Change of Blooming Pattern and Population Dynamics of Phytoplankton in Masan Bay, Korea (마산만 식물플랑크톤의 대발생 양상의 변화와 군집 동태)

  • To clarify the bloom pattern and species succession in phytoplankton community, the population dynamics with the determination of physico-chemical factors have been studies in Masan Bay, the south sea of Korea, for the periods November 2003-October 2004. Concentration of $NH_4-N$ was always higher than that of $NO_3-N$, which was similar level as compared to other costal areas. $PO_4-P$ concentration was lower than those in other coastal areas but similar to oligotrophic environments. Thus, phosphate seems the limiting nutrient rather than nitrogen. $SiO_2-Si$ concentration was also low as compared to other costal areas. Si:P ratio was low from autumn to winter, suggesting silicate and/or phosphate limitation during this period. The cell density of phytoplankton was high in winter 2003 and early autumn 2004. The carbon biomass was high in winter 2003 and summer 2004. And chlorophyll-a concentration was high in late autumn 2003 and summer 2004. Among 78 species of phytoplankton found in the bay during the investigated period, dominant species were two diatoms of Cylindrotheca closterium, Skeletonema costatum, and three dinoflagellates of Heterocapsa triquetra, Prorocentrum minimum, P. triestinum, and one raphidophyte of Heterosigma akashiwo. P. minimum dominated from late autumn to winter, but it was replaced by H. triquetra in late winter. P. triestinum dominated from late spring to early summer. Simultaneously, H. akashiwo cell density steadily increased, and it became dominant with C. closterium in late summer. With decreasing of H. akashiwo and C. closterium, S. costatum became the most dominant species in autumn. The canonical analyses showed that total phytoplankton cell density related to diatom cell density and it was affected by temperature, and concentrations of $NO_3-N\;and\;PO_4-P$. The carbon bio-mass and $chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ concentration related to diatom- and dinoflagellate cell densities and these were affected by flagellate cell density, salinity, and concentrations of $SiO_2-Si\;and\;PO_4-P$. Last six years monitoring data in Masan city obtained from Korean Meteorological Agency indicates gradual increase in air temperature. And the precipitation decreased especially in spring season. The winter bloom found in 2003 may be caused by the increase in the temperature and this bloom subsequently induced the nutrients depletion, which continued until next spring probably due to no precipitation. Therefore, the spring bloom, which had been usually observed in the bay, might disappear in 2004.

Population Dynamics of Eriosoma lanigerum (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and Aphelinus mali (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) in Apple Orchards and Screening Effective Insecticides in the Laboratory (사과원에서 사과면충과 사과면충좀벌의 발생동태 및 살충제 실내검정)

  • Woolly apple aphid, Eriosoma lanigerum, overwintered as adult or nymph stage on rootstocks, and crown- and root sucker in the soil. In an un sprayed apple orchard, the number of E. lanigerum colony started to increase from mid-April, showed the 1st peak between late June and early July, thereafter decreased followed by the 2nd peak in late July, and then again peaked in late September as the size in the 1st peak. In this orchard, the number of E. lanigerum colonies per tree did not exceed 3.5 colonies during the peak occurrence period, and was maintained around 2 colonies throughout seasons. In all seasons, parasitism of Aphelinus mali on E. lanigerum was much lower on root colonies than on aerial colonies that located on shoots and tree trunks above the ground. The parasitism of E. lanigerum was high in most orchards examined, showing parasitism of > 70% in maximum in most cases. In the laboratory bioassay for the mortality effects of several insecticides on E. lanigerum, fenitrothion, dichlorphos, machine oil, methidathion, thiacloprid, and imidacloprid showed 97.8, 96.8, 95.4, 91.5, 26.7, and 7.8% morality, respectively. Also, the adult emergence rates from A. mali mummies were 51.2, 72.6, 14.2, 3.5, 72.2, and 85.4% in the treatment of the above insecticides, respectively. Insecticides belong to neonicotinoid, which are newly developed to control aphids, showed low mortality against E. lanigerum. Fenitrothion and dichlorphos were effective on E. lanigerum control and had a low toxic to A. mali. Consequently, the insecticides should be useful in integrated pest management system for E. lanigerum in apple orchards.

  • Diprion hani Smith and Cho was first reported as a new species from South Korea in 2007. Major outbreaks occurred in September 2007. Outbreaks were restricted geographically to only three inland areas of central Korea where had previously been reforested with Korean white pine, Pinus koraiensis Seib. & Zucc. The outbreak areas were approximately 50 km in diameter. The sawfly populations decreased drastically in 2008. Environmental factors of the outbreak sites were investigated as a first step to characterize the sites and to understand the population dynamics of the sawfly. During the outbreak in 2007, the average temperature of the sites were $1.3^{\circ}C$ higher than the 30 years average, and the annual precipitation was 384 mm higher than the average from 1971 to 2000. In addition, Monodontomerus dentipes (Dalman), a well-known torymid parasitoid of many sawflies, is reported as a gregarious cocoon parasitoid of D. hani.

