  • In this paper, a series of centrifuge tests were performed to evaluate the seepage characteristic of reinforced embankment. The centrifuge models simulated an actual embankment reinforced by enlargement of levee cross-section. The centrifuge models have the same conditions except the locations of enlargement with low permeable material : water-side and land-side. In addition, the prototype embankment is constructed on low permeable clay layer. In the case of water-side reinforcement, the reinforced zone makes water head down and the saturated zone of embankment propagates slowly. In the case of land-side reinforcement embankment, the saturated zone enlarged relatively faster but the amount of exit water at land-side toe was very small because of the land-side reinforcement zone. The low permeable clay foundation layer was being continuously saturated by the inflow from the embankment as well as the uplift flow from the permeable layer induced by the excess pore water pressure.

  • Lightweight geopolymers were fabricated with non-milled IGCC slag and Si sludge as a bloating material. The relationship between addition amount of Si sludge and physical/chemical properties of lightweight geopolymers was investigated. When the geopolymers were made by mixing IGCC slag, alkali activator, and more than 10 wt.% Si sludge, the temperature of the geopolymer pastes reached higher than 130℃ in a few minutes. This exothermic reaction accelerated the geopolymer reaction; however, it was difficult to make geopolymer specimens because of a rapid bloating reaction. Both compressive strength and density of the specimens tend to decrease with an addition of Si sludge; however, there was little difference in both compressive strength and density with addition of Si sludge more than 10 wt.%. Because there was a limit to get low density geopolymers by simply increasing the addition of Si sludge, the control of pore size and distribution of geopolymer is more important by controlling flow rate of the paste through the control of W/S ratio. Therefore, it is important to control process conditions, appropriate W/S ratio for the bloating than the control of Si sludge. The optimum W/S ratio was 0.20 for the addition of Si sludge less than 30 wt.% and W/S ratio should be more than 0.28 for the addition of Si sludge more than 30 wt.%, although there was no practical application in fact.

  • The calcium hydroxide$(Ca(OH)_2)$ which is the cement hydrate flowed into the tunnel by groundwater is reacted with microorganism in the soil, carbon dioxide$(CO_2)$ and the vehicle's exhaust gas$(SO_3)$. So its by-products are precipitated at the drainage pipe and these cause the drainage clogging. By this phenomenon, Degradation of water flow at the drainage system of the tunnel occurred and also pore water pressure is increased. Hence the acceleration of seepage and degradation of lining is occurred. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the field applicability of the Quantum Stick and Magnetic treatment in prevention of scale deposits at the Namsan ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ tunnel and the Zone ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ of subway. These technologies were installed into drainpipes with their performance monitored through occasional site visits. SEM and XRD were also performed on scale collected from these drainpipes. As a result, in case which factor technology is applied, scale creation is remarkably decreased and especially Quantum Stick treatment performing better than Magnetic treatment. Therefore, additional application of Quantum Stick or Magnetic treatment to the existing drainage is expected to decrease the drainage clogging of the drainage.

  • Small-pore Cu-chabazite SCR catalysts with high NOx conversion at low temperatures are of interest for marine diesel engines with exhaust temperatures in the range of 150 to $300^{\circ}C$. Unfortunately, fuels for marine diesel engines can contain a high level of sulfur of up to 1.5% by volume, which corresponds to a $SO_2$ level of 500 ppm in the exhaust gases for an engine operating with an A/F ratio of 50:1. This high level of $SO_2$ in the exhaust may have detrimental effects on the NOx performance of the Cu-chabazite SCR catalysts. In the present study, a bench-flow reactor is used to investigate the effects of sulfur poisoning on the NOx performance of Cu-chabazite SCR catalysts. The SCR catalysts were exposed to simulated diesel exhaust gas stream consisted of 500 ppm $SO_2$, 5% $CO_2$, 14% $O_2$, 5% $H_2O$ with $N_2$ as the balance gas at 150, 200, 250 and $300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours at a GHSV of 30,000 $h^{-1}$. After sulfur poisoning the low-temperature NOx performance of the SCR catalyst is evaluated over a temperature range of 150-$300^{\circ}C$ to determine the extent of the catalyst deactivation. Desulfation is also carried out at 600 and $700^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes to determine whether it is possible to recover the NOx performance of the sulfur-poisoned SCR Catalysts.

  • A study on the elution characteristics of biostimulating agents (sulfate and nitrate) from biostimulants which are used for in-situ bioremediation for the coastal sediment contaminated with organic matter was performed. The biostimulating agents were mixed with the coastal sediment, and then massed the mixture into ball. Two kinds of ball type biostimulant were prepared by coating the ball surface with two different polymers, cellulose acetate and polysulfone. A granular type biostimulant (GTB) was also prepared by impregnating a granular activated carbon in the biostimulating agent solution. The image of scanning electron microscopy for the biostimulant coated with cellulose acetate (CAB) showed that the inner side of the coating layer consisted of irregular and bigger size of pores, and the surface layer had tight structure like beehive. For the biostimulant coated with polyfulfone (PSB), the whole coating layer had a fine structure without pore. The elution rate of the biostimulating agents for the CAB was higher than that for the PSB, and the elution rate for the GTB was considerably higher than that for the PSB in distilled water as well as in sea water. The elution rate of the biostimulating agents in turbulent water flow was about 3 times higher than that in standing water, and the elution rate of nitrate was higher than that of sulfate from the stimulating agents.

