  • The study on ice thermal storage system is to improve total system performance and increase the economical efficiency in actual air-conditioning facilities. To obtain the high charging and discharging efficiencies in ice thermal storage system, the improvement of thermal stratification is essential, therefore the process flow must be piston flow in the cylindrical type. In the influence of the inlet port type, the inflowing water in the distributor type diffuses through the whole storage tank more than in the slot type. In case of the flow process in the ice storage tank, the upward flow type in the charging process and the downward flow type in the discharging process make the stratification well, thereby the loss of energy wored be smaller. The influence of the inlet temperature difference and the change of the inlet flow rate is intensive when the temperature difference is larger, the flow rate is smaller in case of charging and the results are opposite in case of discharging with the reason that the good coduction condition. The total effeciency of the ice thermal storge system is 73% on condition that the porosity in the thermal storage tank is 0.55. This result shows that cylinderical ice storage tank has better storage capacity than rectangular type in case of the same porosity.

  • This paper proposes the use of a porous core between layers of laminated composite plates to examine its effect on the natural frequencies of the resulted porous laminated composite sandwich plate (PLCSP) resting on a two-parameter elastic foundation. Moreover, it has been suggested that the dispersion of porosity has two different functionally graded (FG) patterns which are compared with a uniformly dispersed (UD) profile to find their best vibrational efficiency in the proposed PLCSPs. In FG patterns, two types of dispersions, including symmetric (FG-S) and asymmetric (FG-A) patterns have been considered. To derive the governing Eigen value equation of such structures, the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) of plates has been employed. Accordingly, a finite element method (FEM) is developed to solve the derived Eigen value equation. Using the mentioned theory and method, the effects of porosity parameters, fiber orientation of laminated composite, geometrical dimensions, boundary conditions and elastic foundation on the natural frequencies of the proposed PLCSPs have been studied. It is observed that embedding porosity in core layer leads to a significant improvement in the natural frequencies of PLCSPs. Moreover, the natural frequencies of PLCSPs with FG porous core are higher than those with UD porous core.

  • In order to provide sufficient stability and resistance against bleeding and segregation during transportation and placing, mineral admixtures are often used in self-compacting concrete mixes (SCC). These fine materials also contribute to reducing the construction cost and the consumption of natural resources. Many studies have confirmed the benefits of these mineral admixtures on properties of SCC in standard curing conditions. However, there are few published reports regarding their effects at elevated curing temperatures. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of three different mineral admixtures namely limestone powder (LP), granulated blast furnace slag (GS) and natural pozzolana (PZ) on mechanical properties and porosity of SCC when exposed to different curing temperatures (20, 40, 60 and $80^{\circ}C$). The level of substitution of cement by mineral admixture was fixed at 15%. The results showed that increasing curing temperature causes an improvement in performance at an early age without penalizing its long-term properties. However the temperature of $40^{\circ}C$ is considered the optimal curing temperature to make economical and high performance SCC. On the other hand, GS is the most suitable mineral admixture for SCC under elevated curing temperature.

  • There are the impregnating layer formation by surface protective materials or impregnants and the adhesion method by polymer, FRP sheet or steel plate in the surface protective method of concrete structure. The surface impregnation method by impregnants improves the durability of concrete structure by modifying the structure of the concrete surface and also have a merit that can be shortly applied in place without the decrease of concrete surface appearance and is easily applied again. This study is interested in manufacturing the concrete surface impregnants including lithium and potassium silicate for the repair of the exposed concrete and the color concrete requiring the advanced function in view of the concrete appearance. The durability and porosity properties was tested for the review of application. The result of this study show that the effective content of silicate ranges 5 to 20% and the separate application of the first impregnant and the second impregnant is effective for the optimum performance. The adhesion in tension is slightly increased but the reinforcement of concrete substrate is slight. So, the concrete impregnant of this study is more desirable for the improvement of durability rather than the reinforcement.

  • The transmission loss(TL) has been widely used as the acoustic performance index of industrial mufflers. Industrial mufflers usually consist of several partitions with perforated plate. In this study, firstly, the computational model for a typical industrial muffler was performed and validated by comparing with the experimental results. Secondly, the effects of the porosity of the perforated plates on the acoustical TL were investigated and the database of the tendencies were set up. Finally, on the basis of these tendencies, the modified muffler with better TL than conventional one could be suggested.

  • The voltage profile during discharge of the zinc air battery has very flat pattern until reach to end of discharge voltage. But, when zinc air battery is discharged by high current, the discharge voltage and energy becomes low. Therefore, we focused on effects of catalyst size to solve this problems by increasing active sites of oxygen reduction reaction. The size of catalyst was reduced from 27 to l${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and we examined average discharge voltage, capacity, energy, resistance and characteristics during GSM pulse discharge of zinc air battery with change of current density. And we also measured porosity of the cathode according to the ASTM. So we have got improvement of average discharge voltage and energy when catalyst was minimized and we have got optimum size of catalyst at 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

  • The use of shotcrete-sprayed concrete for the support of underground excavations was pioneered by the civil engineering. Now, for the nuclear wastes disposal plant in our country, watertightness of shotcrete is one of the very important properties. This study evaluated the watertightness of shotcrete using cement mineral accelerator with watertightness materials for the long-term watertightness. In this study, for improvement of watertightness of shotcrete, it used two types of obtainable at a store. Watertightness tests of shotcrete were performed the water absorption coefficient, permeability, porosity and hydrates variation. In a shotcrete containing watertightness materials, watertightness of shotcrete was improved about $15%{\sim}65%$ rather than plain shotcrete.

  • Conventional high-speed steels, which are carbide decentralized materials, are used for sliding parts, but they lack sufficient hardness for some applications. Improvement of surface hardness is possible for high-Cr steels through nitriding. However, nitriding P/M parts is not advisable without sealing the porosity before treatment, as they will become brittle. However, it is difficult to seal the pores with steam treatment, because high-Cr steel has a passive film on the surface. Controlling nitriding by decreasing the amount of oxygen on the surface to be nitrided, and grinding to decrease the porosity of the surface, makes it possible to produce a material that has reasonable and sufficient hardness in the required areas.

  • In this study, the porous structure inside the hair were observed using an optical microscope without damaging the hair, and the porosity inside the hair was quantitatively expressed using the results. Experiments were conducted on the effect of the decrease in density inside the hair on the bending and tensile properties of the hair, and experiments on endogenous and extrinsic factors were conducted to find out the causes of the decrease in density inside the hair. As for the endogenous factor, the porosity of gray hair, one of the representative symptoms of aging, was compared with normal hair. As for extrinsic factors, it was observed that the internal density of hair decreased by surfactant and heat, which are factors that can cause hair damage in daily life. In addition, we confirmed whether it is possible to increase the internal density and luster of the hair by using an amino acids and material that can prevent hair lipid predisposition.
