  • Atomic layer deposition (ALD) provides self-limiting processes based on chemisorption-based reactions. Such unique features allow for superior step coverage, atomic-scale control in thickness, and surface-dependent reaction controls. Furthermore, the surface-limited deposition enables the artificial deposition of oxide and/or metallic materials onto the porous systems as long as the supply is guaranteed in terms of time in providing reactant species and removing the byproducts and redundant reactants. The unique feature of atomic layer deposition is applied to solid oxide fuel cells whose incorporates two porous cathode and anode compartments in addition to the ionic electrolyte. Specific materials are deposited to the surface sites of porous electrodes, with the aim to controlling the triple phase boundaries crucial for the optimized SOFC performances. The effect of ALD on the SOFC performance is characterized using current-voltage characteristics in addition to frequency-dependent impedance spectroscopy. The pros and cons of ALD-controlled SOFCs are discussed toward high-performance SOFC systems.

  • This paper investigates the size dependent effect on the vibration analysis of a porous nanocomposite viscoelastic plate reinforced by functionally graded-single walled carbon nanotubes (FG-SWCNTs) by considering nonlocal strain gradient theory. Therefore, using energy method and Hamilton's principle, the equations of motion are derived. In this article, the effects of nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio, strain gradient parameter, volume fraction of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), damping coefficient, porosity coefficient, and temperature change on the natural frequency are perused. The innovation of this paper is to compare the effectiveness of each mentioned parameters individually on the free vibrations of this plate and to represent the appropriate value for each parameter to achieve an ideal nanocomposite plate that minimizes vibration. The results are verified with those referenced in the paper. The results illustrate that the effect of damping coefficient on the increase of natural frequency is significantly higher than the other parameters effect, and the effects of the strain gradient parameter and nonlocal parameter on the natural frequency increase are less than damping coefficient effect, respectively. Furthermore, the results indicate that the natural frequency decreases with a rise in the nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio and temperature change. Also, the natural frequency increases with a rise in the strain gradient parameter and CNTs volume fraction. This study can be used for optimizing the industrial and medical designs, such as automotive industry, aerospace engineering and water purification system, by considering ideal properties for the nanocomposite plate.

  • An inner flow of a porous cylinder with partial slots was visualized to study fluidic phenomena in a solid rocket motor. A high-pressure chamber and an air supply system for high flow rate were used. In order to visualize the inner flow, the smoke generator with a cam-driven pump and heaters and high speed camera were adopted. The results of the cylinder type and the partial slot type were compared. As a result, the injected smoke flow in the partial slot type had circumferential fluctuations unlike the cylinder type. It was found that the circumferential flow induced from the partial slots could be the cause of combustion instability and roll torque.

  • Porous Cu-14 wt% Co with aligned pores is produced by a freeze drying and sintering process. Unidirectional freezing of camphene slurry with CuO-Co3O4 powders is conducted, and pores in the frozen specimens are generated by sublimation of the camphene crystals. The dried bodies are hydrogen-reduced at 500℃ and sintered at 800℃ for 1 h. The reduction behavior of the CuO-Co3O4 powder mixture is analyzed using a temperature-programmed reduction method in an Ar-10% H2 atmosphere. The sintered bodies show large and aligned parallel pores in the camphene growth direction. In addition, small pores are distributed around the internal walls of the large pores. The size and fraction of the pores decrease as the amount of solid powder added to the slurry increases. The change in pore characteristics according to the amount of the mixed powder is interpreted to be due to the rearrangement and accumulation behavior of the solid particles in the freezing process of the slurry.

  • An analytical characterization is presented on the transient heat transfer by an oscillating flow through a porous slab. Based on a two-equation model, analytic solutions are obtained for both the fluid and solid temperature variations. Two parameters are identified as the Stanton number for the internal heat exchange and the ratio of the thermal capacities between the solid and fluid phases. The heat transfer characteristics are shown to be classified into four regimes according to the two parameters and physical interpretation is presented on the particular heat transfer processes within each regime. In addition, the condition for the local thermal equilibrium between the phases is examined and the relevant criterion is suggested.

  • This paper studies the effects of porosity distributions on buckling and post-buckling behaviors of a functionally graded saturated porous (FGSP) circular plate. The plate is under the uniformly distributed radial loading and simply supported and clamped boundary conditions. Pores are saturated with compressible fluid (e.g., gases) that cannot escape from the porous solid. Elastic modulus is assumed to vary continuously through the thickness according to three different functions corresponding to three different cases of porosity distributions, including monotonous, symmetric, and asymmetric cases. Governing equations are derived utilizing the classical plate theory and Sanders nonlinear strain-displacement relations, and they are solved numerically via shooting method. Results are verified with the known results in the literature. The obtained results for the monotonous and symmetric cases with the asymmetric case presented in the literature are shown in comparative figures. Effects of the poroelastic material parameters, boundary conditions, and thickness change on the post-buckling behavior of the plate are discussed in details. The results reveal that buckling and post-buckling behaviors of the plate in the monotonous and symmetric cases differ from the asymmetric case, especially in small deflections, that asymmetric distribution of elastic moduli can be the cause.

  • PZT powders were prepared by the molten salt synthesis method. The porous PZT was preapred from the mixture of PZT and PVA powders by BURPS(BURnout plastic Sphere) technique. The acoustic properties with various plastic sphere wt.% were studied. The acoustic impedance of porous PZT was smaller than that of single phase PZT ceramics. And the pulse-reponse of porous PZT maded transducer was significantly advanced to that of solid PZT maded transducer.

  • We synthesized silicon carbide (${\beta}-SiC$) nanowires with nano-scale diameter (30 - 400 nm) and micro-scale length ($50-200{\mu}m$) on a porous body using low-grade silica and carbon black powder by carbothermal reduction at $1300-1600^{\circ}C$. The SiC nanowires were formed by vapor-liquid-solid deposition with self-evaporated Fe catalysts in low-grade silica. We investigated the characteristics of the SiC nanowires, which were grown on a porous body with Ar flowing in a vacuum furnace. Their structural, optical, and electrical properties were analyzed with X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and selective area electron diffraction (SAED). We obtained high-quality SiC single crystalline nanowire without stacking faults that may have uses in industrial applications.

  • Mullite ceramics have recently been utilized as ceramic gas filters for high-temperature treatment of solid wastes due to their low thermal expansion coefficient and high refractoriness under load. In this experiment, mechanical, thermal and microstructural properties of porous mullite ceramics, which were used as carriers and high-temperature gas filters in food industry, were investigated as a function of starting raw materials. Porous mullite ceramics showed different microstructures depending on their starting materials. The specimen M2 had excellent resistance to thermal spalling and high mechanical strength. The average pore size varied from 0.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 16.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and porous mullite ceramics fabricated by thermal decomposition of Al(OH)3 had very large pores and broad distribution of pore size.

  • Thermophotovoltaics is the direct energy conversion technology from thermal to electric (voltaic) energy via photon radiation, without any thermodynamic cycle. It is, in general, accomplished by immersing solid body in high temperature heat source (e.g. combustion field), in order to achieve high intensity irradiation, and by receiving the radiation thereof on photovoltaic cells. In this paper, advantages of combustion in porous inert medium in applying to the thermophotovoltaics are discussed in a view of its excess enthalpy features. In addition, the similarities of flame behaviors in porous inert medium to both in single and multi-channels are described.
