  • Highly porous composite bioceramic bone scaffolds were developed using sintered gnotobiotic pig bones. These scaffolds consisted of poly-D,L-lactic acid (P(D,L)LA) and bioceramic materials of pig bone powder. The bone scaffolds were able to promote biocompatibility and possess interconnected pores that would support cell adhesion and proliferation adequately. The composite scaffolds were tested with dental pulp stem cells for cytotoxicity test. Cells seeded on the composite scaffolds were readily attached, well proliferated, as confirmed by cytotoxicity test, and cell adhesion assessment. The composite bone scaffold had no toxicity in cytotoxicity test on the extract of 0.013 g scaffold to 2 ml culture medium. The cells on the composite bone scaffold proliferated better than cells on the P(D,L)LA scaffolds.

  • In this study, the nonlinear vibration analysis of the composite nanoplate is studied. The composite nanoplate is fabricated by the functional graded (FG) core and lipid face sheets. The material properties in the FG core vary in three directions. The Kelvin-Voigt model is used to study the viscoelastic effect of the lipid layers. By using the Von-Karman assumptions, the nonlinear differential equation of the vibration analysis of the composite nanoplate is obtained. The foundation of the system is modeled by the nonlinear Pasternak foundation. The Bubnov-Galerkin method and the multiple scale method are used to solve the nonlinear differential equation of the composite nanoplate. The free and force vibration analysis of the composite nanoplate are studied. A comparison between the presented results and the reported results is done and good achievement is obtained. The reported results are verified by the results which are obtained by the Runge-Kutta method. The effects of different parameters on the nonlinear vibration frequencies, the primary, the super harmonic and subharmonic resonance cases are investigated. This work will be useful to design the nanosensors with high biocompatibility.

  • The polymeric porous materials which consist of polypropylene(PP) and polyethylene(PE) powder were prepared to apply to the air purification systems by extrusion sintering method. SEM analysis showed that a composite polymeric porous structure made up of PP and PE was obtained, where PE was melted and adhered to PP because the melting temperature of PE was lower than that of PP. The filtration characteristics and mechanical properties of polymeric porous materials were investigated by varying the head die temperature of the extruder, extrusion velocity, and the melt index and quantity of PE. The filtration efficiency was proportional to the quantity of PE but inversely proportional to the melt index of PE. The polymeric porous materials composed of PP and PE, which was made by extrusion sintering method, was found to be suitable for the filter element of the air purification system.

  • We prepared hydrophilic porous supporters for the reinforced composite fuel cell membrane by radiation grafting of acrylonitrile (AN) and hydrophilic sodium allylsulfonate (SAS) into a porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) supporter. The physicochemical properties of the supporters prepared under various reaction conditions such as molar ratio of SAS/AN, monomer concentration, and irradiation dose were evaluated. FTIR was utilized to confirm the successful introduction of SAS/AN copolymer chains into the porous PTFE. The pores of the porous PTFE film were found to be decreased with an increase in the degree of grafting by using FE-SEM and gurley number. Furthermore, by analyzing the degree of grafting, contact angle, and TBO (toluidine blue O) uptake, the hydrophilicity of the prepared supporters was found to increase with an increase in the degree of grafting.

  • Porous ceramics are promising materials for a number of functional and structural applications that include thermal insulation, filters, bio-scaffolds for tissue engineering, and preforms for composite fabrication. These applications take advantage of the special characteristics of porous ceramics, such as low thermal mass, low thermal conductivity, high surface area, controlled permeability, and low density. In this review, we emphasize the direct foaming method, a simple and versatile approach that allows the fabrication of porous ceramics with tailored microstructure, along with distinctive properties. The wet foam stability is achieved under the controlled addition of amphiphiles to the colloidal suspension, which induce in situ hydrophobization, allowing the wet foam to resist coarsening and Ostwald ripening upon drying and sintering. Different components, like contact angle, adsorption free energy, air content, bubble size, and Laplace pressure, play vital roles in the stabilization of the particle stabilized wet foam to the porous ceramics. The mechanical behavior of the load-displacements curves of sintered samples was investigated using Herzian indentations testes. From the collected results, we found that microporous structures with pore sizes from 30 ㎛ to 570 ㎛ and the porosity within the range from 70% to 85%.

