In recent decades, pultruded glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) members including those of box sections have attracted the attention of researchers. Nevertheless, the lack of uniform and consistent material properties, simplified design methods, and practical design codes have so far been the main barrier for field applications. Consequently, this paper highlights the existing knowledge concerning the flexural behavior of pultruded GFRP profiles and their failure modes. In particulate, it reviews the most commonly accepted design expressions and code provisions addressing the flange local buckling of pultruded GFRP box beams as the most likely failure mode. In addition, the material characterization of GFRP sections is described in detail along with the standard test methods to quantify the material characterization of GFRP laminates. It is shown that the critical flange local buckling stresses of pultruded GFRP box beams can be predicted with reliable accuracy using the expressions promulgated by ASCE (1984) (in which the flange plates are considered simply-supported at web-flange junction) and EUR 27666. The expressions stipulated in ASCE (2010) highly overestimates the critical flange local buckling stresses of GFRP box beams resulting in unconservative predictions.
In the oil and gas industry, composite materials should exhibit high flexibility and strength for offshore structures. Therefore, weak points in the composites should be improved, such as brittleness, moisture penetration, and diffusion of detrimental ions into nanometric pores. This study aimed to increase the strength, flexibility, and plugging of nanopores using single-layer graphene oxide (SGO) nanosheets. Therefore, SGO is added to unsaturated polyester resin at concentrations of 0.015 and 0.15 % with Normal Methyl Pyrrolidone (NMP) as a solvent for the formation of Nanographene Oxide Reinforced Polymer (NGORP). The mechanical properties of the prepared samples were tested using tensile testing (ASTM-D 638). It has been shown that incorporating SGO, approximately 0.015%, into the base resin resulted in enhanced properties such as rupture resistance forces increased by 745.61 N, applied stress tolerances increased by 4.1 MPa, longitude increased to 1.58 mm, elongation increased by about 2.38%, and rupture energy increased by about 204.51 J. Despite the decrease in tensile force strength properties in the manufactured nanocomposite with 0.15% SGO, it has exclusive flexibility properties such as a high required energy level for rupture of 5,576 times and a formability of 40% more than the base sample. It would be best to use NGORP manufactured from 0.015% nanosheets with exclusive properties rather than base samples for constructing parts and equipment, such as rebars, composite sheets, and transmission pipes, on offshore platforms.
The present experimental investigation focuses on finding optimal parametric data-set of laser micro-drilling operation with minimum taper and Heat-affected zone during laser micro-drilling of Carbon Nanotube/Epoxy-based composite materials. Experiments have been conducted as per Box-Behnken design (BBD) techniques considering cutting speed, lamp current, pulse frequency and air pressure as input process parameters. Then, the relationship between control parameters and output responses is developed using second-order nonlinear regression models. The analysis of variance test has also been performed to check the adequacy of the developed mathematical model. Using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and an Accelerated particle swarm optimization (APSO) technique, optimum process parameters are evaluated and compared. Moreover, confirmation tests are conducted with the optimal parameter settings obtained from RSM and APSO and improvement in performance parameter is noticed in each case. The optimal process parameter setting obtained from predictive RSM based APSO techniques are speed=150 (m/s), current=22 (amp), pulse frequency (3 kHz), Air pressure (1 kg/cm2) for Taper and speed=150 (m/s), current=22 (amp), pulse frequency (3 kHz), air pressure (3 kg/cm2) for HAZ. From the confirmatory experimental result, it is observed that the APSO metaheuristic algorithm performs efficiently for optimizing the responses during laser micro-drilling process of nanocomposites both in individual and multi-objective optimization.
Recently, as construction technology improved, concrete structures not only became larger, taller and longer but were able to perform various functions. However, if extreme loads such as impact, blast, and fire are applied to those structures, it would cause severe property damages and human casualties. Especially, the structural responses from extreme loading are totally different than that from quasi-static loading, because large pressure is applied to structures from mass acceleration effect of impact and blast loads. Therefore, the strain rate effect and damage levels should be considered when concrete structure is designed. In this study, the low velocity impact loading test of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) slabs including 0%~1.5% (by volume) of steel fibers, and strengthened with two types of FRP sheets was performed to develop an impact resistant structural member. From the test results, the maximum impact load, dissipated energy and the number of drop to failure increased, whereas the maximum displacement and support rotation were reduced by strengthening SFRC slab with FRP sheets in tensile zone. The test results showed that the impact resistance of concrete slab can be substantially improved by externally strengthening using FRP sheets. This result can be used in designing of primary facilities exposed to such extreme loads. The dynamic responses of SFRC slab strengthened with FRP sheets under low velocity impact load were also analyzed using LS-DYNA, a finite element analysis program with an explicit time integration scheme. The comparison of test and analytical results showed that they were within 5% of error with respect to maximum displacements.

In the nuclear power plant, the steel or polymer liner plates are adopted to prohibit the inner concrete surface from contacting with gas or liquid materials. If there is an accident, the plate may be damaged, and, in this case, concrete shall have the final responsibility to safety requirements. In this paper, an experimental research was carried out to investigate the effects of construction joint and wet and loading conditions on the permeability of concrete. The test results showed that, under a construction joint in the wet condition, leakage of gas pressure has been started from $1kg/cm^2$. However, when there are no construction joints, it is initiated from $2kg/cm^2$. In addition, under the air dried and unloading condition, regardless of with or without the presence of the construction joint, since the gas passage that exist in concrete is constant, leakage has a constant tendency to increase. Finally, under the loading condition, as described in Reference 1, since leakage is inversely proportional to the thickness of the wall, and, considering the wall thickness of the actual plant, it is found that there will not be no problem in the sealing of the gas.
