  • Polyurethane-ureas(PUUs) were prepared from 4,4'-methylenebis(cyclohexyl isocyanate) and various diols including isosorbide. Isosorbide is starch-derived monomer that exhibit a wide range of glass transition temperature and are therefore able to be used in many applications. PUU was synthesized by a pre-polymer polymerization using a catalyst. Successful synthesis of the PUU was characterized by fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy. Thermal properties were determined by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical analysis. It was found that by tuning isosorbide content in the resin, their glass transition temperature(Tg) slightly decreased. Physical properties were also determined by tensile strength and X-ray diffraction. There is no significant differences between petroleum-derived diol and isosorbide in XRD analysis. Moreover, their physical and optical properties were determined. The result showed that the poly(tetramethylene ether glycol)/isosorbide-based PUU exhibited enhanced tensile strength, transmittance, transparency and biodegradability compared to the existing diols. After 11 weeks composting, the biodegradability of blends increased in ISB-PUU. The morphology of the fractured surface of blend films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy.

  • Carbonate-type polyurethane resins containing anionic moieties were systhesized from NCO-terminated prepolymer method. Membranes were manufactured from the polymer solution and the separation of aqueous ethanol solution was investigated. To enhance the property of urethane resin, carbonate-type polyol(PTMCG) was used. ${\alpha}^{\prime},{\alpha}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$-dimethylolpropionic acid was used as a chain extender to increase the hydrophilicily of the urethane membrane. The ionization of the pendent carboxylic groups in urethane resin was carried out using trimthylamine. To confirm the formation of anionic groups in urethane resin, IR spectra of model compounds were compared with those of urethane resins. It was confirmed that the concentration of hard segment and hydrogen bond contributed to the property of the concentration of hard segment and hydrogen bond contributed to the property of urethane resin in which the mole ratio of chain extender and polyol was from 3:1 to urethane resin in which the mole ratio of chain extender and polyol was from 3:1 to 5:1. The carbonate-type polyurethane containing pendent carboxylic grop(PU) had Tg of around-$25^{\circ}C$ and Tm, $45^{\circ}C$ measured by DSC. Transition temperatures of one containing pendent anionic group(APU) prepared from the ionization of PU shifted to $8{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ lower temperature region than those of PU. Pervaporation membrane was prepared through the casting method. N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) were used as a solvent and hexamethylene diisocyanate(HMDl) as a crosslinking agent. Swelling degree increased with ethanol concentration in mixure and the control of the swelling degree of the membrane could be achieved by crossliking. The results of pervaporation were as follows : separation factor, 2.3~9.8 ; flux, $27{\sim}79.5g/m^2hr$. Pervaporation separation capacity could be enhanced by reducing the molecular weight of polyol from 2,000 to 1,000.

  • Foam type porous silicon carbide ceramics were fabricated by a polymer replica method using polyurethane foam, carbon black, phenol resin, and silicon powder as raw materials. The influence of the C/Si mole ratio of the ceramic slurry and heat treatment temperature on the porous silicon carbide microstructure was investigated. To characterize the microstructure of porous silicon carbide ceramics, BET, bulk density, X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analyses were employed. The results revealed that the surface area of the porous silicon carbide ceramics decreases with increased heat treatment temperature and carbon content at the $2^{nd}$ heat treatment stage. The addition of carbon to the ceramic slurry, which was composed of phenol resin and silicon powder, enhanced the direct carbonization reaction of silicon. This is ascribed to a consequent decrease of the wetting angles of carbon to silicon with increasing heat treatment temperature.

  • Epoxy resin toughening agents such as core/shell nanoparticles, CTBN epoxy, polyester polyols, and polyurethane have been widely used in order to compensate for the brittleness and improve the impact resistance of the epoxy resin. In this work, a few tougheners mentioned above were individually added into adhesive compositions to observe the effects of physical and mechanical properties. Both flexural strength and flexural modulus were measured with UTM while impact strength was analyzed with Izod impact tester. The obtained results showed that the addition of toughening agents afforded positive performance in terms of flexibility and impact resistance of the cured epoxy resin. Furthermore, DMA experiments suggested that the trends of storage modulus data of each epoxy resin composition coincided with the trends of flexural modulus data. FE-SEM images showed that toughening agents formed circled-shape particles when it was cured in epoxy resin composition at high temperature by phase separation. The existence of particles in the cured samples explains why epoxy resin with toughener has higher impact resistance.

