  • In this study, SHS process has been employed to fabricate porous $MoSi_2$ material with electric-resistive heating capability through the control of pore size. The preform for SHS reaction was consisted of molybdenum powder with different sizes and silicon powder with different contained quantity. The size of the $MoSi_2$ particles thus formed was determined by the generated heat of combustion, not by the size of molybdenum powder. However, the pore size of $MoSi_2$ composite was proportional to the particle size of molybdenum powder. that is the coarser the molybdenum powder used, the larget the formed pore size. Based on these results, the porous $MoSi_2$ composite could be fabricated with a desired pore size. By orienting the porous molybdenum disilicide-based material in the form of pore size gradient, porous materials used for filters with improved dirt-holding capacity can be manufactured.

  • Porous ceramics have the advantages of low density, low thermal conductivity, and excellent mechanical properties. Among porous ceramic manufacturing methods, the replica template method allows the easy manufacturing of porous filters with the highest porosity and pores of the desired size, but it also has the disadvantage that the resulting filters have low mechanical strength. To overcome this shortcoming, mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) whiskers, which have excellent thermal stability and high mechanical strength, were introduced in porous ceramic structure. The mullite whiskers were synthesized using a composition of Al2O3, flyash and MoO3. The morphologies and crystal structures of the mullite whiskers with MoO3 contents were investigated in detail. When the porous ceramic with mullite whiskers was fabricated using 20 wt% MoO3 catalyst the most uniform microstructure was obtained, and the mullite whiskers showed the highest aspect ratio of 47.03. The porosity and compressive strength of the fabricated porous ceramic were 82.12 % and 0.83 MPa, respectively.

  • In order to fabricate the porous Mo with controlled pore characteristics, unique processing by using $MoO_3$ powder as the source and camphene as the sublimable material is introduced. Camphene-based 15 vol% $MoO_3$ slurries, prepared by milling at $50^{\circ}C$ with a small amount of dispersant, were frozen at $-25^{\circ}C$. Pores were generated subsequently by sublimation of the camphene during drying in air for 48 h. The green body was hydrogen-reduced at $750^{\circ}C$, and sintered at $1000-1100^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. After heat treatment in hydrogen atmosphere, $MoO_3$ powders were completely converted to metallic W without any reaction phases. The sintered samples showed large pores with the size of about $150{\mu}m$ which were aligned parallel to the camphene growth direction. Also, the internal wall of large pores and near bottom part of specimen had relatively small pores due to the difference in the camphene growth rate during freezing process. The size of small pores was decreased with increase in sintering temperature, while that of large pores was unchanged. The results are strongly suggested that the porous metal with required pore characteristics can be successfully fabricated by freeze-drying process using metal oxide powders.

  • In this study, a simple and effective way to fabricate highly porous scaffolds with controlled porosity and pore size is demonstrated. Ti-7Zr-6Sn-3Mo shape memory alloy fibers were prepared through a melt overflow process. The scaffolds with porosity of 65-85% and large pores of 100-700 ㎛ in size were fabricated by sintering the as-solidified fibers. Microstructures and transformation behaviors of the porous scaffolds were investigated by means of SEM, DSC and XRD. The scaffolds were composed of β phase at room temperature. Superelasticity with the superelastic recovery strain of 7.4% was achieved by β ↔ α" phase transformation. An effect of porosity on mechanical properties of porous scaffolds was investigated by using compressive test. As the porosity increased from 65% to 85%, elastic modulus and compressive strength decreased from 0.95 to 0.06 GPa and from 27 to 2 MPa, respectively.

  • In this study, porous Mo-5 wt% Cu with unidirectionally aligned pores is prepared by freeze drying of camphene slurry with $MoO_3-CuO$ powders. Unidirectional freezing of camphene slurry with dispersion stability is conducted at $-25^{\circ}C$, and pores in the frozen specimens are generated by sublimation of the camphene crystals. The green bodies are hydrogen-reduced at $750^{\circ}C$ and sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that $MoO_3-CuO$ composite powders are completely converted to a Mo-and-Cu phase without any reaction phases by hydrogen reduction. The sintered bodies with the Mo-Cu phase show large and aligned parallel pores to the camphene growth direction as well as small pores in the internal walls of large pores. The pore size and porosity decrease with increasing composite powder content from 5 to 10 vol%. The change of pore characteristics is explained by the degree of powder rearrangement in slurry and the accumulation behavior of powders in the interdendritic spaces of solidified camphene.

  • Ion-exchange porous glasses were prepared by heat treatment and subsequently hydro thermalor acid leaching treatment $10Li_2O$.$(90-x)B_2O_3$.$xSiO_2$ base glasses containing various amount of $Al_2O_3$ or $MoO_3$. It was investigated how the phase separation and the cation exchange capacity(CEC) were affected by the addition of $Al_2O_3$ or $MoO_3$. The optimum condition of phase separation in these glasses was about 48$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 hrs. The degree of phase separation was rapidly suppressed by the addition of $Al_2O_3$ up to 10 mol% and thereafter suppression effect was decreased. The maximum value of CEC, about 252meq/100g, was observed with the $1OLi_2O$.$45B_2O_3$.$45SiO_2+7.5Al_2O_3$ porous glass prepared by hydrothermal treatment and its mean pore radius was about 16.3A. The addition of $MoO_3$ accelerated phase separation and leaching rate. Looking at the remakable increment of pore diameter and pore volume of these porous glasses by the addition of $MoO_3$, the effect of $MoO_3$ may be ascribed to the lowering of silica concentration in the borate phase and to the forming of water-soluble complex with silica during the leaching treatment.

  • Freeze drying for porous Mo was accomplished by using $MoO_3$ powder as the source and camphor-naphthalene eutectic system as the sublimable material. Eutectic composition of camphor-naphthalene slurries with the initial $MoO_3$ content of 5 vol%, prepared by milling at $55^{\circ}C$ with a small amount of oligomeric dispersant, was frozen at $-25^{\circ}C$. The addition of dispersant showed improvement of dispersion stability in slurries. Pores were generated subsequently by sublimation of the camphor-naphthalene during drying in air for 48 h. To convert the $MoO_3$ to metallic Mo, the green body was hydrogen-reduced at $750^{\circ}C$, and sintered at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The sintered samples, frozen by heated Teflon cylinder, showed large pores with the size of about 40 ${\mu}m$ which were aligned parallel to the sublimable vehicles growth direction. The formation of unidirectionally aligned pores is explained by the rejection and accumulation of solid particles in the serrated solid-liquid interface.
