  • Esophageal leiomyoma is a very rare disease. We present a patient who underwent enucleation of esophageal leiomyoma through a left thoracotomy. The patient was suffered from substernal pain and chest discomfort for 4 months. The esophagogram revealed irregular ovoid smooth filling defect in just proximal portion of G-E junction with the normal mucosal folds. Chest CT demonstrated well-defined, polypoid tumor mass on the anterolateral wall of the distal esophagus. Esophagoscopy revealed normal intact mucosal patterns with swollen hard protruded tumor mass lesion from the just proximal portion of G-E junction. In June, 1993, patient underwent enucleation of esophageal leiomyoma through the left thoracotomy. A horseshoe and spiral shaped, whitish firm tumor mass was noted on the distal esophagus, and the tumor mass was enucleated by blunt dissection carefully. The esophageal leiomyoma was confirmed with histopathological examination. The postoperative course was smooth and uneventful.

  • The current study describes a case of endometrial polyps accompanied by an open-cervix pyometra in a 15-year-old female Chinchilla Persian cat. The cat was presented with a history of a large mass in the endometrium and purulent discharge from the vulva. Ovariohysterectomy was performed and pedunculated polypoid mass on the endometrium was seen protruded into the uterine cavity. Histologically, the mass was composed of multiple cystically dilated glands surrounded by fibrous stroma. Based on gross and histologic findings, the diagnosis for this case was concluded.

  • This is a report of a case in which a left atrial myxoma was successfully removed by total cardiopulmonary bypass with total hemodilution and moderate hypothermia. The patient was a 17 old girl with mitral valvular symptoms that occured suddenly three months prior to operation. After the onset of symptoms. it was progressively aggravated to serious general condition. The preoperative diagnosis of left atrial tumor was made from echocardiography. and the tumor was confirmed as myxoma by the histopathological examination of the tumor tissue removed during operation. The myxoma was unusually originated from posterior wall of the left atrium. which was located between drainage orifices of right and left pulmonary veins, The tumor developed in the left atrial cavity and one of the polypoid processes of the myxoma was prolapsed into the the left ventricle through the mitral orifice. Following operation. there was no evidence for peripheral vascular embolism, and all valvular symptoms disappeared. The postoperative course was uneventful.

  • Primary intimal sarcoma of the pulmonary artery is a rare disease and there has been no report of any case originating from the pulmonary valve. Recently we experienced a 62 year-old female patient who had a primary intimal sarcoma of the pulmonary valve with distal metastasis. She was brought to medical attention due to exertional dyspnea facial edema productive coughing and general weakness for 1 month. Chest CT and echocardi-ography suggest an acute pulmonary thromboembolism or tumor. Exploration showed a large polypoid mass arising from the pulmonary leaflets and multiple masses on distal pulmonary arteries. We replaced the pulmonary valve and reconstructed the pulmonary artery. She received radiotherapy 1 month postoperatively and now 4 months after surgery she has begun receiving chemotherapy.

  • Heterotopic pancreas (HP) is defined as pancreatic tissue lacking anatomic and vascular continuity with the main body of the pancreas. Most are asymptomatic, but can cause ulcer, bleeding, intussusception, and mechanical obstruction. Herein, we presented one case of HP presented as duodenal tumor causing duodenal obstruction. A 7-year-old girl visited the emergency room for abdominal pain with vomiting for 24 hours. Computed tomography and upper gastrointestinal series revealed a polypoid mass with short stalk in the 2nd portion of duodenum. We attempted an endoscopic removal. However, the lumen was nearly obstructed by the mass and the stalk was too broad and hard to excise. The mass was surgically removed via duodenotomy. It was confirmed as a HP with ductal and acini components (type 2 by Heinrich classification). Postoperatively, the patient has been well without any complication and recurrence.

  • We experienced one case of endobronchial hamartoma on left lower lobar bronchus in sixty year old male patient. Less than 1 % of lung tumors are benign, and the prevalence of endobronchial hamartoma is reported to be from 3 % to 40 %. The mean age was 52.9 years, and equal gender prevalence.Symptoms were related to intraluminal growth, including fever, chill, productive cough, hemoptysis, exertional dyspnea, recurrent pneumonia and so on. Bronchoscopic finding was tumor present as polypoid mass in the lumen of a left main stem bronchus, distal to 3 cm from carina. Biopsy was done. The histopathologic pattern showed several nodules of loose myxoid tissue and islands of cartilage. We performed partial resection of the affected bronchus,1cm anterior to the superior segmental bronchial opening to just distal from superior segmental orifice. Including superior segmentectomy, partial resection of the left lower lobar bronchial resection and end-to-end anastomosis with 4-0 Poly dioxanone sutere materials interruptedly. We report this case with the brief review of literatures.

  • Sarcomatoid carcinomas are biphasic tumors which have surface epithelial changes and an underlying spindle-shaped neoplastic proliferation. A 62-year-old male with hoarseness came to our hospital for evaluation. A single smooth polypoid lesion was detected on his right true vocal fold by larnygoscope. The patient was diagnosed with vocal polyp and treated with surgical excision. Pathology report of the excised specimen was compatible with sarcomatoid carcinoma. Therefore, further surgical resection was performed to secure safety margins. We report a case of a sarcomatoid carcinoma patient who was clinically diagnosed as vocal polyp.

  • Cardiac myxomas are the most common primary benign tumors of uncertain etiology. They usually present as polypoid or oval-shaped masses projecting into a heart chamber from the interatrial septum and have a soft, gelatinous consistency without a cystic structure. We report a case of left atrial myxoma with a single cystic form.

  • An unusual polypoid laryngeal tumor has been studied with light and electron microscopy. In light microscopic section, there were two components: a squamous cell carcinoma and a sarcomatoid spindle cell population. Transitional zone between these two components was found. The electron micrographs demonstrated the presence of slender bundles of tonofilaments in many tumor cells. Desmosomes were present, but few in number and poorly developed. Findings suggest this laryngeal tumor as a spindle cell variant of squamous cell carcinoma.

  • Laser is a relatively recent addition to laryngeal surgery. Since their invention, laser use and applications have expanded rapidly. The use of lasers in surgery has offered a time- and cost-efficient alternative to cold surgical techniques and has been used in the treatment of numerous laryngeal pathologies, including stenoses, recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, leukoplakia, nodules, malignant laryngeal disease, and polypoid degeneration (Reinke's edema). Despite the notable benefits, laser surgery is not without disadvantages. Laser heat can increase scarring and cause damage to adjacent tissue. With laser laryngeal microsurgery, there is potential for airway fire, endolaryngeal bleeding, perichondritis, chondritis, granuloma, surgical emphysema, laryngeal stenosis and web formation, postoperative edema and swallowing problem. Surgeons should be known about these complications and could manage properly.