  • This analyzed a Young's modulus (E), a thermal expansion coefficient (TEC, ${\beta}$) and a thermal conductivity (${\kappa}$) of the material with simple cubic particulate inclusion using two model structures: a parallel structure and a series structure of laminated layers. The derived ${\beta}$ equations were applied to calculate the ${\beta}$ value of the W-MgO system. The accuracy was higher for the series model structure than for the parallel model structure. Young's moduli ($E_c$) of sintered porous alumina compacts were theoretically related to the development of neck growth of grain boundary between sintered two particles and expressed as a function of porosity. The series structure model with cubic pores explained well the increased tendency of $E_c$ with neck growth rather than the parallel structure model. The thermal conductivity of the three phase system of alumina-mullite-pore was calculated by a theoretical equation developed in this research group, and compared with the experimental results. The pores in the sintered composite were treated as one phase. The measured thermal conductivity of the composite with 0.5-25% porosity (open and closed pores) was in accordance with the theoretical prediction based on the parallel structure model.

  • We studied the antibacterial effect and mechanical properties of PLA composites with in organic porous zeolite-type bacteriocides. The specimens were prepared by an intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder using different contents of inorganic bacteriocide. The degree of dispersion of the in organic bacteriocide in the PLA composite was confirmed by FE-SEM. The contents of Ag and Zn in the composite were also investigated by energy dispersive spectroscopy at different concentrations of the inorganic bacteriocide. The antibacterial effects were analyzed by turbidity analysis, shaking culture, and drop-test. The mechanical properties, such as the tensile and flexural properties, impact strength, and physical properties, were also investigated. As the content of inorganic bacteriocide increased, the antibacterial activity was increased, especially against Staphylococcus aureus. Mechanical properties, namely, tensile strength, elongation, flexural strength, and impact strength, tended to decrease with an increase in inorganic bacteriocide content, but the tensile and flexural modulus increased.

  • Three-dimensionally ordered macro-porous Sn-C composites were prepared by using polystyrene microsphere as a template. The Sn-C composites were composed of well-interconnected pore with circular shape and wall structure with wall thickness of a few tens of nano-meters. This porous three-dimensional structure is readily and uniformly accessible to the electrolyte, which facilitates lithium ion diffusion during charge-discharge reactions. The wall thickness of the composites was increased as the increase of Sn content of the composite. From EDS analysis, it is confirmed that the Sn was dispersed uniformly in Sn-C composites. The capacity was increased as the Sn content increased, which is due to Sn anode with high capacity. The Sn-C composites with high Sn content showed superior cyclic performances. Such enhancement is ascribed to the thick wall thickness and small pore size of the sample with high Sn content. The Sn-C composite with Sn 30 wt% showed relatively high capacity and stable cycle life, however, the stability of the 3-dimensional structure should be enhanced by further work.

  • Complete prediction of second order permeability tensor for three dimensional circular braided preform is critical to understand the resin transfer molding process of composites. The permeability can be predicted by considering resin flow through the multi-axial fiber structure. In this study, permeability tensor for a 3-D circular braided preform is calculated by solving a boundary problem of a periodic unit cell. Flow field through the unit cell is obtained by using a 3-D finite volume method (FVM) and Darcy's law is utilized to obtain permeability tensor. Flow analysis for two cases that a fiber tow is regarded as impermeable solid and permeable porous medium is carried out respectively. It is found that the flow within the intra-tow region of the braided preform is negligible if inter-tow porosity is relatively high but the flow through the tow must be considered when the porosity is low. To avoid checkerboard pressure field and improve the efficiency of numerical computation, a new interpolation function for velocity variation is proposed on the basis of analytic solutions. Permeability of the braided preform is measured through a radial flow experiment and compared with the permeability predicted numerically.

  • In this research, the buckling analysis of sandwich beam with composite reinforced by graphene platelets (GPLs) in two face sheets is investigated. Three type various porosity patterns including uniform, symmetric and asymmetric are considered through the thickness direction of the core. Also, the top and bottom face sheets layers are considered composite reinforced by GPLs/CNTs based on Halpin-Tsai micromechanics model and extended mixture rule, respectively. Based on various shear deformation theories such as Euler-Bernoulli, Timoshenko and Reddy beam theories, the governing equations of equilibrium using minimum total potential energy are obtained. It is seen that the critical buckling load decreases with an increase in the porous coefficient, because the stiffness of sandwich beam reduces. Also, it is shown that the critical buckling load for asymmetric distribution is lower than the other cases. It can see that the effect of graphene platelets on the critical buckling load is higher than carbon nanotubes. Moreover, it is seen that the difference between carbon nanotubes and graphene platelets for Reddy and Euler-Bernoulli beam theories is most and least, respectively.