The corrosion of steel rebars has been the major cause of reinforced concrete deterioration. FRP(Fiber-reinforced polymer) rebar has emerged as one of the most promising and affordable solutions to the corrosion problems of steel reinforcement in structural concrete. However, FRP rebar is prone to deteriorate due to other degradation mechanisms than those for steel. The high alkalinity of concrete, for instance, is a possible degradation source. Therefore, the USA, Japan, Canada, UK. etc are using environmental reduction factor. Although difference design guidelines were drawn in many, including USA, Japan, Canada, UK etc, recommendations and coefficients that could take into account the long-term behavior of FRP reinforcement were not well defined. This study focuses on recommendation of environmental reduction factor of FRP rebar. Environment reduction factor were decided using durability test result. FRP rebars were subjected to twelve type of exposure conditions including alkaline solution, acid solution, salt solution and deionized water etc. The water absorption behavior was observed by means of simple gravimetric measurements and durability properties were investigated by performing tensile, compressive and short beam tests. Based on the experimental result, environmental reduction factor of hybrid FRP rebar(A), and (C) and CFRP rebar was decided as 0.85. Also, hybrid FRP rebar(B) and GFRP rebar were decided as 0.7 for the environmental reduction factor
The repair of concrete surfaces does not normally take into account structural tolerance for longer service lift and better capabilities of concrete structures. In particular, the repair of surface spelling completes as mortar is applied, which does not display additional structural performances. The use of crimped wire mesh for better construction and fracture resistance, however, expects to have some reinforcement effects. Particularly, it is also expected that the repair of bottom part in structures built between bridges like irrigation structures results in the increase of flexural resistance. Therefore, this study is intended to perform the repair using crimp wire mesh and examine strength depending on the repair section and depth. For this, a slab with 150 mm in depth, 3,000 mm in length and 600 mm in width and total 8 objects to experiment such as upper part, upper whole, bottom part, bottom whole and crimp wire mesh reinforced are manufactured to perform flexural performance. The results of the analysis show that yield strength and failure load increase as the depth of repair materials in the experiment reinforced with crimp wire mesh get bigger. In the same condition, repair of bottom part is able to increase internal force of bending force. Besides, the results show that partial repair of structures under bending force cannot produce flexural performance. Consequently, the repair method with crimp wire mesh results in the increase of flexural resistance.
The brittle nature in most FRP composites is accompanying other forms of energy absorption mechanisms such as fibre-matrix interface debonding and ply delamination. It could play an important role on the energy absorption capability of composite structures. To solve the brittle nature, the adhesion between pines and composites was studied. Thermal treated pines were attached on carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) by epoxy adhesives. To find the optimum condition of thermal treatment for pine, two different thermal treatments at 160 and $200^{\circ}C$ were compared to the neat case. To evaluate mechanical and interfacial properties of pines and pine/CFRP composites, tensile, lap shear and Izod test were carried out. The bonding force of pine grains was measured by tensile test at transverse direction and the elastic wave from fracture of pines was analyzed. The mechanical, interfacial properties and bonding force at $160^{\circ}C$ treated pine were highest due to the reinforced effect of pine. However, excessive thermal treatment resulted in the degradation of hemicellulose and leads to the deterioration in mechanical and interfacial properties.
Among the methods for enhancement of load-carrying capacity on flexural concrete member, recently, a concept is being investigated which replaces the steel in a conventional reinforced concrete member with a fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) shell. This study focuses on modeling of the structural behavior of concrete surrounded with FRP shells in flexural bending members. A numerical model of fiber cross-sectional analysis is proposed to predict the stress and deformation state of the FRP shell and concrete. The stress-strain relationship of concrete confined by a FRP shell is formulated to be based on the constitutive law of concrete in multi-axial compressive stress state, in assuming that the compression response is dependent on the radial expansion of the concrete. To describe the FRP shell behavior, equivalent orthotropic properties of in-plane behavior from classical lamination theory are used. The present model is validated to compare with the experiments of 4-point bending tests of FRP shell concrete beam, and has well predicted the moment-curvature relationships of the members, axial and hoop strains in the section, and the enhancement of confinement effect in concrete surrounded by FRP shell.

In this study, the hydrophilic chemical grout using silanol (HCGS) was introduced to overcome the limitations of conventional epoxy resin which have been used for strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Then, flexural tests on the RC slabs strengthened by FRP sheets were conducted. Three slab specimens were tested in this study; a control specimen with no strengthening, and two specimens strengthened by a typical epoxy resin or HCGS, respectively, as a binder between the slabs and the FRP sheets. In addition, an analytical model was developed to evaluate the flexural behavior of strengthened slab members, considering the horizontal shear force at the interface between concrete slabs and FRP sheets. The analysis results obtained from the proposed model indicated that the strengthened specimens showed fully composite behavior before their flexural failure. Especially, the specimen strengthened by HCGS, which can overcome the limitations of conventional epoxy resin, showed a similar flexural performance with that strengthened by a conventional epoxy resin.
