To clarify the structure development of cyclic olefin copolymers in stretching and relaxation processes, on-line measurements of optical retardation and tensile force were performed. Birefringence increased continuously whereas stress showed yielding at stretching temperatures of $160^{\circ}C$. At $170^{\circ}C$, stress yielding was not observed and stress and birefringence increased monotonously with an increase in the strain. In the relaxation process, stress and birefringence decreased monotonously at all the temperatures examined. The slope for the stress vs. birefringence relation at initial stage of stretching increased with an increase in temperature, whereas that for the relaxation stage was significantly larger that for the stretching process, and therefore showed a significant hysteresis.

The study was executed for development of sensing elements of electronic tongue which could discriminate taste of liquid and semi-liquid foods. Five polymeric membranes which were composed of polymer, plasticizer, electro-active materials were prepared. After each polymeric membranes were mounted in an electrode body, membrane potentials due to electrochemical reaction with taste stimuli were measured. The experimental results were interpreted in view of the membrane's non-selective responses to stimuli.

The sealing integrity is related to the safe operation of arrester the prime failure reason of porcelain housed arresters is moisture ingress. To be a meaningful tests a polymer arrester sealing test must be a realistic acceleration of field service. We think the test should be an accelerating course of actual temperatures, the enduring property to mechanical load and temperatures should be considered together. A union test method consisting of the thermal mechanical test and thermal cycling test is proposed to test the sealing integrity of polymeric arresters, which uses dielectric loss, leakage current 1mA DC voltage and partial discharge as the diagnostic techniques, and the test results were presented. The comparison states that the TMTCUT method is suitable fur the test of sealing integrity of polymeric arresters. .
Spheres of silicon resins with different compositions were prepared in one-step reaction from mixtures of water and water-insoluble precursors of polysiloxanes (PSO) and polysilsesquioxanes (PSQ) using different amines as catalysts. The presence of PSO and PSQ in the spheres was confirmed by their mechanical properties and FTIR spectroscopy. Spheres of pure PSO were obtained from only dimethoxymethylvinylsiloxane (DMMVS) and 3-mercaptopropylmethyldimethoxysilan (MPMDMS) when the reaction was induced with appropriate catalysts. DMMVS and MPMDMS always gave the most promising results regarding the formation of discrete solid spheres with the minimum tendency to form monolithic solids or fluid-like, premature products. The spheres were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The mixtures containing larger amounts of PSO precursors commonly gave lower yields and softer spheres.
[ $LaMeO_3$ ](Me = Cr, Co) powders were prepared using the polymeric precursor method. The effects of the chelating agent and the polymeric additive on the synthesis of the $LaMeO_3$ perovskite were studied. The samples were synthesized using ethylene glycol (EG) as the solvent, acetyl acetone (AcAc) as the chelating agent, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the polymer additive. The thermal decomposition behavior of the precursor powder was characterized using a thermal analysis (TG-DTA). The crystallization and particle sizes of the $LaMeO_3$ powders were investigated via powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and particle size analyzer, respectively. The as-prepared precursor primarily has $LaMeO_3$ at the optimum condition, i.e. for a molar ratio of both metal-source (a : a) : EG (80a : 80a) : AcAc (8a) inclusive of 1 wt% PVP. When the as-prepared precursor was calcined at $700^{\circ}C$, only a single phase was observed to correspond with the orthorhombic structure of $LaCrO_3$ and the rhombohedral structure of $LaCoO_3$. A solid-electrolyte impedance-metric sensor device composed of $Li_{1.5}Al_{0.5}Ti_{1.5}(PO_4)_3$ as a transducer and $LaMeO_3$ as a receptor has been systematically investigated for the detection of NOx in the range of 20 to 250 ppm at $400^{\circ}C$. The sensor responses were able to divide the component between resistance and capacitance. The impedance-metric sensor for the NO showed higher sensitivity compared with $NO_2$. The responses of the impedance-metric sensor device showed dependence on each value of the NOx concentration.
