  • Ultrasonic velocities are widely used in the investigation of material properties. In this paper, a micromechanics model and the ultrasonic velocity were used to develop a nondestructive method to determine the density variation due to porosity in structural SiC. The micromechanics model developed can consider the pore shape and orientation. The model also takes into account the interaction between pores so that it can be applied to the material with high porosity content. A contact pulse overlap method was used to measure the ultrasonic velocities of porous SiC samples, and there was a linear correlation between the velocity and density (or porosity). Using the model and the measured velocity, the bulk density can be easily calculated. The calculated density was in good agreement with that obtained by Archimedes' method.

  • The effects of annealing atmosphere and temperature on piezoelectricity (k33) and the mechanical strength of machined PZT was studied. Morphotropic Nb-doped PZT was sintered, machined to a rod and then annealed between 80$0^{\circ}C$ and 100$0^{\circ}C$ in air, PbZrO3, and CuO atmospheres respectively. In air or PbZrO3 atmosphere, the compressive strength of Nb-doped PZT increased by 12% with little change in k33 irrespective of annealing temperature. In CuO atmosphere, on the other hand, the compressive strength increased by 20% with little change in k33 at 80$0^{\circ}C$ but both turned to significant decrease above 90$0^{\circ}C$. The examination of the phase distribution and microstructure beneath the surface of CuO-treated PZT revealed that the changes in compressive strength and k33 are closely related to the reaction between PZT and vaporized CuO:liquid PbO precipitated in shallow surface region by the substitution of Cu to Pb sites enhances the decrease in microcracks and the surface roughness at 80$0^{\circ}C$ ; rapid evaporation of precipitated PbO expands a porous region of changed composition into the bulk above 90$0^{\circ}C$.

  • The HPS(High Porosity Support, 39.3%) and the LPS( Low Porosity Support, 18.7%) were fabricated to investigate the phase transformation and the chance of microstructure with porosity of alumina support. Alumina sol was made using aluminum tri-sec $butoxide(ATSB,\; Al(O-Bu)_3)$, the membrane on porous support with different porosity and the membrane without support were fabricated. The $\theta$-to ${\alpha}-A1_2O_3$ phase transformation in the membranes was investigated using thin film X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the change of microstructure was observed using scanning electron microscopy(SEM). XRD patterns showed that the membrane on LPS and HPS had 10$0^{\circ}C$, 5$0^{\circ}C$ higher $\theta$-to ${\alpha}-A1_2O_3$ transformation temperature compared to the unsupported membrane. A similar effect was also observed in microstructure of the membranes, theoritical temperature difference were 97$^{\circ}C$ and 44$^{\circ}C$ by Crapeyron equation.

  • The physical and chemical analyses of mineral waste such as moisture content, water absorption, freezing-thawing resisting sexual, chemical composition and crystal structure were investigated. In the technological process of crushing, screening, molding, drying, preheating, sintering and cooling, many parameters were changed to eliminate the influence of freeze thaw stability and the ball billets were processed into slate ceramsites eventually. Adopting orthogonal experiment and range analysis, the optimal technology parameters were confirmed as preheating temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ for 25 minutes and sintering temperature of $1230^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes. Slate wastes in Shangri-la could foam and expand without any additive. The ultra-light ceramsite could be directly used as building aggregate, since the analysis results of its leaching toxicity were eligible. Besides, effects of sintering temperature on physical property and crystal phase were also explored in this study.

  • Aerosol deposition(AD) coating that enable fabricate films at low temperature have begun to be widely researched for the integration of ceramics as well to realize high-speed deposition rates. For application of ceramic thick film by AD to display and electronic ceramic industry, fabrication of dense structure with a no cracking is required. In this study, to fabricate dense ceramic thick film, the effect of crystal phase of starting powder was investigated. For this study, amorphous and crystalline $SiO_2$ powders were used as starting powders. Two types of $SiO_2$ powders were deposited on glass substrate by AD. In the case of amorphous $SiO_2$ powder, the deposited films had extremely incompact and opaque layer, irrespective of particle size. In contrast to amorphous powder, in the case of crystalline powder, porous structure layer and dense microstructure with no cracking layer were fabricated depending on the particle size. The optimized starting powder size for dense coating layer was $1{\sim}2{\mu}m$. The transmittance of film reached a maximum of 76% at 800 nm.