Dynamics of Soil Microflora and Soil Enzymes around the Fairy-rings of Tricholoma matsutake (송이 균환(菌環) 주변(周邊)의 토양미생물(土壤微生物)과 토양효소(土壤酵素)의 동태(動態))

  • We investigated the impacts of the fairy-ring of Tricholoma matsutake on the dynamics of soil microflora and soil enzyme activities by grouping the soils around the fairy-ring of T. matsutake into four regions. The regions were grouped as 'zone of decayed mycorrhizae', 'zone of mycorrhizae for fruiting', 'zone of physiologically active mycorrhizae' and 'zone free from mycorrhizal infection'. Soil fungi and actinomycetes were quite little at the soils around the fairy-ring of T. matsutake compared to those of general forest soils, and there were significant differences among the four regions. The soils with the mycelial cluster of T. matsutake showed about one third of microbial population compared to those in the zone free from mycorrhizal infection, which indicated that T. matsutake took a dominant position within the fairy-ring of the fungus. We could manifest that T. matsutake showed a distinctive characteristics of mycorrhizal fungus since the activities of dehydrogenase were significantly different between the zone of physiologically active mycorrhizae and the zone free from mycorrhizal infection. The dehydrogenase activity was the highest at the early season of fruiting around the fairy-ring of T. matsutake, while the acid-phosphatase activity increased from March to June followed by a slight decrease on August and peaked on October. This phenomenon made us infer that the vitality of T. matsutake be sustained after fruiting.

Soil Mineral Nutrients and Microbes Are Responsible for Large Patch Disease Caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2 in Zoysiagrass Turf (골프장 한국잔디의 Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2에 의한 Large Patch 발생 토양에서 근권 미생물과 무기영양 평가)

  • Mineral nutrients and population dynamics of soil microbes in the root zones of zoysiagrass infected by Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2 and that of healthy plants were sampled from ten golf courses using a cup cutter(diameter $10\;cm\;{\times}\;8\;cm$ deep). Analysis of variance(ANOVA) showed significant differences in content of $NO_3$-N(P = 0.05), $NH_4$-N(P = 0.1), and K(P = 0.1) between infected and healthy samples. The content of $NO_3$-N in the soils of large patch was 9.49 mg/kg and that in soil of healthγ plants was 7.02 mg/kg. However, the content of $NH_4$-N in the soil of large patch was 12.02 mg/kg whereas 14.40 mg/kg for the soil under the healthy plants. The content of K in the soil of large patch was lower than that of soil of healthy plants. There was few numbers of Pseudomonas colonies In the soils of large patch compared to that of healthy plants. These results indicated that the content of $NO_3$-N, NH4-N, and K and the microbial population dynamics in root zones correlated to occurrence of large patch.

MD Simulation Study for Preferred Structure of Glycerol Backbone in 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) Molecule According to Solvent Properties (용매 특성에 따른 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) 분자에서 글리세롤 골격 구조에 대한 MD 시뮬레이션 연구)

  • In this study, the molecular dynamics simulation of 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) single molecule was conducted by changing the solvent properties in order to investigate the change in the glycerol backbone structure in phospholipids according to the solvent properties. DOPC has three different conformations according to glycerol C1-C2 bond: A(θ3 = trans, θ4 = gauche), B(θ3 = gauche, θ4 = gauche-), C(θ3 = gauche-, θ4 = trans). Changes in the glycerol backbone structure of the DOPC were examined using the solvent's dielectric constant and surface tension constant as variables. As a result, the population of the B structure increased as the dielectric constant increased. The reason is that the solvation energy of the B structure is larger than that of A. In addition, as the surface tension constant increased, the population of the B structure increased because the surface area of B was smaller than that of A. The results of these studies are expected to be used in the study of phospholipid structure in the future.

Analysis of the Effect of Temperature on the Pesticide Efficacy and Simulation of the Change in the Amount of Pesticide Use (온도가 농약효과에 미치는 영향분석 및 농약사용량 예측 모의실험)

  • Pest population density models are very important to monitor the initial occurrence and to understand the continuous fluctuation pattern of pest in pest management. This is one of the major issues in agriculture because these predictions make pesticides more effective and environmental impact of pesticides less. In this study, we combined and predicted the mortality change of pest caused by pesticides with temperature change and population dynamic model. Sensitive strain of two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) with kidney bean leaf as host was exposed to mixed acaricide, Acrinathrin-Spiromesifen and organotin acaricide, Azocyclotin, at 20, 25, 30, and $35^{\circ}C$, respectively. There was significant difference in mortality of T. urticae among pesticides and temperatures. We used DYMEX to simulate population density of T. urticae and predicted that the initial management time and number of chemical control would be changed in the future with climate change. There would be implications for strategies for pest management and selection process of pesticide in the future corresponding climate change.

