In this study, the Korean pine wood (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc) and Italian poplar wood (Populus euramericana Guinier) was treated with a mixture of monoammonium phosphate (MAP) and boric acid. Their usability as fire retardant and as decay-resistant construction and interior materials were evaluated by testing of chemicals, corrosion rate and absorption rate, weight loss and chemical contents. An experiment was performed to compare treated pine wood and Italian poplar wood. According to the results, Italian poplar wood had higher specific gravity and retention of chemicals than pine wood, and treated wood showed higher decay-resistance than untreated one. Weight loss was less in treated wood than untreated one because the degree of decay was lower in the former than the latter. Corrosion rate and absorption rate met the KS standard for wood preservative performance. The chemical contents analysis was carried out to determine the degree of decay and it was found that the preservative effect of chemical treatment was lower in Italian poplar wood than in pine wood.

1. Various gluing qualities applying Resorcinol Plyophen #6000 were studied on aiming the strength relationships of laminated woods resulted by single species [poplar (Populus deltoides), larch(Larix leptolepis)], mixed species of (poplar and larch), preservatives, treated poplar the scarf joint with mixed species of poplar and larch and the scarf joint treated with preservatives. 1. 1 On the block shear and on the DVL tension test, the mean wood failure ratio showed an excellent value i.e., above 65% and the tangential strength for larch was higher than that of radial, but it was reversed for poplar as shown in Tables 1 and 2. 1. 2 The lamina treated with Na-PCP reduced slightly the strength but the limited strength allowed for manufacturing laminated wood was not influenced by treating Na-PCP as shown in Tables 3 and 4. 1. 3 The safe scarf ratio in the plane scarf joint was above 1/12 for larch and 1/6 for poplar regard less of the chemical treatment or untreatment as shown in Tables. 5, 6, 7 and 8. 2. In the normal and boiled state, the gluing quality of the laminated wood composed of single[poplar (Populus deltoides), larch (Larix leptolepis)] and double species (poplar and larch) glued with Resorcinol Plyophen #6000 were measured as follow, and also represented the delamination of the same laminated wood. 2.1 The normal block shear strength of the straight and curved laminated wood (in life size) were more than three times of the standards adhesion strength. And, the value of the boiled stock was decreased to one half of the standard shear adhesion strength, but it was more than twice the standard strength for the boiled stock. Thus, it was recognized that the water resistance of the Resorcinol Plyophen #6000 was very high as shown in Tables 9 and 10. 2. 2 The delamination ratio of the straight and curved laminated woods in respect of their composition were decraesed, in turn, in the following order i. e., larch, mixed stock (larch+poplar) and poplar. The maximum value represented by the larch was 3.5% but it was below the limited value as shown in Table 11. 3. The various strengthes i.e., compressive, bending and adhesion obtainted by the straight laminaced wood which were constructed by five plies of single and double species of lamina i. e., larch (Larix leptolepis) and poplar (Populus euramericana), glued with urea resin were shown as follows: 3. 1 If desired a higher strength of architectural laminated wood composed of poplar (P) and larch (L), the combination of the laminas should be arranged as follows, L+P+L+P+L as shown in Table 12. 3.2 The strength of laminated wood composed of laminas which included pith and knots was conside rably decreased than that of clear lamina as shown Table 13. 3.3 The shear strength of the FPL block of the straight laminated wood constructed by the same species which were glued with urea adhesives was more than twice the limited adhesion strength, thus it makes possible to use it for interior constructional stock.

In this study, three tree species (Populus euramericana, Kalopanax pictus and Quercus serrata) exhibiting different levels of shade tolerance were employed to investigate photosynthetic responses to the lower light condition on forest floors. Chlorophyll contents, spectral properties and photosynthetic characteristics were examined by using the tree species grown under high light intensity (PPFD $920{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$) or low light intensity (PPFD $80{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$). Plants grown under the low light intensity tended to have reduced leaf area, chlorophyll content per unit leaf area, light absorption and respiration in the shade intolerant tree species of P. euramericana. However, the shade tolerant species K. pictus and Q. serrata showed increased leaf area, chlorophyll content and net apparent quantum yield. Therefore, light absorption and light utilization efficiency were improved under the low light intensity. Also shade tolerant species maintained activities of photosystems and $CO_2$ fixation systems with little changes in low light intensity condition.
