Effective thermal conductivities and pressure-drop-related properties of aluminum foam metals have been measured. The effects of porosity and cell size in the aluminum foam metal are investigated in detail. The porosity of the foam metal, considered in the present study, varies from 0.89 to 0.96 and the cell size from 0.65㎜ to 2.5㎜. The effective thermal conductivity is evaluated by comparing the temperature gradient of the foam metal with that of the thermal conductivity-known material. The pressure drop in the foam metal is measured by a highly precise electric manometer while air is flowing through the aluminum foam metal in the channel. The results obtained indicate that the effective thermal conductivities are found to be increased with a decrease in the porosity while the effective thermal conductivities ire little affected by the cell size at a fixed porosity. However, the pressure drop is strongly affected by the cell size as well as the porosity. It is seen that the pressure drop is increased as the cell size becomes smaller, as expected. The minimum pressure drop is obtained in the porosity 0.94 at a fixed cell size. A new correlation of the pressure drop is proposed based on the permeability and Ergun's coefficient for the aluminum foam metal.
Porous media containing complex fluid passage have especially large surface area per unit volume. This study is aimed to identify the heat transfer characteristics of high-porosity metal foams in a horizontal channel. Experiment is performed under various heat flux, velocity and pore density. Nusselt number decreases with higher pore density. Metal foams shows higher heat transfer coefficients than pin-fin structure with the same porosity. This is due to the more complex flow passage and larger heat transfer area based on the structure of the metal foams. The analysis on the pin-fin structure may not be suitable to the metal foam structure but should be identified extensively through further study.
Generally, porosity which was formed by pyrolysis of the primer is usually generated in the weld metal in respect of increase of the welding speed. in order to analyze the cause of porosity generation, this study was performed using FCAW(flux cored arc welding) process for three kinds of inorganic.zinc primer. in addition the evaluation by influence of welding method on porosity generation is conducted to compare between FCAW and MAG(metal active gas) welding with the same inorganic zinc primer. As the result of this investigation, not only primer of lower organic binder and zinc but also FCAW process than MAG in fillet welding have been verified the excellent resistance to the porosity generation for horizontal fillet welding.

Based on first-order shear deformation theory, a wave propagation model of graphene platelets reinforced metal foams (GPLRMFs) circular plates is built in this paper. The expressions of phase-/group- velocities and wave number are obtained by using Laplace integral transformation and Hankel integral transformation. The effects of GPLs pattern, foams distribution, GPLs weight fraction and foam coefficient on the phase and group velocity of GPLRMFs circular plates are discussed in detail. It can be inferred that GPLs distribution have great impacts on the wave propagation problems, and Porosity-I type distribution has the largest phase velocity and group velocity, followed by Porosity-III, and finally Porosity-II; With the increase of the GPLs weight fraction, the phase- and group- velocities for the GPLRMFs circular plate will be increased; With the increase of the foam coefficient, the phase- and group- velocities for the GPLRMFs circular plate will be decreased.
Three different welding wires were used to study the effects of Al content on weld metal toughness and porosity formation in self-shielded arc welding. Weld metal microstructure showed that while wire with 1.3% Al content contains coarse $\delta$-ferrite, wires with less than 0.5% Al content showed no such phase. In addition to the microstructural differences, cleanliness in weld metal was also different among wires. It showed that weld metal toughness was influenced by the $\delta$-ferrite formation, cleanliness and Ni addition. Even though wires with less than 0.5% Al content showed higher weld metal toughness, they showed relatively poor workability, forming porosities in weld bead in lower arc voltages.
The high-pressure die-casting is one of the most effective methods to produce a large amount of products in short cycle time. This process, however, has a problem that the gas porosity defect appears easily. The generation of gas porosity is known mainly due to the air entrapment during the injection stage. Most of numerical simulations for the molten metal flow pattern observations have done in the treating of one phase fluid flow but the gas-liquid interface is essentially multi- phase phenomenon. In this paper, the two-phase fluid flow numerical simulation methods have been adapted to predict the gas porosity generations in the molten metal. The accuracy and the usefulness of the new simulation module have been emphasized and verified through some comparison experiments.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of welding parameters such as shielding gas compositions welding voltage and welding current on the pore formation in the weld beads of galvanized steel pipes produced with gas metal arc welding. The porosity was evaluated and rated by metallography and radiographic test in terms of weight percentage, number and distribution of pores in weld beads. The porosity increased with increasing welding voltage and current, in which Ar gas produced the most porosity while $Ar+5%O_2$ generated the least porosity. It was found that the porosity could be reduced by selection of the proper gas mixture composition such as $Ar+5%O_2$ and $Ar+10%CO_2$ and by using current (130~150A) and voltage(16~20V).
Major problems in welding Al-7020 include shrinkage, rpopositgy in welds and loss of strength in the heat affected zone. Thus it is important to examine the mechanical properties and reliability of welds. In this study, a series of experiments was carried out to determine the mechanical properties such as micro-hardness distribution, tensile strength, porosity and residual stress distribution of the Al-7020 weldment made by pulse-GMA welding. The resuts of the experiemnts are as folows. 1) The micro-hardness of weld metal and heat affected zone was lower than that of the base metal. 2) The tensile strength of the deposited metal was much lower than that of the base metal. 3) The porrosity in weld metal zone was negligible under the adopted conditsion of experiemnts. 4) The residual stress in the weld metal was lower than that of the heat affected zone, because the weld metal was softened. And the mciro-hardness distribution, the tensile strength and the residual stess distribution of the weldment in the as-welded condition were compared with those of the weldment after heat treatment.
Forced vibration behavior of porous metal foam nanoplates on elastic medium is studied via a 4-variable plate theory. Different porosity distributions called uniform, symmetric and asymmetric are considered. Nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) containing two scale parameters is employed for size-dependent modeling of porous nanoplates. The present plate theory satisfies the shear deformation effect and it has lower field variables compared with first order plate theory. Hamilton's principle is employed to derive the governing equations. Obtained results from Galerkin's method are verified with those provided in the literature. The effects of nonlocal parameter, strain gradient, foundation parameters, dynamic loading, porosity distributions and porosity coefficient on dynamic deflection and resonance frequencies of metal foam nanoscale plates are examined.
