This study has investigated the feasibility of caissons for accelerating consolidation (C.A.C.) constructed in clays with anisotropic permeability by improving the former study on C.A.C. in isotropic clays. Analytical solutions for excessive pore water pressures of two-dimensional consolidation equation and average degrees of consolidation with varying time factors have been provided by considering anisotropic permeability. With varying anisotropic permeability ratios of 5, 10, and 50, consolidation times required for reaching the average degree of consolidation of 90% for C.A.C. at the section of $\xi$=0.1 are shorter than those for conventional caissons by 8, 13, and 47 times, respectively. C.A.C. is more effective in reducing consolidation time as anisotropic permeability ratio increases. This study provides also plots for average degrees of consolidation versus the width to depth ratios of analyzed sections and permeability ratios, which will enable engineers to determine easily average consolidation settlements.

$La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_{3-\delta}$ (LSCF) powders with different particle sizes, synthesized through a citrate complexation method and a gel-casting technique, are used to fabricate porous LSCF cathodes with graded microstructures via tape casting. To create porous electrodes with desired porosity and pore structures, graphite and starch are used as pore former for different layers of the graded cathode. Examination of the microstructures of the as-prepared LSCF cathode using an SEM revealed that both grain size and porosity changed gradually from the catalytically active layer (near the electrodeelectrolyte interface) to the current collection layer (near the electrode-interconnect interface). Impedance analysis showed that a 3-layer LSCF cathode with graded microstructures exhibited much-improved performance compared to that of a single-layer LSCF cathode, corresponding to interfacial resistance of 0.053, 0.11, and 0.27 $\Omega{\cdot}cm^2$ at 800, 750, and $700^{\circ}C$ respectively.

Porous YSZ ceramics are fabricated using 3 mol% yittria-stabilized zirconia (3YSZ) and NiO with different particlesizes (0.6 and 7 ${\mu}m$). Nickel oxide (NiO) is added to the YSZ powder as a pore former with different amounts(40, 50, and 60 vol%) and at different sintering temperatures (1350 and $1400^{\circ}C$) are applied in order to evaluate the temperature effects on the pore and mechanical properties. Heat treatment is conducted after sintering at $700^{\circ}C$ in $H_2$ for the NiO reduction process; then, Ni is removed using a $HNO_3$ etchant solution. According to the NiO contentand sintering temperatures, 41-67% porous YSZ ceramic is obtained and the flexural strength increases, while the porosity decreases with an increasing sintering temperature. The optimum flexural strength ($136.5{\pm}13.4MPa$) and porosity (47%) for oxygen transport porous YSZ membrane can be obtained with 40 vol% of 7 ${\mu}m$ NiO particle at a sintering temperature of $1350^{\circ}C$.

