  • The characteristics of spray-dried granules are important for dry pressing operation since they have great influences on die-filling, compaction ratio, and resulting green microstructure. An attempt was made to control granule morphology and the packing structure of fine Si3N4 particles in granules by adjusting suspension property. Mercury porosimetry was used to characterize the pore structures of both granules and green compacts. Finally, the effects of particle packing structure in granules and green microstructure on sintering behavior were investigated.

  • For effective $CO_2$ separation using pore size controlled membrane, silica was deposited in the mesopores of a $\gamma$-alumina film by chemical vapor deposition of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and phenyl-substituted ethoxysilanes at 773-873K. The membranes prepared with phenyl-substituted ethoxysilanes were calcined to remove the phenyl group and control the pore size. The gas permaselectivity of prepared membranes was evaluated by using $H_2$, $CO_2$ $N_2$, $CH_2$ and $C_3H_8$ single component and a mixture of $CO_2$ and $N_2$. The membranes produced using TEOS contained micropores having permselectivity only to hydrogen, but the phenyl-subsitituted ethoxysilane derived membranes possessed micorpores which are recognizable molecules of $CO_2$, $N_2$ and $CH_4$. In the diphenyl-diethoxysilane-derived membrane, the $CO_2$ permeance and selectivity of $CO_2$/$CH_4$ were $10^{-6} m^3(STP) \cdot m^{-2} \cdot s^{-1} \cdot kPa^{-1}$ and 11, respectively. Therefore, the use of phenyl-substituted ethoxysilane was effective in controlling micropore size for $CO_2$ separation.

  • Metal thin films are used widely to solve the vibration problem. However, damping mechanism is still not clear, which limits the further improvement of the damping properties for film and the development of multi-functional damping coating. In this paper, Damping microscopic mechanism of porous metal films was investigated at both macroscopically and microscopically mixed levels. Molecular dynamics simulation method was used to model and simulate the loading-unloading numerical experiment on the micro-pore and vacancy model to get the stress-strain curve and the microstructure diagram of different defects. And damping factor was calculated by the stress-strain curve. The results show that dislocations and new vacancies appear in the micro-pores when metal film is stretched. The energetic consumption from the motion of dislocation is the main reason for the damping properties of materials. Micro-mechanism of damping properties is discussed with the results of in-situ experiment.

  • In this study, the pore-filled ion-exchange membranes were prepared by using the asymmetric PVDF membrane as a nascent membrane. First, the solution of PVBCI having the chlorornethylate aryl ring of 80 percents and DABCO was made with the mixed solvent of THF and DU (8:2). These mixed solution was then, filled in the pores of PVDF membrane, and left for a day to complete the gelation. Finally the pore-filled anion-exchange membrane is obtained fallowed by the amination of the remaining chloromethyl groups with trimethylamine (TMA, 40 wt% in water) forming the positive ammonium ion sites. This 2 step procedure enabled us to produce the pore-filled membranes without change of size, and to control the properties of final membrane with various degree of cross-linking. The results of SEM and AFM showed the polyelectrolyte existed in the pores of nascent membrane as a certain configuration. From the investigation of the solvent affecting much to the permeability and rejection, it was found that the membranes using mixed solvent of THE and DMF (8:2) showed better performances than the membranes produced by THF only. The result of an investigation for the water permeability of the final membrane at low pressure (100 Kpa) showed a typical ultrafiltration membrane's permeability (8 ∼ 10 kg/$m^2$hr) and good values of rejection (55∼60 percent).

  • To control the pore size of silcia gel, formamide (FA), N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF), polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) were added in the sol-gel process from starting solution with tetramethyl orthosilicate (TMOS). The gels were characterized using porosimeter, TG-DTA and SEM. As a result, the more contents of FA and PAA was increased the more gelation time was decreased, also the more contents of DMF and PEG was increased the more gelling time was increased. The mean pore size of gels was larger in the order of PAA, DMF, FA and PEG. And the mean pore size of porous silica glass was 59.0$\AA$, 31.5$\AA$, 29.9$\AA$ and 29.0$\AA$, respectively, heated at 75$0^{\circ}C$/100$0^{\circ}C$.

  • An image processing algorithm has been developed in order to analyze the nanofiber web images obtained from a high magnification microscope. It has been known that precise pore detection on thick webs is extremely difficult mainly due to lack of light uniformity, difficulty of fine focusing and translucency of nanofiber web. The pore detection algorithm developed has been found to show excellent performance in characterizing the porous structure, thus being a promising tool for on-line quality control system under mass production. Since the images obtained from an optical microscope represent only web surface, a scale factor has been introduced to estimate the web structure as a whole. Resulting web structures have been compared to those by mercury porosimetry, especially in pore size distribution. It has been shown that those two structures have a strong correlation, indicating that scaling of a single layer web structure can be an effective way of estimating the structure of thick fiber webs.

  • Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) nanotemplates for nano electronic device applications have been attracting increasing interest because of ease of fabrication, low cost process, and possible fabrication in large area. The size and density of the nanostructured materials can be controlled by changing the pore diameter and the pole density of AAO nanotemplate. In this paper, AAO nanotemplate was fabricated by second anodization method. In addition, effects of electrolyte and anodization voltate on the microstructure of porous alumina films were investigated. Vertically well aligned pores had the average pore sizes of 15-70 nm and the length of approximately 40 ${\mu}m$.

  • The porous silica glass prepared by the sol-gel method from the mixed solution of Si(OCH3)4, H2O, HCl and CH3OH with HCONH2 as a DCCA (Drying Control Chemical Additives). For investigation the characteristics of gels and glasses, we examined gels and glasses using TG-DTA, XRD, IR, SEM and porosimeter. The more content of formamide in the mixed solution increased, the more pore size and porosity of gel increased. In the excess formamide added gel, the properties of pore of gel were not so changed. The porous silica glass was prepared from the dry gel after heat treatment at 75$0^{\circ}C$. Porosity and mean pore size of the porous silica glass was 17~25% and 40~60$\AA$ relatively.

  • Two processing routes (i.e., the gel casting and polymer preform routes) using polymer beads were studied to fabricate porous ceramics with a cellular structure. The gel casting route, comprising the gel casting of a ceramic slurry mixed with polymer beads, was found to be inadequate to produce porous ceramic bodies with a interconnected pore structure, due to complete coating of the slurry on the polymer beads, which left just isolated pores in the final sintered bodies. The polymer preform route, involving the infiltration of a polymer beads preform with the ceramic slurry, successfully produced porous ceramics with a highly interconnected network of spherical pores. The pore size of 250-300 $\mu\textrm{m}$ was demonstrated and the porosity ranged from 82 to 86%. This process is advantageous to control the pore size because it is determined by the sizes of polymer beads used. Another feature is the avoidance of hollow skeleton, giving a high strength.
