In practical operation, the exposed surfaces may get dirty thus degrade the performance of devices. So the combination of self cleaning and antireflection is very desirable for use in outdoor photovoltaic and displaying devices, self cleaning windows and car windshields. For the purpose of self cleaning, the surface needs to be either superhydrophobic or superhydrophilic. However, in practice AR in the visible region and self cleaning are a pair of competitive properties. To satisfy the requirements for superhydrophobic or superhydrophilic surfaces, high surface roughness is required. But it usually cause severely light scattering. Photo-responsive coatings (TiO2, ZnO etc.) can lead to superhydrophilic. However, the refractive indices are high. Thus for porous structure, controlling pore size in the underwavelength scale to reduce the light scattering is very crucial for highly transparent and self cleaning antireflection coating. Herein, we demonstrate a simple method to make high performance broadband antireflection layer on the glass surface, by "carving" the surface by hot alkali solution. Etched glass has superhydrophilic surface. By chemical modification, it turns to superhydrophobic. Enhanced transparency (up to 97%) in a broad wavelength range was obtained by short time etching. Also antifogging effect has been demonstrated, which may offer advantage for devices working at high humidity environment or underwater. Compositional dependence of the properties was observed by comparing three different commercially available glasses.
The study on the electrosorption of cobalt ions onto a porous activated carbon fiber (ACF) was performed to treat radioactive liquid wastes resulting from chemical or electrochemical decontamination and to regenerate the spent carbon electrode, Cyclic voltammetry was investigated on a rotating-disk electrode (RDE) to determine the region of potentials within which only double-layer charging should occur. The application of an electric potential increased the sorption of the cobalt ions. The adsorbed cobalt Ions could be released into the solution by reversing the appling potential, showing the reversibility of the process.

To investigate behaviors of Ti and O elements and microstructures of anodic titanium oxide films, the films were prepared by anodizing pure titanium in $H_2$S $O_4$, $H_3$P $O_4$, and $H_2O$$_2$ mixed solution at 180V. The microstructures and chemical states of the elements were analyzed using SEM, X-ray mapping, AFM, XRD, XPS (depth profile). The films formed on a titanium substrate showed porous layers which were composed of pore and wall, And with increasing anodizing time a hexagonal shape of cell structures were dominant and solace roughness increased. From the XRD result the structure of the Ti $O_2$ layer was anatase type of crystal on the whole. In the XPS spectra it was found that Ti and O were chemically binded in forms of Ti $O_2$, TiOH, $Ti_2$$O_3$ at Ti 2p, and Ti $O_2$, $Ti_2$$O_3$, $P_2$$O_{5}$, S $O_4^{2-}$ at O ls respectively. Concentration of Ti $O_2$ decreased as the depth increased from the surface of the oxide film towards the substrate, but to the contrary concentrations of TiOH and $Ti_2$$O_3$ increased.d.

The present work is concerned with the formation behavior of anodic oxide films on Al7075 alloy under a galvanostatic condition in 20 vol.% sulfuric acid solution. The formation behaviour of anodic oxide films was studied by the analyses of voltage-time curves and observations of colors, morphologies and thicknesses of anodic films with anodization time. Hardness of the anodic oxide films was also measured with anodization time and at different positions in the anodic films. Six different stages were observed with anodiziation time : barrier layer formation (stage I), pore formation (stage II), growth of porous films (stage III), abnormal rapid oxide growth (stage IV), growth of non-uniform oxide films (stage V) and breakdown of the thick oxide films under high anodic voltages (stage VI). Hardness of the anodic oxide films appeared to decrease with increasing anodization time and with the position towards the outer surface. This work provides useful information about the thickness, uniformity, imperfections and hardness distribution of the anodic oxide films formed on Al7075 alloy in sulfuric acid solution.

Commercially pure titanium (Cp-Ti) and Ti alloys (typically Ti-6Al-4V) display excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Although the chemical composition and topography are considered important, the mechanical properties of the material and the loading conditions in the host have, conventionally. Ti and its alloys are not bioactive. Therefore, they do not chemically bond to the bone, whereas they physically bond with bone tissue. The electrochemical deposition process provides an effective surface for biocompatibility because large surface area can be served to cell proliferation. Plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) enables control in the chemical composition, porous structure, and thickness of the TiO2 layer on Ti surface. Silicon (Si) in particular has been found to be essential for normal bone and cartilage growth and development. Zinc (Zn) plays very important roles in bone formation and immune system regulation, and is also the most abundant trace element in bone. The objective of this work was to study on electrochemical behaviors of PEO-treated Ti-6Al-4V Alloy in solution containing Zn and Si ions. The morphology, the chemical composition, and the microstructure analysis of the sample were examined using FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD. The potentiodynamic polarization and AC impedance tests for corrosion behaviors were carried out in 0.9% NaCl solution at similar body temperature using a potentiostat. The promising results successfully demonstrated the immense potential of Si/Zn-TiO2 coatings in dental and biomaterials applications.

Pt loaded porous carbon Pt/C electrode was prepared by hot pressing process to enhance the electrode performance in PAFC (phosphoric acid fuel cell). By changing the hot pressing conditions and PTFE contents, Pt/C electrodes were prepared and the electrochemical characteristics of oxygen reduction and unit-cell performance were evaluated. The optimum condition of hot press to make electrode is 360$^{\circ}C$ and 10 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Maximum performance was obtained at 30 wt% PTFE content in the catalyst layer with 80% utilization of platinum clusters. Unit-cell performance of hot pressed Pt/C electrode was 200 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 700 ㎷ and stable performance was maintained more than 200 hr.
Finite element model capable of solving coupled deformation-fluid diffusion equations for the fully saturated porous medium was developed using Galerkin's residual method. This model was used to study the mechanical and hydraulic behaviors of unconsolidated sediment near South Harbor, Pusan. The vertical displacement of top surface clay sediment, when subjected to the external load, is significantly affected by the excessive pore pres- sure buildup and its decay due to the pore fluid diffusion. The sand deposit overlain by the much less permeable clay layer serves as a flow channel. Consequently, the fluid diffusion due to pore pressure difference is significantly facilitated, which also affects the diffusion-dependent sediment deformation.
Gadolinium tetraboride ($GdB_4$) was synthesized by reduction of $Gd_2O_3$ using boron carbide in presence of carbon. Effect of temperature on product quality was investigated. Pure $GdB_4$ powder was obtained in vacuum at $1500^{\circ}C$. Pressureless sintering experiments revealed that sintering takes place only above $1600^{\circ}C$. A maximum density of 77.1% of the theoretical value was obtained at $1800^{\circ}C$ by pressureless sintering. Hot pressing resulted in 95.5% of theoretical density at the lower temperature of $1700^{\circ}C$ under 35 MPa pressure. Hardness and fracture toughness of dense $GdB_4$ were measured and found to be 21.4 GPa and $2.3MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively. After exposure to air at $900^{\circ}C$, the formation of a porous and non-protective oxide layer was observed.
Multilayer adsorption isotherms of nitrogen and argon on the perovskite-type mixed oxides, synthesized by a citrate coprecipitation method, are determined at the liquid nitrogen temperature using a gravimetric adsorption apparatus. The volume of the adsorbed gas are plotted against the statistical thickness of the adsorbed layer, calculated from several universal adsorption isotherms one after another. The t-method area obtained from this plot is compared with the BET area and finally the appropriateness of universal adsorption isotherms is then discussed on the basis of the plot.