Enzymatic catalysis has been pursued extensively in a wide range of important chemical processes for their unparalleled selectivity and mild reaction conditions. However, enzymes are usually costly and easy to inactivate in their free forms. Immobilization is the key to optimizing the in-service performance of an enzyme in industrial processes, particularly in the field of non-aqueous phase catalysis. Since the immobilization process for enzymes will inevitably result in some loss of activity, improving the activity retention of the immobilized enzyme is critical. To some extent, the performance of an immobilized enzyme is mainly governed by the supports used for immobilization, thus it is important to fully understand the properties of supporting materials and immobilization processes. In recent years, there has been growing concern in using polymeric materials as supports for their good mechanical and easily adjustable properties. Furthermore, a great many work has been done in order to improve the activity retention and stabilities of immobilized enzymes. Some introduce a spacer arm onto the support surface to improve the enzyme mobility. The support surface is also modified towards biocompatibility to reduce non-biospecific interactions between the enzyme and support. Besides, natural materials can be used directly as supporting materials owning to their inert and biocompatible properties. This review is focused on recent advances in using polymeric materials as hosts for lipase immobilization by two different methods, surface attachment and encapsulation. Polymeric materials of different forms, such as particles, membranes and nanofibers, are discussed in detail. The prospective applications of immobilized enzymes, especially the enzyme-immobilized membrane bioreactors (EMBR) are also discussed.
Soft polymeric materials have gained importance in recent years, namely in food, pharmaceuticals, photographic media, adhesives, vibration dampeners and superabsorbers (to name a few), but also as inter-mediates for selforganization of molecules or supramolecules into long range order. Many of these soft materials are close to their gel point, i.e. they are liquids just before reaching their gel point or they are solids which have barely passed the gel point. New rheological methods need to be developed for the understanding of these soft materials; the typical liquid properties (viscosity) and typical solid properties (modulus) are not applicable since they diverge at the gel point. This will be discussed in the following. Fortunately, chemical gelation experiments with model polymers has given insight into the behavior at the gel point (Winter and Mours, 1997). This knowledge of the critical gel provides us with a reference state when working with soft polymeric materials. Chemical gels will serve as model materials for the exploration of physical gels. A novel method for detecting the gel point has been proposed: the instant of liquid-to-solid transition(gel point) is marked by the crossover of the normalized dynamic moduli G'/cos($n_c$$\pi$/2) and G"/sin($n_c$$\pi$/2).>/2).
The objective of the current investigation is to establish techniques in micro pattern forming operations of polymeric circular tubes by using hydrostatic pressing. This method was developed and successfully applied to the micro pattern forming on polymeric plates. The key idea of the new technique is to pressurize multiple vacuum-packed substrate-mold stacks above the glass transition temperature of the polymeric substrates. The new process is thought to be a promising micro-pattern fabrication technique for two reasons; first, (hydro-) isostatic pressing ensures a uniform micro-pattern replicating condition regardless of the substrate area and thickness. Second, multiple curved substrates can be patterned at the same time. With the prototype forming machine for the new process, micro prismatic array patterns, 25um in height and 90 degrees in apex angle, were successfully made on the PMMA circular tubes with diameters of 5~40mm. These results show that this process can be also used in the micro pattern forming process on curved plates such as circular tube.

Recently polymeric insulators and arresters are being used for outdoor high voltage applications. Polymeric insulators for transmission line have significant advantages over porcelain and glass insulators, especially for ultra-high voltage(UHV) transmission lines. Their advantages are light weight, vandalism resistance and hydrophobicity. Polymeric insulator kind are a relatively new technology, but their expected life is still unknown. In this paper, the material property for polymeric insulating material such as silicone rubber and EPBM is investigated by cross-link time and the relation between tracking resistance and W resistance is analyzed by IEC 60587 and W aging experiment.
