Experimental results from nucleate pool boiling heat transfer with various finned tubes in CFC11, HCF123 and HCFC141b are reported. One plain tube and four low fin tubes of various fin densities were tested in an attempt to find out the optimum fin density in the heat flux range of 10-60 kW/m$^{[-992]}$ at near atmospheric pressure. The results indicated that CFC11 showed the highest heat transfer coefficients. Its alternatives, HCFC123 and HCFC141b, showed 3-5% lower heat transfer coefficients than those of CFC11 at the same heat flux. As the fin density increases, so does the heat transfer surface area. Measured heat transfer coefficients, however, do not necessarily always increase as the fin density increases. This unique phenomenon seems to be caused by the coalescence of the bubblers that prevent the cool liquid from entering into the fin valleys. For all the refrigerants tested, the optimum fin density yielding the highest performance was 28 fins per inch confirming the previous results by other researchers.

Falling-film evaporation experiments for aqueous solution of lithium bromide (LiBr) were performed on a horizontal smooth 19.05-mm-dia copper tube. Average heat transfer coefficients were obtained with varied film Reynolds numbers, system pressures, LiBr concentrations and degrees of wall superheat. Heat transfer coefficients increase with increasing system pressure and decreasing concentration. For degrees of wall superheat, the heat transfer coefficient did not't show the distinct trend. For this experimental ranges, heat transfer coefficients showed maximum values at an optimal film Reynolds number. The results of this work were compared with pool boiling data reported previously, and it was shown that the heat transfer performance is superior to the pool boiling.

To improve pool boiling heat transfer in an vertical annulus with closed bottoms, the length of an outer tube has been changed from 0.2m to 0.6m. For the test, a heated tube of 19.1mm diameter and water at atmospheric pressure have been used. Annular conditions are made using glass tubes fabricated around the heated tube. The gap size of the annulus is 3.65mm. To elucidate effects of the outer tube length on heat transfer results of the annulus are compared with the data of a single unrestricted tube and the annulus with wider gap size of 6.35mm. Throughout the tests much higher heat transfer coefficients are observed for the annulus of 3.65mm gap size comparing to the other two cases. The change in the outer tube length results in much variation in heat transfer coefficients. Moreover, with shortening the length of outer tube the possibility of the CHF occurrence can be removed.

A series of data sets for the heat transfer coefficient versus wall superheat has been obtained experimentally using various combinations of tube diameters ($9.7{\sim}25.5mm$), surface roughness ($15.1{\sim}60.9nm$), and tube orientations (horizontal and vertical) to obtain effects of tube diameters on nucleate pool boiling heat transfer for the saturated water at atmospheric pressure. In addition, the results are compared with the well known Cornwell and Houston's correlation for horizontal tubes to identify the deviation of the present experimental data from the correlation and the applicability of it to vertical tubes. The experimental results show that the heat transfer coefficient decreases as the tube diameter increases for both horizontal and vertical tubes and they are in good agreement with the Cornwell and Houston's correlation within ${\pm}20%$ scatter range.
In an effort to determine the combined effects of major parameters of heat exchanger tubes on the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer in the scaled in-containment refueling water storage tank (IRWST), a total of 1,966 data for q'quot; versus ${\Delta}T$ has been obtained using various combinations of tube diameters, surface roughness, and tube orientations. The experimental results show that (1) increased surface roughness enhances heat transfer for both horizontal and vertical tubes, (2) the two heat transfer mechanisms, i.e.,enhanced heat transfer for both horizontal and vertical tubes, (2) the two heat transfer mechanisms, i.e., enhanced heat transfer due to liquid agitation by bubbles generated and reduced heat transfer by the formation of large vapor slugs and bubble coalescence are different in two regions of low heat fluxes (q'quot; $\leq$50kW/$m^2)$ and high heat fluxes (q'quot; $\geq$50kW/$m^2)$ depending on the orientation of tubes and the degree of surface roughness, and (3) the heat transfer rate decreases as the tube diameter is increased for both horizontal and vertical tubes, but the effect of tube diameter on the nucleate pool boiling heat transfer for vertical tubes is greater than that for horizontal tubes. Two empirical heat transfer correlations for q'quot;, one for horizontal tubes and the other for vertical tubes, are obtained in terms of surface roughness $({\varepsilon})$ and tube diameter (D). In addition, a simple empirical correlation for nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficient $(h_b)$ is obtained as a function of heat flux (q'quot;) only.ucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficient $(h_b)$ is obtained as a function of heat flux (q'quot;) only.

