  • Porosity in polymer matrix composites increases rapidly during thermochemical decomposition at high temperatures. The generation of pores reduces elastic moduli and failure strengths of composite materials, and gas pressures in internal pores influence thermomechanical behaviors. In this paper, micromechanical finite element analysis is carried out by using two-dimensional representative volume elements for unidirectionally fiber-reinforced composites with porous matrix. According to the state of the pores, effective elastic moduli, poroelastic parameters and failure strengths of the overall composites are investigated in detail. In particular, it is confirmed that the failure strengths in the transvers and through-thickness directions are predicted much more weakly than the strength of nonpored matrix, and decrease consistently as the porosity of matrix increases.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between water vapor diffusion properties and the pore structure of paper. Gas-phase molecular diffusivity of water vapor through pores was determined based on the kinetic theory of gas. A mathematical model was derived to characterize the dimensional changes of the pore caused by the fiber-swelling mechanism. A modified-Fickean diffusion model was designed to simulate the water-vapor diffusion phenomena in porous paper web. Structural characterisocs of paper pores including the tortuosity and the shape factor was studied on a theoretical basis of Knudsen flow diffusion. Results are summarized as follows: 1. The theoretical water vapor diffusivity in gas-phase was 0.092$cm^2$ /min, 2. Porosity was inversely proportional to the degree of wet-swelling of paper, 3. Solid-phase water-diffusivity of fiber was 1.2 $ \times 10^{-5}cm^2/min$, 4. Modified diffusion model was fairly consistent to the experimental data (from part I), and 5. The Fickean pore tortuosity, ranging from 1,000 to 2,500, was in inverse proportion to the porosity of paper, and the Knudsen shape factor and length-angle factor for micro-pores in paper were 0.5~3.5 and about 340, respectively.

  • When manufacturing bulk graphite, pores develop within the bulk during the carbonization process due to the volatile components of the fillers and the binders. As a result, the physical properties of bulk graphite are inferior to the theoretical values. Impregnants are impregnated into the pores generated in the carbonization process through pressurization and/or depressurization. The physical properties of bulk graphite that has undergone impregnation and re-carbonization processes are outstanding. In the present study, a green body was manufactured by molding with natural graphite flakes and phenolic resin at 45 MPa. Bulk graphite was manufactured by carbonizing the green body at 700 and it was subsequently impregnated with impregnants having viscosity of 25.0 cP, 10.3 cP, and 5.1 cP, and the samples were re-carbonized at $700^{\circ}C$. The above process was repeated three times. The open porosity of bulk graphite after the final process was 22.25%, 19.86%, and 18.58% in the cases of using the impregnant with viscosity of 25.0 cP, 10.3 cP, and 5.1 cP, respectively.

  • The objective of this study was to examine changes in the porosity and internal structure of wood as it goes through the process of saccharification (extraction of fermentable sugars). This study also examined the use of different drying methods to prepare samples for characterization of internal pores, with particular emphasis on the partially disrupted cell wall. Aspen wood flour samples after dilute acid pretreatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis were examined for nitrogen adsorption. The resulting isotherms were analyzed for surface area, pore size distribution, and total pore volume. Results showed that freeze drying (with sample pre-freezing) maintains the cell wall structure, allowing for examination of saccharification effects. Acid pretreatment (hemicellulose removal) doubled the surface area and tripled the total volume of pores, which were mostly 10-20 nm wide. Subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis (cellulose removal) caused a 5-fold increase in the surface area and a ~ 11-fold increase in the total volume of pores, which ranged from 5 to 100 nm in width. These results indicate that nitrogen adsorption analysis is a feasible technique to examine the internal pore structure of lignocellulosic residues after saccharification. The information on the pore structure will be useful when considering value-adding options for utilizing the solid waste for biofuel production.

  • Recently, more interests in surface treatment of structure with water repellent agent are steadily increased, But, investigation of its properties such as protection, durability, morphology of micro structure is not sufficient. Therefore, This paper is aimed for the investigation of water repellent property and change of morphology of micro pores in mortar that is treated by water repellent agent(Inorganic polymer based material). Water repellent property, water absorption coefficient, air permeability, porosity and the observation of micro structure was investigated in different water repellent agent type. The test results indicated that water repellent treated mortar showed low absorption coefficient and air permeability(breathing effect). This is why inorganic polymer is coated at the wall of capillary and micro pores, also, the volume of micro pore is reduced without the change of morphology in micro structure.

  • The investigation was carried out to study the behaviors of the pore size and porosity, the mechanical strength, the resistance to thermal spallings and slag attacks according to particle sizes of starting raw materials in porous high Alumina ceramics. This porous ceramics have been used in processing of the clean steel by the blowing of the inert gas. The required properties in the practice are the suitable pores size, the sharp pores distribution for a uniform blowing of the gas, the strong corrosion resistance to slags and molten metals and the resistance to thermal spalling. The optimized properties in porous high alumina ceramics of the specimen No. 3 was found to be the very low slag intrusion and the superior resistance to thermal spalling because of the suitable pore size of 2.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, the porosity of 30% and the high sinterability.

  • Macroporous pellets were prepared from industrial waste flyash by foaming method. The surface and inside of flyash pellets, the shape was almost spherical and the average size was about 3 mm, were composed of the spherical pores interconnected through windows. The controlling of pellet size was conducted with solid loading. The flyash pellets with different relative density were characterized for porosity, average pore size, and specific surface area. As results, most physical properties had a tendency to increase as relative density decreased - extension ratio increased. The correlation between relative density and other properties was inspected through microstructural features evaluated by SEM. As a result, high porosity and high specific surface area were estimated to result from the superior connectivity between pores.

  • Paper is composed network of fibers. Since paper is plain, most cases paper is considered two-dimensional. But network of fibers creates a network of pores, and pores between fibers are most important part of the paper structure. So we have to make an approach to the paper by three-dimensionally. Pore structure in the Z-direction of the paper can affect directly not only basic properties od the paper such as density, porosity, opacity and strength but also coverage of the coating colors during coatong and printing properties. We studied effect of raw materials of the papermaking and physical treatment on the pore structure and properties of the paper.

  • Effects of pores on the microwave properties in microwave dielectric ceramics were studied by a computer simulation. Scattering matrix S$\_$21/ obtained from the network analyzer was compared to the S$\_$21/ obtained from the simulation. From electric field distribution, the dominant resonant TE$\_$01$\delta$/ mode could be easily determined. The effects of the porosity and pore size inside the dielectrics on the microwave properties were investigated by the HFSS simulation. When the total pore volume remains constantly, the quality factor decreased as the pore size Increases. As the total pore volume of the dielectrics increased. quality factor decreased.

  • Using the classical, first order and third order shear deformation plates theories the motion equations of an undrained porous FG circular plate which is located on visco-Pasternak elastic foundation have been derived and used for free vibration analysis thereof. Strains are related to displacements by Sanders relationship. Fluid has saturated the pores whose distribution varies through the thickness according to three physically probable given functions. The equations are discretized and numerically solved by the generalized differential quadrature method. The effect of porosity, pores distribution, fluid compressibility, viscoelastic foundation and aspect ratio of the plate on its vibration has been considered.