Length-weight Relationship and Condition Factor of Zacco platypus in the Lake Hoengseong (횡성호에 분포하는 피라미 (Pale chub: Zacco platypus) 개체군의 Length-weight Relationship 및 Condition Factor)

  • The dynamics of Zacco platypus population of upstream and downstream in the lake Hoengseong, Korea were investigated from April to October 2005. Length-weight relationship, condition factor (K) and relative condition factor $(K_n)$ of Z. platypus were compared by the study stations. The equations based on length-weight relationship in the lake Hoengseong were $Log(T_w)=-2.2s+3.18{\cdot}Log(T_L)\;(r^2=0.99)$. The result in comparison of variations of Z. platypus populations, in lake was more remain to better than in upstream and downstream them. Also the b value, assessed by Length-weight relationship in lake was 3.36, in upstream and downstream were 3.09, 3.15, respectively indicating the fish in lake better than stream. The slopes of population condition controlled by K factor also showed positive relationship. It was higher in lake environment than in stream sample, reflecting that population of Z. platypus distributed in lake Hoengseong was favorable and stable condition. The lake environment seems to be providing more favorable condition for Z. platypus population.

Deciphering Diversity Indices for a Better Understanding of Microbial Communities

  • The past decades have been a golden era during which great tasks were accomplished in the field of microbiology, including food microbiology. In the past, culture-dependent methods have been the primary choice to investigate bacterial diversity. However, using culturein-dependent high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes has greatly facilitated studies exploring the microbial compositions and dynamics associated with health and diseases. These culture-independent DNA-based studies generate large-scale data sets that describe the microbial composition of a certain niche. Consequently, understanding microbial diversity becomes of greater importance when investigating the composition, function, and dynamics of the microbiota associated with health and diseases. Even though there is no general agreement on which diversity index is the best to use, diversity indices have been used to compare the diversity among samples and between treatments with controls. Tools such as the Shannon-Weaver index and Simpson index can be used to describe population diversity in samples. The purpose of this review is to explain the principles of diversity indices, such as Shannon-Weaver and Simpson, to aid general microbiologists in better understanding bacterial communities. In this review, important questions concerning microbial diversity are addressed. Information from this review should facilitate evidence-based strategies to explore microbial communities.

동태적 고객만족 모형의 전략적 활용 - 통신서비스를 중심으로 -

  • 최근의 통신서비스 시장은 경쟁의 도입과 기술의 발전이라는 두 축에 힘입어 양질의 서비스를 보다 저렴한 요금으로 소비자들에게 제공하고자 노력하여 왔다. 그러나 이러한 통신서비스의 질적 향상 노력에도 불구하고 여전히 통신서비스의 품질은 소비자들의 기대수준에는 미치지 못하고 있다는 지적이 있다 더욱이 문제가 되는 것은 소비자가 인지하고 있는 통신 서비스 품질의 기대수준은 시간의 흐름에 따라 동태적으로 변화하는 것이어서 한 시점에서의 통신 서비스 품질 수준의 측정으로는 정책적으로 큰 의미를 설명하기 어려운 실정이다. 이와 관련하여 많은 선행 연구들이 다양한 측면에서 시행되어져 왔지만 이제까지의 많은 선행 연구들은 대부분이 통신서비스의 특성을 제대로 고려하지 않고, 고객만족의 향상과 불일치를 가져오고 있는 성능품질만을 측정한다거나, 시간의 흐름에 따라 변화해 가는 소비자가 서비스에 대해 인지하고 있는 중요도나 기대수준을 고려하지 않고 있으며, 각 구성요소간의 동태적 인과고리에 대한 고려 없이 연구가 이루어져 전반적인 통신 서비스의 고객만족을 전체적인 시각에서 평가한 연구는 극히 드물다. 따라서 본 연구는 통신서비스의 고객만족을 피드백 관점, 동태적 관점, 사실적 관점의 시스템 다이내믹스 방법론을 적용하여 전반적인 동태적 고객만족 모형을 구현하고 이를 정책적으로 활용할 수 있는가에 대한 접근을 시도하였다. 고객만족은 결코 한순간에 머물러 있는 것이 아니며 체감품질 및 기대수준의 영향을 받아 지속적으로 변화해간다 따라서 어떻게 기대수준을 관리하고 고객의 기대에 부응하는 체감품질을 관리하는 것이 지속적인 고객만족을 획득할 수 있는 가를 시뮬레이션 모형을 통해 가시적으로 시스템의 행태를 구현함으로써 그 이해의 폭을 넓히고자 시도하였다.으로써 웹에서의 혁신적이며 크로스 사이트, 크로스 장르적인 컨텐츠 플래닝의 가능성을 시사하는데 의의가 있다고 하겠다.y used to some of interactive storytelling through hyper text in CD-ROM and web sites.