Occurrence of black opaque hydrocarbon (pyrobitumen) in some Cretaceous Jinju sandstones of the Sindong Group, Gyeongsang Basin in Korea is first reported in this study. The pyrobitumen is developed on chlorite pore-lining cement, or impregnated into the outer zone of chlorite cement. Therefore, it seems to have been formed after the precipitation of chlorite cement, indicating the former presence of crude oil. The liquid hydrocarbons migrated into sandstones during moderate burial and these sandstones seem to have acted as a liquid hydrocarbon reservoir. The presence of pyrobitumen in the Jinju Formation indicates that this formation underwent deep burial after liquid hydrocarbon migration. As reservoir temperatures increased further, hydrocarbons were cracked and a solid pyrobitumen residue remained in the reservoir.
Several chitosan beads were prepared by W/O emulsion and capillary extrusion methods. The surface structures were observed through SEM pictures, the surface areas were determined by BET method, the available amine contents were measured by picric acid titration method, and the results were correlated each other. The beads from W/O emulsion method were smaller in size but had higher hardness, surface area, and available amine contents than the ones from capillary extrusion method. Moreover, the surface area, available amine contents, apparent density and the hardness showed large differences according to the drying processes. As compared between the solvent dehydration and the freeze drying technique in W/O emulsion method, the former showed higher surface area, higher available amine contents and hardness than the latter. SEM pictures revealed that in case of solvent dehydration method, very small pores existed, whereas in case of freeze drying method, cell-like pores existed on the surface. The results of picric acid titration showed that the beads dried by solvent dehydration method were 10 times higher in amine contents than those from freeze drying method, and the amount of amine contents were increased as the surface area was increased. After fluorescamine was reacted with chitosan beads, the fluorescence labeled beads were observed through fluorescence microscope. The results showed that most of primary amine existed on the surface of beads and pores.
For the separation of boron isotopes, aminated polystyrenedivinylbenzene ion-exchange resins were prepared by chloromethylation of styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer (DVB 10%), followed by the reaction of methylamine. During the preparation of styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer, heptane for the porous resin and toluene for the non-porous resin were used as diluent, and the pore volume of the resins was determined by mercury porosimeter. In both water and aqueous alcohol solutions, the distribution coefficient of boric acid was decreased in accordance with increasing the alcohol concentration and the number of carbon atoms in the alcohol molecules. As a result of separatioin of boron isotope with nonporous and porous resin in water solvent, the separation efficiency of porous resin is better than that of the nonporous, and the result in both water and 50% methyl alcohol solvent relevant to nonporous resin indicated that the latter was better than the former.
Plasma polymerization of allylamine subsequently after plasma pre-treatment was conducted on the activated carbon fibers (ACFs) for the immobilization of amine groups in the surface of ACFs. The change of structural properties of ACFs with respect to different polymerization conditions was investigated through BET method. The change of surface morphologies of ACFs with respect to different plasma polymerization power was also studied through AFM. It was found that the structural properties such as specific surface area and micropore volume could be optimized under certain plasma deposition conditions. It was reckoned that treatment and deposition showed adverse effect on plasma polymerization, in which the former developed the micro-structures of the ACFs and the latter tended to block the micro pores. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed that the poly(allylamine) was successfully immobilized on the surface of ACFs and the amount of the deposited polymer layer was related to the plasma polymerization power. SEM results showed that the plasma deposited polymer layer were small and homogenously distributed. The size and the distribution of particles deposited were closely related to the plasma polymerization power, too.
In the present study, the removal of Pb (II) ions on oxidized activated carbons (ACs) was investigated. ACs were derived from activation of indigenous cotton stalks waste with potassium hydroxide (KOH) in two-stage process. The KOH-ACs were subjected to liquid-phase oxidation with hot $HNO_3$ and one untreated sample was included for comparison. The obtained carbons were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), slurry pH and $N_2$-adsorption at 77 K, respectively. Adsorption capacity of Pb (II) ions on the resultant carbons was determined by batch equilibrium experiments. The experimental results indicated that the oxidation with nitric acid was associated with a significant increase in mass of yield as well as a remarkable reduction in internal porosity as compared to the untreated carbon. The AC-800N revealed higher adsorption capacity than that of AC-800, although the former sample exhibited low surface area and micropore volume. It was observed that the adsorption capacity enhancement attributed to pore widening, the generation of oxygen functional groups and potassium containing compounds leading to cation-exchange on the carbon surface. These results show that the oxidized carbons represented prospective adsorbents for enhancing the removal of heavy metals from wastewater.

The objective of this study is to develop the sorbent of oyster shell, which can remove gaseous acid pollutants emitted from the incinerator and power plants. The physicochemical properties of prepared absorbents have been measured using ICP and BET Also, this study is to investigate the Hydration/calcination reaction in the fixed bed reactor. Thus, the results could be summarized as follows. Oyster shell can be used in powder type without former processing. It should be also noted that sulfation reactivity of oyster sample increases to about 5 times by calcination/hydration reaction due to the increase of specific surface area and pore volume. From these experiments, we have found that both $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ in simulated flue gas can be effectively removed by use of oyster absorbent.
In this work, activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were plated with copper metal using electroless plating method and the effects of surface properties and pore structures on chromium adsorption properties were investigated. Surface properties of ACFs have been characterized using pH and acid/base values. BET data with $N_2$ adsorption were used to obtain the structural parameters of ACFs. The electroless copper plating did significantly lead to a decrease in the surface acidity or to an increase in the surface basicity of ACFs. However, all of the samples possessed a well-developed micropore. The adsorption capacity of Cr(III) for the electroless Cu-plated ACFs was higher than that of the as-received, whereas the adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) for the former was lower than that of the latter. The adsorption rate constants ($K_1$, $K_2$, and $K_3$) were also evaluated from chromium adsorption isotherms. It was found that $K_1$ constant for Cr(III) adsorption depended largely on surface basicity. The increase of Cr(III) adsorption and the decrease of Cr(VI) adsorption were attributed to the formation of metal oxides on ACFs, resulting in increasing the surface basicity.