Pool boiling performance of a metal-formed enhanced tube for a flooded refrigerant evaporator was experimentally investigated. Tests were performed for three different refrigerants(R-11, R-123, R-l34a), at two different saturation temperatures $4.4^{\circ}C \;and \;26.7^{\circ}C$ .Heat flux was varied from 10㎾/$m^2\;to\ 50㎾/$m^2$. Compared with the heat transfer coefficients of the smooth tube, the heat transfer coefficients of the enhanced tube were 6.6 times higher for R-11, 6.0 tines higher for R-123 and 3.5 times higher for R-l34a. The enhancements are comparable with those of foreign products. The heat transfer coefficients of R-l34a were higher than those of R-11 and R-123, either for the enhanced tube or for the smooth tube. At $4.4^{\circ}Csaturation temperature, however, the heat transfer coefficients of R-l34a were approximately the same as those of R-11, The effect of the saturation pressure on the boiling performance was similar to that of the smooth tube - the heat transfer coefficient increases as the saturation pressure increases.

The nucleate boiling heat transfer experiments are performed using a ternary refrigerant R407C which is a candidate of alternatives of HCFC 22. The boiling phenomena of R-32, R-125 and R-134a which are the constituent refrigerants of R407C are also investigated. The nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficients of R407C are less than those of HCFC 22 which have the similar physical and transport properties. In our experimental pressure range, which is similar to the operational pressure of air conditioning system, the deterioration of boiling heat transfer coefficients of mixture refrigerant R407C does not appear for moderate wall superheat region. Since nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficients cannot be obtained from ideal mixing law of mixture, Thome's method was used to predict. To account for the heat flux effect and system pressure in Thome's method, the correcting factor, a(P.L1T), was introduced and obtained from experiments for ternary refrigerant R407C.

Pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of HCFC123, HFC134a, HCFC22, HFC407C, HFC410A and HFC32 wre measured on a horizontal smooth tube, 26 fpi low fin tube, Turbo-B and Thermoexcel-E enhanced tubes. AN experimental apparatus was designed such that all tubes heated by cartridge heaters could be installed at the same time to save the refrigerant. Data were taken in the pool of $7^{\circ}C$ with the heat flux decreasing from 80 kW/$m^2\;to\;5kW/m^2$. Test results showed that HTCs of pure refrigerants and those of a azeotrope were greatly influenced by reduced pressure. HTCs of HFC407C were 21~25% lower than those of HCFC22 due to mass transfer resistance. For all refrigerants, enhanced tubes with sub-surface and sub-tunnels showed the largest heat transfer enhancement. Especially the largest heat enhancement was obtained for HCFC123 whose reduced pressure is the lowest among al the refrigerants tested. This indicates that either Turbo-B or Thermoexcel-E enhanced tube would be the best choice when used with a low vapor pressure refrigerant.

An experimental study was carried out to identify the various regimes of natural convective pool boiling and to determine the boiling heat transfer curve and Critical Heat Flux(CHF) on a vertical square surface having a 70mm width and a 70mm height. The heater made of copper block with embedded cartridge heaters is submerged in a water tank at atmospheric pressure. As the heat flux increases from 100kW/㎡ to 1.2MW/㎡, the heat transfer regime migrates from the nucleate boiling to the film boiling. The boiling heat transfer data are fitted by Rohsenow type correlation. An explosive vapor generation on the heated surface, whose size and frequency are characterized by the heat flux, is visualized using a high speed digital imaging system.

The effect of oil on flow boiling of R-123 in a plain tube bundles was experimentally investigated for a range of quality and heat flux. It is shown that the heat transfer coefficient decreased as the oil concentration increased. Comparison with the previous pool boiling data reveals that the reduction of heat transfer coefficient by oil is more pronounced in pool boiling, and the difference increased with the increase of oil concentration and heat flux. Within the experimental range, the variation of mass flux or quality has negligible effect on the heat transfer coefficient.