  • 2 Components polyurethane coatings are widely used for the industrial coating in general because of its excellent film performance and the workability which were brought by the 3 dimensional cross linked chain structures being formed after the reaction between polyol and polyisocyanate. 2 components polyurethane can be classified into alkyd polyol, polyester polyol, acrylic polyol and polyester modified acrylic polyol depending on where it is used. This research was conducted under the conditions below; different chemical compositions of resin for paint, set the same conditions of viscosity, thinner and acid value, set alternative polyols, OH values and catalysts, set alternative polyisocyanate hardeners of the paint, measure the reaction rates and dynamic mechanical characteristics using RPT-3000, Rotation Rheometer, DMA and FTIR. The research found that the reactivity between polyol and isocyanate influences the film performance and workability depending on the catalysts, OH values and chemical compositions. We find out that different reaction rate of acrylic polyol and polyester modified acrylic polyol with poly-isocyanate is not influenced on temperature and catalyst. In addition, reaction speed of high hydroxyl content polyol is faster than low hydroxyl equivalent. These results can improve difficult working condition to apply urethane coating.

  • In this study, an outstanding anion exchange chemical filter was prepared for acidic gas removal. Commercial anion exchange resin was attached to polyurethane (PU) foam by using different types of pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA). The water and chemical resistance and also adhesive elongation were investigated. Also, the behavior of HCl and HF adsorption was evaluated as functions of the initial concentration and flow rate. ATE-701, AT-4000C and HCA-1000 showed 900, 1,500% and 2,400% of the elongation, respectively. It was confirmed that the desorption ratio of HCA-1000 was less than 6% and had excellent durability in water and chemical resistance tests. The adsorption occurred faster as the concentration and flow rate of HCl and HF increased. But 100% adsorption equilibrium occurred after 110 minutes, regardless of the concentration and flow rate. In addition, SEM morphology showed that the adhesive was uniformly dispersed, while the porous structure of the ion exchange resin was maintained, and the chemical filter exhibited excellent durability for the adsorption/desorption process.

  • This study was undertaken to evaluate the degree of the marginal leakage of composite restoration with 3 brands of dental adhesives by means of the dye penetration at the enamel and dentinal margins. 150 cavities of class V were prepared on the buccal and lingual surfaces of 75 extracted anterior and premolar teeth, which were devided into 3 groups. The cavities were filled with composite resin, Silar$^{(R)}$ (3M) and Heliosit$^{(R)}$ (Vivadent) after application of the dental adhesives, specifically Scotchbond$^{(R)}$ (3M) which is essentially composed with halophosphorus ester of Bis-GMA, Dentin Adhesit$^{(R)}$ (Vivadent) which is polyurethane resin, and Enamel Bond$^{(R)}$ (3M) which is a product of Bis-GMA with low viscosity at internal surfaces and margins of the cavities. All specimens were immersed in $37^{\circ}C$, 0.5% methylene blue solution for 24 hours after thermocycling at $4^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$, embedded in acrylic resin, and sectioned with diamond disk into two parts. The sectioned specimens observed with the light microscope. The following results were obtained: 1. The group filled with Scotchbond$^{(R)}$-Silar$^{(R)}$ the other two groups at the enamel margins. 2. No significant difference in the degree of the marginal leakage had appeared between Dentin Adhesit$^{(R)}$-Heliosit$^{(R)}$ group an d Enamel Bond$^{(R)}$-Silar$^{(R)}$ group at the enamel margins. 3. Severe marginal leakage with penetration of dye to the floor of cavity had appeared from the all three groups and no significant difference in the degree of marginal leakage existed between the three groups at the dentinal margins.

  • This study was conducted to manufacture the soluble micro-fiber and to synthesize low melting polymer for the interior fabric not to use the polyurethane resin causing some problems. Low melting polyester for weft yarn was introduced by adding 30-40 mol% ratio of isophthalic acid to a main chain of polyethylene terephthalate to decrease the melting temperature up to heat setting temperature. Micro-fiber for warp yarn consisted of both soluble and insoluble components with multi-layered structure. When the soluble micro-fiber was treated by alkaline hydrolysis with 3-5% concentration of NaOH, it showed the turning point at 28% weight loss since soluble polyester was hydrolyzed approximate five times faster than regular polyester.

  • Conventional solvent-based polyurethane (PU) is well established for wide applications, such as textile treatments, surface coating, adhesive and so on. Due to the demands of safety, economic, and environmental protection, the solvent-based PU is restricted and has been phasing out and aqueous-based PU is becoming the world market trend, which is an environmental friendly product. The chemical resistance, physical and mechanical properties of aqueous-based PU are still not competible with solvent-based PU. Because of aqueous-based PU is a linear thermoplastic polymer with lower average molecular weight. Their improvements are normally performed by a post-curing reaction or a polymer hybridization to enhance the polymer cross-linking density. Hybridization of PU with aqueous-based epoxy resin or acrylate emulsion and then cured by a curing agent for improving the performance properties and reducing the cost of aqueous-based PU.Furthermore, a special function is added to aqueous-based PU increasing the application value, for examples, flame retardation, polymeric dyes, hydrophilic and etc.
