In this study, we have reported an organic-inorganic hybrid membrane, which exhibits an asymmetric structure consisted of a carbonized skin layer and a polyimide porous substructure, to synthesize a novel gas separation membrane combining high gas permeability and selectivity. Both the gas permeability and selectivity of the carbonized layer significantly enhanced when compared with those determined in the control polyimide.
The electrochemical behavior of oxide layers on aluminium was studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Impedance spectra were taken at a compact and a porous oxide layer of Al. The anodic films on Al have a variable stoichiometry with gradual reduction of oxygen deficiency towards the oxide-electrolyte interface. Thus, the interpretation of impedance spectra for oxide layers is complicated, with the impedance of surface layers differing from those of ideal capacitors. This layer behavior with conductance gradients was caused by an inhomogeneous dielectric. The frequency response cannot be described by a single RC element. The oxide layers of Al are properly described by the Young model of dielectric constant with a vertical decay of conductivity.
The osmotic delivery systems are based on osmosis. The transverse diffusion of water through a porous membrane from a medium with a low osmotic pressure to a medium with a high osmotic pressure. Nifedipine tablet dosage forms of Procardia $XL^{(R)}$(Pfizer) and $Adalat^{(R)}$(Bayer) are commercialized systems of this type that push-pull osmotic tablet operates successfully in delivering water-insoluble drugs. We prepared osmotic pellet system by fluidized bed coating method, and model-drug used nifedipine. The osmotic pellet system was composed of the core material. the swelling and osmotic pressure layer, the drug coating layer, and the porous membrane. This work is performed to investigate the effect of different factors, such as composition and thickness of membrane. The osmotic pellet has been successfully prepared by fluidized bed coating technology. The drug release behavior depended on the increase of CA ratio and thickness in porous membrane. The morphology of the osmotic pellet before and after the dissolution test were observed by SEM. In conclusion, we found that the drug release of osmotic pellet depended on the composition and coating thickness of porous membrane.

In this work, uniform thickness and good adhesion of electrodeposited copper layer were achieved on AZ91 Mg alloy in alkaline noncyanide copper solution containing pyrophosphate ion by employing appropriate zincate pretreatment. Without zincate pretreatment, the electrodeposited copper layer on AZ91 Mg alloy was porous and showed poor adhesion which was explained by small number of nucleation sites of copper due to rapid dissolution of the magnesium substrate in the pyrophosphate solution. The zincate pretreatment was found as one of the most important steps that can form a conducting layer to cover AZ91 surface which decreased the dissolution rate of AZ91 Mg alloy about 40 times in the copper pyrophosphate solution. Electrodeposited copper layer on AZ91 Mg alloy after an appropriate zincate pretreatment showed good adhesion and uniform thickness with bright surface appearance, independent of the deposition time but the surface roughness of the electrodeposited copper layer increased with increasing Cu deposition time.

This work describes the characteristics of zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films formed on a polycrystalline (poly) 3C-SiC buffer layer using a sol-gel process. The deposited ZnO films were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. ZnO thin films grown on the poly 3C-SiC buffer layer had a nanoparticle structure and porous film. The effects of post-annealing on ZnO film were also studied. The PL spectra at room temperature confirmed the crystal quality and optical properties of ZnO thin films formed on the 3C-SiC buffer layer were improved due to close lattice mismatch in the ZnO/3C-SiC interface.
The fraction of $\varepsilon\;and\;\gamma$'-iron nitride in compound layer is predicted by x-ray diffraction using direct comparison method. The validity of formulation models was checked by comparing calculated results with metallographic analysis of iron nitride compound layer grown on steel S45C by gas nitriding. The fraction of $\varepsilon$ calculated by the three phase model, porous-$Fe_3N$/ dense-$Fe_3N$/ mixed layer with $Fe_3N\;and\;Fe_4N$, is 80 percent of that analyzed by etching technique. The $\varepsilon$ fraction predicted by mixed layer model is 122 percent of that measured by microscope.

