Porous frit-bonded alumina ceramics were fabricated using alumina and frit as raw materials. The effects of frit content and sintering temperature on microstructure, porosity, and flexural strength were investigated at low temperature of $750{\sim}850^{\circ}C$. Increased addition of frit content or higher sintering temperature resulted in improved flexural strength of porous frit-bonded alumina ceramics. It was possible to produce frit-bonded alumina ceramics with porosities ranging from 35% to 40%. A maximum strength of 52MPa was obtained at a porosity of ~38% when 90 wt% alumina and 10 wt% frit powders were used.
Porous mullite-bonded SiC (MBSC) ceramics were fabricated at temperatures ranging from 1400 to $1500^{\circ}C$ for 2 h using silicon carbide (SiC), alumina ($Al_2O_3$), strontium oxide (SrO), and poly (methyl methacrylate-coethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (PMMA) microbeads. The effect of template content on porosity, pore morphology, and flexural strength were investigated. The porosity increased with increasing the template content at the same sintering temperature. The flexural strength showed maximum after sintering at $1450^{\circ}C$/2 h for all specimens due to small pores and dense strut. By controlling the template content and sintering temperature, it was possible to produce porous MBSC ceramics with porosities ranging from 30% to 54%. A maximum flexural strength of ~51MPa was obtained at 30% porosity when no template were used and specimens sintered at $1450^{\circ}C$/2 h.
Porous self-bonded silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics were fabricated at temperatures ranging from 1750 to $1850^{\circ}C$ using SiC, silicon (Si), and carbon (C) powders as starting materials. The effect of the Si:C ratio on porosity and strength was investigated as a function of sintering temperature. It was possible to produce self-bonded SiC ceramics with porosities ranging from 36% to 43%. The porous ceramics showed a maximal porosity when the Si:C ratio was 2:1 regardless of the sintering temperature. In contrast, the maximum strength was obtained when the ratio was 5:1.
The wear behaviors of $Al_2O_3-40%TiO_2$ deposited on casting aluminum alloy(ASTM A356) by plasma spray against SiC ball have been investigated experimentally. Friction and wear tests are carried out at room temperature. The friction coefficient of $Al_2O_3-40%TiO_2$ coating is lower than that of pure $Al_2O_3$ coating(APS). It is found that low friction correspond to low wear and high friction to high wear in the experimental result. The thickness of $Al_2O_3-40%TiO_2$ coatings indicated the existence of the optimal coating thickness. It is found that a voids and porosities of coating surface result in the crack generated. As the tensile stresses in coating increased with the increased friction coefficient. The columnar grain of coating will be fractured to achieve the critical stress. It is found that the cohesive of splats and the porosity of surface play a role in wear characteristics. It is suggested that the mismatch of thermal expansion of substrate and coating play an important role in wear performance. Tensile and compressire under thermo-mechanical stress may be occurred by the mismatch between thermal expansion of substrate and coating. This crack propagation above interface is observed in SEM.
Three different welding wires were used to study the effects of Al content on weld metal toughness and porosity formation in self-shielded arc welding. Weld metal microstructure showed that while wire with 1.3% Al content contains coarse $\delta$-ferrite, wires with less than 0.5% Al content showed no such phase. In addition to the microstructural differences, cleanliness in weld metal was also different among wires. It showed that weld metal toughness was influenced by the $\delta$-ferrite formation, cleanliness and Ni addition. Even though wires with less than 0.5% Al content showed higher weld metal toughness, they showed relatively poor workability, forming porosities in weld bead in lower arc voltages.
Estimations of porosity and bulk density, particle size analysis of soli samples, tracer test and slug test were performed in a petroleum contaminated area of Kangwon for understanding characteristics of the aquifer. Porosities of the samples were estimated 0.158~0.257, and bulk densities were estimated as $1.73\sim2.10\;g/cm^3$. Majority proportion of the soil samples was 0.5~1.0 mm size. In the soil texture triangle, all samples were distributed at sand area. Uniformity coefficients were estimated as 7.71~10.39, and thus all samples were poorly-sorted. In the tracer test, Darcy velocity was estimated to $4.8\times10^{-6}$ cm/day, effective porosity was 0.175, and longitudinal dispersivity was 0.1 m. According to the slug test, hydraulic conductivities of the test wells were estimated as $2.243\times10^{-2}\sim1.634\times10^{-2}$ cm/sec. These hydrogeologic parameters can be used for efficient remediation design of the petroleum contaminated area.