This study is to diagnose the drought tolerance of twenty broad-leaved tree species by the pressure-volume(P-V) curves. As for the diagnosis of drought tolerance, the valuable water relations parameters obtained from P-V curves are the osmotic potential at full turgor, ${\Psi}_0{^{sat}}$, osmotic potential at incipient plasmolysis, ${\Psi}_0{^{tlp}}$, maximum bulk modulus of elasticity, $E_{max}$, and relative water content at incipient plasmolysis, $RWC^{tlp}$. Also, the figures related to the diagnosis of drought tolerance are the free water content (FWC) versus leaf water potential(${\Psi}_L$), volume-averaged turgor pressure ($P_{vat}$) versus leaf water potential (${\Psi}_L$), and H$\ddot{o}$fler diagram. In this study, the relatively high drought tolerant species are Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Quercus acutissima, Quercus serrata, Quercus aliena, and Populus alba${\times}$glandulosa ; the relatively low drought tolerant species are Fraxinus mandshurica, Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Populus euramericana, Kalopanax pictum, Carpinus loxiflora, Carpinus cordata, Prunus sargentii, Prunus leveilleana, and Cornus controversa ; medium species are Quercus mongolica, Acer mono, Acer triflorum, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum, Ulmus davidiana, and Zelkova serrata.
Two comparative poplar clones (I-214: Populus euramerinm, Peace: P koreana x p. trihocarpa) were exposed to two $CO_2$ concentrations (350 or 2, 000 ${\mu}L L^{-1} CO_2$) for 21 days. When both poplar clones were compared at growth conditions, the net photosynthetic rate ($P_N$) in $CO_2$-enriched ($2, 000{\mu}L L^{-1} CO_2 = C_{2, 000}$) plants become about 50-60% higher than that of 350 ${\mu}L L^{-1} CO_2 (=C_{350}$ Plants on 7 days treatment. But the enhancement of PN by high $CO_2$ was not maintained throughout all the experimental period. At 21 days, there was no difference of photosynthetic rates between $C_{350}$ and $C_{2000}$ plants. In contrast with photosynthesis, the response of leaf conductance to the elevated $CO_2$ concentration was very different between I-214 and Peace. During all experimental period, leaf conductance ($g_{s}$) of $C_{2000}$ plants is 50% lower than that of the $C_{350}$ plants for I-214, while there is no difference of gs between the plants of $C_{350}$ and $C_{2, 000}$ for Peace. The results of gs in Peace indicate that decreased photosynthetic rate after 21 days in $C_{2, 000}$ Plants for two poplar clones is possibly due to non-stomatal factors. To investigate the non-stomatal factors, starch accumulation and ribulose-1, 6-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCase) were measured. We found significant accumulation of starch in two poplar clones exposed to high $CO_2$, especially starch of I-214 in $C_{2, 000}$ become 3.5 times higher than in $C_{350}$ plants at 21 days. This suggests that high proportion of photosynthates was directed into starch. After 21 days, the activity of ribulose-1, 6-bisphosphate carboxylase of $C_{2, 000}$ plants become decreased in 40-50% compared with that of the $C_{350}$ plants. Two poplar clones show the same trend to RuBPCase declines under high $CO_2$ concentration, although the decline is more significant for I-214. The results reported here suggest that starch accumulation and decreased RuBPCase activity in $C_{2, 000}$ plants can be partly ascribed to the loss of photosynthetic efficiency of high $CO_2$-grown poplar plants.

We isolated the phenolic glucoside salicortin from a Populus euramericana bark extract, and examined its ability to suppress inflammatory responses as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying these abilities, using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Salicortin inhibited iNOS expression and the subsequent production of NO in a dose-dependent manner in the LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Salicortin significantly suppressed LPS-induced signal cascades of NF-${\kappa}B$ activation, such as IKK activation, $I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ phosphorylation and p65 phosphorylation in RAW 264.7 cells. In addition, salicortin inhibited the LPS-induced activation of JNK, but not ERK or p38 MAPK. Furthermore, salicortin significantly inhibited production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-$1{\beta}$ and IL-6 in the LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. These findings suggest that salicortin may show its anti-inflammatory activity by suppressing the LPS-induced expression of pro-inflammatory mediators through inhibition of NF-${\kappa}B$ and JNK MAPK signaling cascades in macrophages.
