  • In the polymeric dental restorative composites, the resin matrix mainly contains 70 wt% 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl] propane (Bis-GMA), as a base resin and 30 wt% triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) as a diluent. Even though the viscosity of the resin matrix is rapidly decreased by adding TEGDMA, addition of TEGDMA to the Bis-GMA results in reduction in the mechanical properties and increase in the curing shrinkage of the dental composite. In order to fabricate dental composite exhibiting excellent properties by reducing TEGDMA content in the resin matrix, in this study, Bis-GMA derivatives, which do not contain hydroxyl groups, were used instead of Bis-GMA. The curing characteristics of Bis-GMA derivatives were similar with those of Bis-GMA, while the former exhibited lower viscosity and water absorption than the latter. Comparing the curing shrinkage of the dental composite containing Bis-GMA derivative with that prepared from Bis-GMA, the reduction in curing shrinkage was about 25%. Dental composites prepared from new resin matrices also exhibited low water uptake and better properties in mechanical strength.

  • The low viscous epoxy resin(bisphenol F) with carboxylic acid as the reductants was introduced for high performance and reliability in the ACA with a low melting point alloy filler system. The curing characteristics of the epoxy resin and temperature dependant viscosity characteristic of epoxy resin at the melting temperature of LMPA were investigated by dynamic mode of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and rheometer, respectively. Based on these thermo-rheological characteristics of epoxy resin and LMPA, the optimum process system was designed. In order to remove the oxide layer on the surface of LMPA particle, three different types of carboxyl acid-based reductant were added to the epoxy resin. The wetting angles were about $18^{\circ}$ for carboxypropyldisilioxane, and $20.3^{\circ}$ for the carboxy-2-methylethylsiloxane, respectively.

  • Amino terminated PES-CTBN-PES triblock copolymer was synthesized from PES oligomer and commercial CTBN rubber (CTBN1300$\times$13), and molecular weight of the copolymer was controlled to be 15000 g/mole. The copolymer was utilized to toughen diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy resin which was cured with 4,4'-diaminodi-phenylsulfone (DDS) and subjected to the measurement of thermal properties, fracture toughness ( $K_{IC}$), flexural properties and solvent resistance. The properties were compared with those from the samples modified by CTBN/PES blends. The maximum loading of copolymer into the epoxy resin was 40 wt% without utilizing solvent, at which $K_{IC}$ fracture toughness of 2.21 MPa${\cdot}m^{0.5}$ was obtained without sacrificing flexural properties and chemical resistance. However, the epoxy resin modified with PES/CTBN blend exhibited much lower $K_{IC}$ and flexural properties compared to the epoxy resins toughened by PES-CTBN-PES copolymers.

  • Resol type phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin was synthesized by addition reaction of formaldehyde (F) and phenol (P). And the PF resin was synthesized by condensation reaction in which water was removed. In this work, we studied the influence of experimental parameters in the addition reaction, such as F/P mole ratio, amount of catalyst, reaction temperature, reaction time, and so on. Also, we studied the influence of molecular weight and viscosity of PE resin as a function of condensation time. As a result, in addition reaction, the reaction time decreased remarkably as the catalyst concentration increased, and the time decreased with increasing reaction temperature at a constant catalyst concentration. Also, in condensation reaction, the viscosity of resol type PF resin increased from 1500 to 9000 cps as a function of condensation time; molecular weight showed from 500 to 1100 g/mol.

