In order to investigate the effect of nonionic surfactants on the antimicrobial activity of preservatives in the presence and absence of p.0.E(20) Sorbitan fatty acid ester commonly used in cosmetics and pharmaceutical systems, these experiments were carried out by determining Minimum Inhibitory Concentration(MIC) values and MIC values of adaptation against test organisms. And also the inactivation of the preservative against each microorganism in formula added with various concentrations of P.0.E(20) Sorbitan monostearate were measured by use of a preservative death time curve The results obtained were as fort low : 1) Nonionic surfactant inactivated Methylparaben to varying extents, but not Imidazolidinyl urea. 2) A combined preservative system was inactivated to a little extent (range of 0.16-0.20% Conc.), no adaptation was observed for the 5. aureus ATCC 6538. Imidazolidinyl urea complex combined with Methylparaben had a broad antibacterial spectrum against the Gram(.) and the Gram(-) bacteria It was found that preservatives had a synergistic effect by use of mixed form of preservatives, 3) In formula preserved with 0.2% Methylparaben containing 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0% P.0.E(20) Sorbitan monostearate, E. coli ATCC 10s36 and P. aeruginosa NCTC 10490 died quickly within in 2hr 4) However, from Fig.5, S. aereus ATCC 6538 died more slowly within increasing surfactant concentration and the D-values(Decimal reduction time) were 5.2, 8 and 14 hr. for samples containing 0.5, 1 0 and 2.0% P 0. E(20) Sorbitan monostearate, respectively. 5) In the case of Methylparaben, no adaptation for the E. coli ATCC 10536 6) All of the nonionic surfactant, p.0. E(20) Sorbitan fatty acid ester used in the experiments decreased the effectiveness of Methylparaben, but not of Imidazolidinyl urea.

A new and unique class of nonionic surfactants was synthesized by reacting biological a-tocopherol with ethylene oxide for functional cosmetics. The structures were confirmed by Hl-UMR, FT-lR, TLC and elemental analysis. POV and conjugated diene value study for EPO showed POE(n)TE had antioxidative effect similar to tocopheryl acetate Protective effect on cell membrane in photohemolysis of POE(5)TE, POE(10)TE and POE(18)TE were slightly lower than tocopherol but higher than nonoxynol-12, and POE(10)TE had UV absorption power comparable with tocopherol and homosalate. Biological activity of the hydrophobic group of the new surfactants make them unique and different from those of conventional nonionic surfactants Systematic safety evaluations of POE(n)TEs on the skin and eye proved that they are as safe as tocopherol. The results of physicochemical study showed POE(10)TE had the lowest CMC value, POE(18)TE had the maximum surface tension reduction and the highest foam volume and POE(n)TEs had various HLB values by the degree of ethoxylation. The test resul Is of technological and practical applications of these surfactants for cosmetics showed some POE(n)TEs were superior to conventional surfactants. POE(5)TE in W/O emulsions, POE(10)TE and POE(12)TE in O/W emulsions, POE(12)TE in dispersions, POE(18)TE in solubilizations and POE(50)TE in gelations were shown to be excellent which was considered due to the structural characteristic and formation of liquid crystals of POE(n)TEs. By the development and applications of these excel lent multi-functional surfactants, innovative functional cosmetics were successfully formulated.
Methoxy polyoxyethylene dodecanoates, kinds of nonionic surfactants, could be obtained from addition of ethylene oxide (5, 7, 9, and 12mol) with fatty acid methyl ester utilizing solid catalyst, metal oxide. Because ethylene oxide (EO) couldn't react directly in acid or alkali catalyst with dodecanoic acid methyl ester (DME) that had no active hydrogen, the reaction to add EO was carried out using active solid catalyst. By using IR, HPLC and $^1H$ NMR analysis, structural confirmation of methyl polyoxy ethylene dodecanate showed high yield ranging from 93 to 97%. EO unit mol number of reacted products was 5.2, 7.1, 9.2 and 12.1 mol respectively. Also, EO adduct distrobution of ethoxylated methyl laurate (MPD) had normal distribution curve like polyoxyethylene alkyl ether (AE).
Removal of sulfur compounds in the petroleum products is essential for the prevention of sulfur oxides. However, conventional methods involving catalytic reactions are found to have some limitations in complete removal of harmful sulfur compounds and to require relatively high cost. Recently, desulfurization process using microorganisms is known to be promising in terms of excellent sulfur removal efficiency and reasonably low treatment cost. For the biodesulfurization process to be effective, the solubilization of sulfur compounds into aqueous solution is a prerequisite. In this study, polyoxyethylene nonionic surfactants were used in order to enhance the solubilization of sulfur spectrophotometer. The solubilization of sulfur compounds was found to increase with temperature and to bo abruptly increased at above 1 wt % surfactant solutions. It was also observed that the longer the hydrophobic chain of the surfactant molecule, the higher solubilizing power of a nonionic surfactant. It was found that the Tergitol series surfactants showed higher solubilizing capacity than Neodol series presumably due to the disruption of the regular packing in the hydrocarbon region of the surfactant aggregates.