  • This study was conducted to identify an optimal ratio of carbon to nitrogen (C/N ratio) for denitrification of nitrate using molasses as an external carbon source. A series of batch and column tests was conducted using an indigenous bacterium Pseudomonas sp. KY1 isolated from a nitrate-contaminated soil. For the initial nitrate-nitrogen concentration of 100 mg-N/L, batch test results indicated that C/N ratio of 3/1 was the optimal ratio with a relatively high pseudo-first-order reaction constant of $0.0263hr^{-1}$. At C/N ratio of 3/1, more than 80% of nitrate-nitrogen concentration of 100 mg-N/L was removed in 100 hrs. Results of column tests with a flow velocity of 0.3 mL/min also indicated that the C/N ratio of 3/1 was optimal for denitrification with minimizing remaining molasses concentrations. After 172 hrs of column operation (35 pore volumes) with an influent nitrate-nitrogen concentration of 100 mg-N/L, the effluent met the drinking water standard (i.e., 10 mg $NO_3$-N/L).

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the optical conditions to satisfied the salt concentration of 1% below of compost produced by using the material of foodwaste and sawdust. We changed the mixing ratios of foodwaste : sawdust from 7:3 to 3:7 and the ratios of foodwaste : rice hull from 6.5:3.5 to 4:6. We analyzed C/N, pH, temperature, water content, volatile solid, salt, heavy metals to check the degree of composting. The running conditions of composting were $80{\sim}133{\ell}/min{\cdot}m^{3}$ of air flow rate, 1:4 of time interval(on:off) and 7days of turning interval. Running times were 28days. The optical mixing ratio of foodwaste : sawdust was 6:4 when we compared many factors. Especially when the mixing ratios of foodwaste : sawdust or foodwaste : sawdust were 7:3 or 6:4, the composting was not accomplished by the reason of low C/N. The concentrations of heavy metal were sufficiently low to satisfied the satandard of organic compost. The salt concentration was 0.43%-0.46% that was the half of initial concentration. The rice hull was the good in pore rate and 통기성, and so it can used alternative material.

  • To investigate the salt accumulation in the plastic film house soils, bulk density, electrical conductivity(EC), exchangeable canons and water soluble anions were determined at different depths(0~60cm) in the salt-accumulated plastic film house soils in Yesan, Chungnam, Korea. Bulk density were increased from $1.2Mg/m^3$ to $1.5Mg/m^3$ as the depth changed from 0cm(top soil) to 30cm(subsoil) below the soil surface, whereas the bulk densities between 30cm to 60cm slightly decreased to $1.42Mg/m^3$. These changes of soil bulk densities might influence the porosity and pore size distribution, resulting in affecting the water flow throughout, soil layers. Electrical conductivity and Exchangeable sodium percentage(ESP) for 0 to 10cm soil layer were 5.08 dS/m and 6.4, respectively, while the EC was decreased to less than 1.63 dS/m in 20~30cm depth and about 0.7 dS/m. Salt accumulation patterns in the plastic film house soils might be influenced by the changes of the bulk densities in soil.

  • Soil structure and organic matter have been known to strongly affect water flow and solute transport, yet little information is available concerning soil hydraulic properties related to soil physical and chemical properties in the forest site. The purpose of this study was to quantify the spatial variability and spatial correlation of the measured parameter values from the plots established with the rainfall simulator on Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis) dominated site in Kwangju. Kyunggi-Do. Measurement of soil water flux and retention were made with the inherent soil texture, soil structure, and organic matter. The method was based on the observation that when water was applied at a constant rate to the soil surface on each plot. The method was simple to apply and consists of following steps: (i) Wet the soil from a rainfall simulator with several known discharge rates on a relatively leveled soil surface with and without organic matter. (ii) Once the borders of the ponded zone were steady, saturated hydraulic conductivity( $K_{s}$) and the matric flux function(F) was evaluated from a regression of flux vs. the reciprocal of the ponded area. A conductivity of the form $K_{i+}$$_1$ $_{c}$= $K_{i}$( $_{c}$) [1-d /dz] where flux continuity implies. For this, continuity of matric potential at the interface at all times are as follows: $_1$( $Z_{c}$) = $_2$( $Z_{c}$) = $_{c}$ for steady state intake from water ponded on the soil surface. Results of this investigation showed the importance of understanding spatial variability in wide differences of water retention and saturated hydraulic conductivity with respect to pore geometry and organic matter contents which influenced the water flux throughout the soil profile.l profile.ile.

  • Recently, spillways are need to control stable water level for supporting main dams because of floods by unusual change of weather such as Typhoon Rusa. This study has been focused on the amount of leakage through the rock mass distributed fractures and joints under the opened emergency spillway. It is very important to evaluate the amount of leakage as these affect stability of spillway by interaction between effective stress and pore pressure. The commercial program MAFIC has been used for analyzing groundwater flow in fractured rock mass. The results showed that the values of range, average and deviation of leakage were 2.85∼ 3.79×10-1, 3.32×10-1 and 1.70×10-2 m3/day/m2 respectively. Secondary, we have estimated the effect of grouting after the transmissivity(Tf) of joint 1 as main pathway of leakage known from above results was changed from 1.78×10-7 to 1.59×10-9 m2/s. The results showed that the values of range, average and deviation of leakage were 7.80×10-4∼1.53×10-3, 1.18×10-3 and 1.32×10-4 m3/day/m2 respectively. As the result, the amount of leakage after grouting has been decreased by a ratio of 1 to 277.