A variety of inner baffles are often installed to reduce liquid sloshing and prevent tank damage. In particular, a porous baffle has a distinct advantage in reducing sloshing by changing the natural periods and dissipating the wave energy in a tank. In model tests, porous baffles with five different porosities were installed vertically in a liquid tank under sway motion. The free surface elevations and pressures were measured using an image processing technique and a pressure gage for various combinations of baffle's porosity and submergence depth, and tank's amplitude and period. The experimental results were in good agreement with the analytic solutions (Cho, 2015), with the exception of a quantitative difference at resonant periods. The experimental results showed that the sloshing characteristics in a tank were closely dependent on both the porosity and submergence depth of the baffle, and the optimal porosity existed near P = 0.1275.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the titanium castability (internal porosity) between pressure type casting machine & centrifugal casting machine with air-vent or not. Internal porosity is a well-known problem in dental titanium casting, resulting in inferior mechanical properties of dental restorations. To evaluate the castability, the square plate was chosen. 40 plate patterns($20{\times}20{\times}1.8mm$)were attached to funnel-shaped sprue. Then 20 plate patterns were attached air-vent. They were invested in titanium investment material and cast in a pressure type casting machine(20castings) and centrifugal casting machine(20castings). Each group were divided with air-vent(10castings) or not(10castings). The titanium castings were evaluated by radiographic photograph for the location of the internal porosities. The percentage porosity of each specimen was determined using standardized digital radiographs. The results were analyzed with analysis of variance and t-test for paired comparison between two groups.
The research was conducted windward of an irrigated Acacia amplicips Maslin windbreak established to protect As Salam Cement Plant from winds and moving sands. Two belts with approximate optical porosities of 50% and 20% were studied in River Nile State, Sudan. The research aimed at assessing the efficiency of the two belts in wind speed reduction and sand deposition. Research methods included: (i) estimation of optical porosity, (ii) measurements of windward wind speeds at a control and at distances of 0.5 h (h stands for windbreak height), 1 h and 2 h at two vertical levels of 0.25 h and 0.5 h, (iii) estimation of relative wind speeds at the three positions (distance and height) at windward and (iv) estimation of wind erosive forces and prediction of zones of sand deposition. Results show that while the two belts reduced windward wind speeds at the two levels for the three distances, belt II was more effective. Nearest sand deposition occurred at 2 h and 1h windward of belt II and belt I, respectively, at level 0.25 h. At level 0.5 h, sand was deposited only at 2 h windward of belt II and no sand deposition occurred windward of belt I. The study concludes that less porous windbreaks are more effective in reducing wind speed and in depositing sand in windward direction at a distance of not less than twice the belt height.
Ploycrystalline $Pb(Zr_{0.5},Ti_{0.5))O_3$ and $BaTiO_3$ powder were prepared by sol-gel process. The alumina substrate were sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ with bottom electrode of Pt for 2 hours. The Pb(Zr0.5,Ti0.5)O3 / BaTiO3 multilayered thick films with laminating times were fabricated on alumina substrate by screening printing method. The obtained thick films were sintered at $800^{\circ}C$ with upper electrode of Ag paste for 1 hour. Structural properties of Pb(Zr0.5,Ti0.5)O3 / BaTiO3 multilayered thick films were investigated. As a result of the Differential Thermal Analysis(DTA) of Pb(Zr0.5,Ti0.5)O3, exothermic peak was observed at around 650 $^{\circ}C$. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicated that BaTiO3 and Pb(Zr0.5,Ti0.5)O3 phases and porosities were formed in the interface of Pb(Zr0.5,Ti0.5)O3 / BaTiO3multilayered thick films.