The properties and effects of the electrodeposited CdTe compound film on the porous silicon. To find ways to achieve good mechanical contact on the nanostructure porous silicon layer while keeping the interface transparent, we tried to electrodeposit a CdTe compound film on the porous silicon surface. The CdTe compound film was fabricated with -2.3V vs. Ag/AgCl potential difference in the electrolyte solution containing 1M of $CdSO_4$and 1 mM of $TeO_4$. X-ray diffraction results confirmed the existence of CdTe compound film on the porous silicon surface. Auger depth profile showed that Cd and Te were uniformly distributed up to a 80 nm distance from the surface. The photoluminescence of the sample with a CdTe compound film was weaker in intensity than that without the film and the maximum wavelength was shifted to the higher energy. These results indicate that the contacting CdTe compound film was infiltrated to the nanostructure of porous silicon.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the properties of a porous zirconia scaffold coated with bioactive materials and compare the in vitro cellular behavior of MC3T3-E1 preosteoblastic cells to titanium and zirconia disks and porous zirconia scaffolds. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Titanium and zirconia disks were prepared. A porous zirconia scaffold was fabricated with an open cell polyurethane disk foam template. The porous zirconia scaffolds were coated with ${\beta}$-TCP, HA and a compound of ${\beta}$-TCP and HA (BCP). The characteristics of the specimens were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectrometer (EDX), and x-ray diffractometry (XRD). The dissolution tests were analyzed by an inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (ICP). The osteogenic effect of MC3T3-E1 cells was assessed via cell counting and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). RESULTS. The EDX profiles showed the substrate of zirconia, which was surrounded by the Ca-P layer. In the dissolution test, dissolved $Ca^{2+}$ ions were observed in the following decreasing order; ${\beta}$-TCP > BCP > HA (P<.05). In the cellular experiments, the cell proliferation on titanium disks appeared significantly lower in comparison to the other groups after 5 days (P<.05). The zirconia scaffolds had greater values than the zirconia disks (P<.05). The mRNA level of osteocalcin was highest on the non-coated zirconia scaffolds after 7 days. CONCLUSION. Zirconia had greater osteoblast cell activity than titanium. The interconnecting pores of the zirconia scaffolds showed enhanced proliferation and cell differentiation. The activity of osteoblast was more affected by microstructure than by coating materials.

In recent years, printing paper with a function of information delivery and aesthetic value has attracted a great attention with increasing market demand for coated paper that is capable of high quality printing. The coated paper for inkjet printing with high-quality of photorealistic grades requires the coating layer with a good wettability and porous surface structure in order to improve the printability of ink. In this study, the coated paper was prepared using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and surface treated nano silica sol with silane coupling agent. It was confirmed that the coating layer with surface treated nano silica sol showed a uniform pore distribution and flat surface roughness. Glossiness of the prepared printing paper was similar to that of commercial high quality photo paper. Especially, the coated paper with surface treated nano silica sol showed improved printability with excellent roundness of the printed dot of ink. These results indicates that the coating layer with excellent wettability and uniform pore distribution can be formed by using the nano-silica particles with improved dispersibility through the surface treatment of the silane coupling agent.
In binary solidification compositional convection in a porous mushy layer influences the quality of the final products. We consider the mushy layer solidifying from below with a constant solidification velocity. The disturbance equations for the mushy layer are derived using linear stability theory. The basic-state temperature fields and the distribution of the porosity in the mushy layer are investigated numerically. When the superheat is large, the thickness of the mushy layer is relatively small compared to the thickness of the thermal boundary layer. With decreasing the superheat the critical Rayleigh number based on the thickness of the mushy layer increases and the mushy layer becomes stable to the compositional convection. The critical Rayleigh number obtained from the continuity conditions of temperature and heat flux at the mush-liquid interface is smaller than that from the isothermal condition at the upper boundary of the mushy layer.