This paper reports on the changes of equilibrium moisture contents and specific surface areas of Poplar wood(Populus euramericana) for various steam explosion treatments. Equilibrium moisture contents(EMC) and specific surfaces of steam exploded woods were measured under the moisture adsorption course at 25$^{\circ}C$, and compared with those of other materials and wood meals. The EMCs of steam exploded wood meal were 1~5% less in comparison with that of wood meal. In the case of delignified steam exploded wood meal and delignified wood meal, the same tendency was appeared too. But absolute values of EMCs for delignified wood meals were larger than those of the wood meal. For the changes of EMC by the steam exploded conditions, the EMC decreased with the increase of the steam explosion pressure. On the other hand, specific surface areas were calculated from BET plots based on amounts of monomolecular vapor adsorption of various wood meals. Specific surface areas of the wood meal and delignified wood meal were 90~145, 34~90($m^2/g$) respectively, and which were greater in comparison with those of steam exploded wood meals and delignified steam exploded wood meals. From these results, it is considered that the amount of water vapor adsorption was decreased by the increase of the crystallinity, effect of heat treatment, and coating by melted lignin in during the steam explosion.
Two species(Quercus mongolica, populus euramericana) of hardwood chips were subjected to steam explosion 25 kg/$cm^2$, for 6 min. The exploded woods were treated by the single or multi-stage chemical process with sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite and sodium chlorite. The multi-stage treatment of exploded wood can be successfully removed lignin. Enzymatic hydrolysis rate of substrate varied from 25% for exploded wood to about 80% for the multi-chemical treated exploded wood. The enzymatic susceptibility was different among wood species. The multi chemical treatment of the exploded wood resulted in the high rate of glucose in the enzymatic hydrolyzate. Cellulase adsorption increased at high lignin content of substrates, while crystallinity, pore area and specific surface area of substrates did not affected enzyme adsorption. According to the proposed pretreatment and saccharification process in this study, it can be acquired about 37~40 kg of glucose from 100 kg of hardwood.
In this study, the three species (Populus euramericana, Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis) were cut to difference (0, 0.15, 0.3, 0.45 mm) between the size of tip and that of root of the finger (DSTR) and jointed with poly vinyl acetate (PVA) and resorcinol-phenol resin (RPR). We described the relationship between the bending strength properties of finger DSTR and the acoustic emission (AE) generated during the bending test. The results were as follows: The AE generation time of finger-jointed specimens with RPR adhesive was earlier than that with PVA adhesive. The AE cumulative event count of finger-jointed specimens with RPR adhesive continuously increased with increasing load and the event count was much more than that with PVA adhesive. Also, the AE cumulative event count for resorcinol-phenol resin adhesive obtained from low load level was abundant. The AE wave in finger-jointed specimens with RPR adhesive could be detected in the below proportional limit load. Therefore, AE signals from bending test are useful for the estimation of strength in finger DSTR specimens.
To evaluate the effects of chemical pretreatments of lignocellulosic biomass on enzymatic hydrolysis process, Populus euramericana was pretreated for 1 hr with 1% sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$) at $150^{\circ}C$ and 1% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at $160^{\circ}C$, respectively. Before the enzymatic hydrolysis, each pretreated sample was subjected to drying process and thus finally divided into four subgroups; dried or non-dried acid pretreated samples and dried or non-dried alkali pretreated samples and chemical and physical properties of them were analyzed. Biomass degradation by acid pretreatment was determined to 6% higher compared to alkali pretreatment. By the action of acid ca. 24.5% of biomass was dissolved into solution, while alkali degraded ca. 18.6% of biomass. However, reverse results were observed in delignification rates, in which alkali pretreatment released 2% more lignin fragment from biomass to the solution than acid pretreatment. Unexpectedly, samples after both pretreatments were determined to somewhat higher crystallinity than untreated samples. This result may be explained by selective disrupture of amorphous region in cellulose during pretreatments, thus the cellulose crystallinity seems to be accumulated in the pretreated samples. SEM images revealed that pretreated samples showed relative rough and partly cracked surfaces due to the decomposition of components, but the image of acid pretreated samples which were dried was similar to that of the control. In pore size distribution, dried acid pretreated samples were similar to the control, while that in alkali pretreated samples was gradually increased as pore diameter increased. The pore volume which increased by acid pretreatment rapidly decreased by drying process. Alkali pretreatment was much more effective on enzymatic digestibility than acid pretreatment. The sample after alkali pretreatment was enzymatically hydrolyzed up to 45.8%, while only 26.9% of acid pretreated sample was digested at the same condition. The high digestibility of the sample was also influenced to the yields of monomeric sugars during enzymatic hydrolysis. In addition, drying process of pretreated samples affected detrimentally not only to digestibility but also to the yields of monomeric sugars.