  • The polymer-ceramic hybrid, known as 'ceramer', was synthesized by a sol-gel process by incorporating different amount of alkoxide as source of silicon in resorcinol-formaldehyde in presence of basic catalyst to get different percentage of silicon in ultimate carbonized composites. FTIR of the ceramer confirms that it is a network of Si-O-Si, Si-O-$CH_2$ and Si-OH type groups linked with benzene ring. Different amount of silicon in the ceramer exhibits varying temperature of thermal stability and lower coefficient of thermal expansion as compared to pure resorcinol-formaldehyde resin. The lower value of CTE in ceramer is due to existence of silica and resorcinol -formaldehyde in co-continuous phase. Unidirectional composites prepared with ceramer matrix and high-strength carbon fibers show lower value of flexural strength at polymer stage as compared to those prepared with resorcinol-formaldehyde resin. However, after heat treatment to $1450^{\circ}C$, the ceramer matrix composites show large improvement in the mechanical properties, i.e. with 7% silicon in the ceramer, the flexural strength is enhanced by 100% and flexural modulus value by 40% as compared to that of pure resorcinol-formaldehyde resin matrix composites.

  • In the present work, a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) composite, filled with Zn-ion coated structural silica encapsulated with the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA), was synthesized using the conventional melt-blending technique in a sigma internal mixer. The catalytic activity of the Zn-ions (originating from the structural silica) towards the oxirane group (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA): encapsulating agent) was assessed by infrared spectroscopy. Two composites, each with a filler content of $2.5 wt\%$ were developed. The first one was obtained by melt blending the Zn-ion coated structural silica with LDPE in a co-rotating sigma internal mixer. The second one was obtained by melt blending the same LDPE, but with DGEBA encapsulated Zn-ion coated structural silica. Epoxy resin encapsulation of the Zn-ion coated structural silica resulted in its having good interfacial adhesion and a homogeneous dispersion in the polymer matrix. Furthermore, the encapsulation of epoxy resin over the Zn-ion coated structural silica showed improvements in both the mechanical and thermal properties, viz. a $33\%$ increase in the elastic modulus and a rise in the onset degradation temperature from 355 to $371^{\circ}C$, in comparison to the Zn-ion coated structural silica.

  • A comparative study using electron-beam(EB) and thermal curing techniques was carried out to determine the effect of cure behavior and thermal stability of epoxy resins. In this work, benzylquinoxalinium hexafluoroantimonate(BQH) was used as a latent cationic catalyst for an epoxy resin. According to the thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), the decomposed activation energy based on Coats-Redfern method was higher in the case of thermal curing technique. This could be interpreted in terms of slow thermal diffusion rate resulted from high crosslink density of the thermally cured epoxy resin. However, the increase of hydroxyl group in the epoxy resin cured by EB technique was observed in near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS) measurements, resulting in improving the stable short aromatic chain structure, integral procedural decomposition temperature, and finally ductile properties for high impact strengths.

  • To prepare weather-resistant modified silane acrylic resin coatings for an architectural purpose, tetrapolymers were synthesized by radical polymerization. 3-Methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTS) as a silicone monomer and n-butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, and n-butyl methacrylate as acrylic monomers were used. The composition of monomers was adjusted to fix the glass transition temperature of acrylic polymer for $20^{\circ}C$. The composition of MPTS in the synthesized polymer were varied from 10 wt% to 30 wt%. On the basis of synthesized resin amber paints were prepared and their physical properties and effects on weatherability were examined. The presence of MPTS in modified silane acrylic resins generally resulted in low molecular weight and broad molecular weight distribution, and also lowered the viscosity of the copolymers. The coated films prepared from these resins showed good and balanced properties in general. Adhesion to the substrate was outstanding in particular. Weatherability tests were carried out in three different types such as outdoor exposure, QUV, and SWO. The test results showed that the modified silane acrylic resins containing 30 wt% of MPTS had superior weathering properties.

  • $TiO_2$ nanoparticles can be used to improve the performance of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites. In this study, the effect of the size of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites was investigated. The size of the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles was easily controlled using heat treatment. The size of the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles for this study were20nm, 100nm, and 200nm. Three types of carbon fibers with different diameters were also used in this study. The carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin composites with 20-nm $TiO_2$ powder showed the highest tensile strength compared to the other types of CFRP, regardless of the fiber maker or fiber diameter. The size of the $TiO_2$ powder and the diameter of the carbon fiber strongly affected the interfacial properties of all kinds of CFRP in this study.