Properties of aqueous solution, that is, the viscosities and solubilities of benzene were observed in relation to critical micelle concentration of each alkyl aldehyde polyoxyethylene glycol acetal type surfactant. These showed that the mininum points in specific viscosity/concentration-concentration curves were corresponded with the critical micelle concentration obtained by surface tension and appeared the remarkable increase of non-Newtonics according to the increase of the number of carbon in hydrophobic groups. The fluidity of non-Newtonics is not observed by a little increase of the degree of polymerization in polyoxyethylene glycol groups.
In order to improve the adhesion of water-based adhesive, gemini type nonionic reactive surfactants were synthesized and applied to water-based adhesives. The surfactants were synthesized by using maleic acid and polyoxyethylene cetyl ether having different length of ethylene oxide and confirmed by FT-IR and $^1H-NMR$. Their appearance was light yellow wax. The cloud point of the compound was more than $78^{\circ}C$. The measured critical micelle concentration (c.m.c) was $1.0{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}7.0{\times}10^{-4}mol/L$ and surface tension at c.m.c was 25.9~32.0 mN/m. As the number of ethylene oxide increased, the emulsifying power was improved. The foaming height of each compound by Ross-Miles method was 1.4~4.5 cm. The synthesized surfactants was then used as an emulsifier in emulsion polymerization of water-based adhesives and its physical properties were evaluated. The solid contents of prepared adhesives was 59%. The average particle size and initial tackiness of the prepared adhesives were 164~297 nm and ball no. of 20~32, respectively. The peel strength was $1.8{\sim}2.1kg_f/mm$. The retention rate of adhesives viscosity was evaluated to 99% during 30 days. Therefore, synthesized gemini type nonionic reactive surfactants are expected to be applied as an emulsifier for the high adhesive force.
The biodegradation of ($C^{14}$)phenanthrene was studied in water and soil-water systems with nonionic surfactants and biosurfactant : polyoxyethylene alkyl ester($C_{17}$$H_33$COO($C_2$$H_4$O)nH) and sophorolipid. The extents of so1ubilization and biodegradation were monitored by radiotracer technique. Experimental results showed that surfactant concentrations above the critical micelle concentration were toxic to the phenanthrene-degrading bacteria in soil or active sludge and the presence of surfactant micelles inhibited mineralization of PAHs. Solubility and bioavailibility of phenanthrene in water and soil-water system were enhanced by mixed surfactants system. The optimum water content and hydrogen concentration were 30% (w/v) , pH 7, respectively.
Microemulsion is prepared by the method of phase inversion emulsification with d-limonene that is environmental friendly substance and nontoxic to human body as dispersed phase. Emulsifier used for preparation of microemulsion is nonionic surfactants, polyoxyethylene nonylphenyl ether. Stability of prepared microemulsion was estimated by the various method of ξ-potential, hydrodynamic diameter and electric conductivity. When d-limonene is emulsified by NP series, microemulsion is most stable and narrowly distributed at HLB value of 12.3(either one emulsifier or mixed emulsifiers). Stability of microemulsion is increased as the amount of emulsifiers is increased at same HLB value of 12.3. In the case of using the same amount of emulsifiers, number of produced micelle are relatively large as hydrodynamic diameter is small. Therefore, the state of microemulsion is stable and the electric conductivity is increased. One can determine that higher electric conductivity value means that microemulsion has more micelles and is more stable.

In this study, we synthesized reactive surfactant which have functional radical group for effective chemical reaction. Reactive surfactant have been synthesized using synthesis of polyoxyethylene lauryl ether(POE 23) which is nonionic surfactant and methacrylic acid, acrylic acid. benzene was used as the solvent, p-TsOH was used as the catalyst. synthesized surfactant was confirmed by FT-IR, $^1H$-NMR spectra, and elemental analysis. Evaluation of physical properties was measured HLB, cloud point, surface tension, the critical micelle concentration, emulsifying power. HLB number was evaluated 11.62 to 12.09 range. The Critical Micelle Concentration(cmc) values evaluated was $1{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}5{\times}10^{-4}mol/L$ by surface tension method. The cloud point was $35^{\circ}C$, $39^{\circ}C$ each. The emulsifymvcqa ing properties of the synthesized surfactants was lower than polyoxyethylene lauryl ether. In addition, soybean oil was better than benzene. The experimental results confirmed the ester bond, the yield of 93.27%, 94.49% was found.
Emulsions were prepared with the inversion emulsification method which adopted the agent-in-oil method-dissolving the mixed surfactants composed of the glycerin monostearate, polyoxyethylene(100) monostearate, and polyoxyethylene(20) sorbitan monostearate into mixtures of liquid paraffin and beeswax, and adding the aqueous solution of propylene glycol, gradually-and then their phases and viscosities behaviors in the emulsifying process were investigated. The fine and homogeneous o/w emulsions were formed in the HLB region (HLB 10.1~12.3), showing liquid crystalline phase and white gel phase in the emulsifying process. The phase inversion steps in the emulsifying process appeared as follows, i.e., oil continuous phase${\rightarrow}$liquid crystalline phase${\rightarrow}$white gel phase${\rightarrow}$o/w emulsion. Shear rate-shear stress curves of the prepared emulsions had the yield values which pointed out the existence of inner structure between emulsion particles, and the hysteresis loop which showed that the inner structure wasbroken irreversibly by the shear. The area of hystersis loop, an index of breakdown of inner structure, was increased with the decreasing of the HLB value of emulsifier, Shear time-shear stress curves showed the time dependence of plastic viscosity, and the relaxation time in time thinning behavior(${\lambda}$) indicated that the stability of emulsions prepared with the inversion emulsification method was decreased with the increasing of HLB values of emulsifier and was higher than that of emulsions prepared by homomixer.
