil quantity in porous bearing by using calculation that based Reynols' equation and Darcy's law, aimed of developing long life bearing. And comparing with experimental and calculation result, we show possibility of estimating rest oil quantity in porous bearing at steadry state by calculation.

  • Porous Ti compacts were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) method and their in vitro and in vivo biocompatibilities were investigated. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity representing the activity of osteoblast was increased when osteoblast-like MG-63 cells were cultured on the Ti powder surface. Some genes related to cell growth were over-expressed through microarray analysis. The porous Ti compact with 32.2% of porosity was implanted in the subcutaneous tissue of rats to confirm in vivo cytotoxicity. 12 weeks post-operation, outer surface and inside the porous body was fully filled with fibrous tissue and the formation of new blood vessels were observed. No inflammatory response was confirmed. To investigate the osteoinduction, porous Ti compact was implanted in the femur of NZW rabbits for 4 months. Active in-growth of new bone from the surrounded compact bone was observed around the porous body. From the results, The porous Ti compacts fabricated by spark plasma sintering might be available for the application of the stem part of artificial hip joint.

  • Simple, small and portable oxygen sensors were fabricated by tape casting technique. Yttria stabilized zirconia containing cordierite ceramics (YSZC) were used as a porous diffused layer of oxygen in pumping cell. Yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) solid electrolyte, YSZC porous diffusion layer and heater-patterned ceramic sheets were prepared by co- firing method. Limit current characteristics and the linear relationship of current to oxygen concentration were observed. Viscosity variation of the slurries both YSZ and YSZC showed a similar behavior, but micro pores in the fired sheet were increased with increasing of the cordierite amount. Molecular diffusion was dominated due to the formation of large pores in porous diffusion layer. The plateau range of limit current in porous-type oxygen sensor was narrow than the one of aperture-type oxygen sensor. However limit current curve was appeared in porous-type oxygen sensor even at the lower applied voltage. The plateau range of limit-current was widen as increasing the thickness of porous diffusion layer of the YSZ containing cordierite. Measuring temperature of $600{\sim}650^{\circ}C$ was recommended for limit-current oxygen sensor. Porous diffusion layer-type oxygen sensor showed faster response than the aperture-type one and was stable up to 30 days running without any crack at interface between the layers.

  • Graphite has excellent mechanical and physical properties. It is known to advanced materials and is used to materials for molds, thermal treatment of furnace, sinter of diamond and cemented carbide tool etc. SiC materials are coated on the surface and holes of graphite to protect particles emitted from porous graphite with 5%~20% porosity and make graphite hard surface. SiC materials have high durability and thermal stability. Thermal CVD method is widely used to manufacture SiC thin films but high cost of machine investment and production are required. SiC thin films manufactured by Si reaction liquid and vapore with carbon are effective because of low cost of machine and production. SiC thin films made by vapor silicon infiltration into porous graphite can be obtained for shorter time than liquid silicon. Si materials are evaporated to the graphite surface in about $10^{-2}$ torr and high temperature. Si materials are melted in $1410^{\circ}C$. Si vapor is infiltrated into the surface hole of porous graphite and $Si_xC_y$ compound is made. $Si_x$ component is proportional to the Si vapor concentration. Si diffusion coefficient is estimated from quadratic equation obtained by Fick's second law. The steady stae is assumed. Si concentration variation for the depth from graphite surface is fitted to quadratic equation. Diffusion coefficient of Si vapor is estimated at about $10^{-8}cm^2s^{-1}$.

  • We have deposited NiO films by RF sputtering on $Al_2O_3/SiO_2/Si$ and 100 nm-thick Gd doped $CeO_2$ covered $Al_2O_3/SiO_2/Si$ substrates at various $Ar/O_2$ ratios. The deposited films were reduced to form porous Ni thin fllms in 4% $H_2\;at\;400^{\circ}C$. For the films deposited in pure Ar, the reduction was retarded due to the thickness and the orientation of the NiO films. On the other hand, the films deposited in oxygen mixed ambient were reduced and formed porous Ni films after 20 min of reduction. We also investigated the possibility of using the films for the single chamber operation by studying the electrical property of the films in the fuel/air mixed environment. It is shown that the resistance of the Ni film increases quickly in the mixed gas environment and thus further improvements of Ni-base anodes are required for using them in the single chamber operation.

  • Porous materials play a vital role in science and technology. The ability to control their pore structures at the atomic, molecular, and nanometer scales enable interactions with atoms, ions and molecules to occur throughout the bulk of the material, for practical applications. Three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon-based materials (e.g., graphene aerogels/hydrogels, sponges and foams) made of graphene or graphene oxide-based networks have attracted considerable attention because they offer low density, high porosity, large surface area, excellent electrical conductivity and stable mechanical properties. Water pollution and associated environmental issues have become a hot topic in recent years. Rapid industrialization has led to a massive increase in the amount of wastewater that industries discharge into the environment. Water pollution is caused by oil spills, heavy metals, dyes, and organic compounds released by industry, as well as via unpredictable accidents. In addition, water pollution is also caused by radionuclides released by nuclear disasters or leakage. This review presents an overview of the state-of-the-art synthesis methodologies of 3D porous graphene materials and highlights their synthesis for environmental applications. The various synthetic methods used to prepare these 3D materials are discussed, particularly template-free self-assembly methods, and template-directed methods. Some key results are summarized, where 3D graphene materials have been used for the adsorption of dyes, heavy metals, and radioactive materials from polluted environments.