  • BCY($Ba(Ce_{0.9}Y_{0.1})O_{3-\delta}$) oxide, shows high protonic conductivity at high temperatures, and are referred to as hydrogen separation membrane. For high efficiency of hydrogen separation ($H_2$ flux and selectivity) and low fabrication cost, ultimate thin and dense BCY-Ni layer have to be coated on a porous substrate such as $ZrO_2$. Aerosol depostion (AD) process is a novel technique to grow ceramic film with high density and nano-crystal structure at room-temperature, and would be applied to the fabrication process of AD integration ceramic layer effectively. XRD and SEM measurements were conducted in order to analyze the characteristics of BCY-Ni membrane fabricated by AD process.

  • Reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) was encapsulated in transparent porous sol-gel silicate gels using by different organoalkoxysilane precursor. Characteristics optical absorption and fluorescence of NADH in the gels were examined with depending on NADH concentration and compared. Optical absorption in the aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) gel is highest and remains constant during aging the gel. Thus, it is found that NADH in the APTMS gel is most stable and activated. On the other hand, methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) gel presents the lowest optical absorption diminishing with aging the gel. Measurable increase of fluorescence with raising the NADH concentration is observed except for the APTMS gel due to its solubility in the buffer during fluorescence measurement.

  • Thin film composite membranes incorporated with nano-sized hydrophilic zeolite -A were successfully prepared via interfacial polymerization (IP) on porous blend PES/PAN support for water desalination. The thin film nanocomposite membranes were characterized by SEM, contact angle and performance test with 7000 ppm NaCl solution at 7bar. The results showed that the optimum zeolite loading amount was determined to be 0.1wt% with permeate flux 29LMH.NaCl rejection was improved from 69% to 92% compared to the pristine polyamide membrane where the modified PA surface was more selective than that of the pristine PA. In addition, there was no significant change in the permeate flux of the thin film nanocomposite membrane compared with that of the pristine PA in spite of the formation of the dense polyamide layer. The stability of the polyamide layer was investigated for 15 days and the optimized membrane presented the highest durability and stability.

  • Dental ceramics have good aesthetics, biocompatibility, low thermal conductivity, abrasion resistance, and color stability. However poor resistance to fracture and shrinkage during firing process have been limiting factors in their use, particularly in multiunit ceramic restorations. A new method for making all-ceramic crowns that have high strength and low processing shrinkage has been developed and is referred to as the Vita In-Ceram method. This study was performed to investigate the effect of $CeO_2$ addition in borosilicate glasses on the strength of alumina-glass composites. Porous alumina compacts were prepared by slip casting and sintered at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Dense composites were made by infiltration of molten glass into partially sintered alumina at $1,140^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. Specimens were polished sequentially from #800 to #2000 diamond disk. and the final surface finishing on the tensile side was received an additional polishing sequence through $1{\mu}m$ diamond paste. Biaxial flexure test was conducted by using ball-on-three-ball method at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. To examine the microstructural aspect of crack propagation in the alumina-glass composites, Vickers-produced indentation crack was made on the tensile surface at a load of 98.0 N and dwell time of 15 sec, and the radial crack patterns were examined by an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The porosity rates of partially sintered alumina decreased with the rising of firing temperature. 2. The maximum biaxial flexure strength of 423.5MPa in alumina-glass composites was obtained with an addition of 3 mol% $CeO_2$ in glass composition and strength values showed the aspect of decrease with the increase of $CeO_2$ content. 3 The biaxial flexure strength values of alumina-glass composites were decreased with rising the firing temperature. 4. Observation of the fracture surfaces of alumina-glass composites indicated that the enhancement of strength in alumina-glass composites was due to the frictional or geometrical inter-locking of rough fracture surfaces and ligamentary bridging by intact islands of materials left behind the fracture front.
