  • Various researches on the application of polymer dispersions to the cement mortar and concrete have been carried out in many countries like America, Japan and Germany and so on due to their high performance and good modification effect. PAE of polymer dispersion widely used in situ was employed that the high flowability may be induced in the cement mortar. In order to investigate the modification of cement mortar with high flowability by PAE and fracture mode of adhesive strength properties in tension of that, experimental parameters were set as PAE solid-cement ratio(P/C) and cement: fine aggregate(C:F) and the experiments such as unit weight, flow, consistency change, crack resistance and segregation that inform on the general properties have been done. Adhesion in tension is measured with a view to comprehending the properties and fracture mode in tensile load. Consistency change of cement mortar modified by PAE did grow better as the ratio of PAE solid-cement increased and was much superior to that of resin based flooring such as polyurethane and epoxy which recorded the loss of consistency in 90 min. after mixing. Adhesive strength in tension increased with continuity during curing period and showed the maximum in case of C:F=1:1 and P/C=20%.

  • In efforts to characterize and understand the properties and processing of phenylethynyl-terminated imide (LaRC PETI-5, simply referred to as PETI-5) oligomers and polymers as a high-temperature sizing material for carbon fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites, PETI-5 imidization and thermal curing behaviors have been extensively investigated based on the phenylethynyl end-group reaction. These studies are reviewed here. In addition, the use of PETI-5 to enhance interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers and a bismaleimide (BMI) matrix, as well as the dynamic mechanical properties of carbon/BMI composites, are discussed. Reports on the thermal expansion behavior of intercalated graphite flake, and the effects of exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (xGnP) on the properties of PETI-5 matrix composites are also reviewed. The dynamic mechanical and thermal properties and the electrical resistivity of xGnP/PETI-5 composites are characterized. The effect of liquid rubber amine-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile) (ATBN)-coated xGnP particles incorporated into epoxy resin on the toughness of xGnP/epoxy composites is examined in terms of its impact on Izod strength. This paper provides an extensive overview from fundamental studies on PETI-5 and xGnP, as well as applied studies on relevant composite materials.

  • In this work, two thermal cationic latent catalysts, i.e., triphenyl benzyl phosphonium hexafluoroantimonate (TBPH) and benzyl 2-methylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BMPH) were newly synthesized. And the thermal and mechanical properties of difunctional epoxy (diglycidylether of bisphenol h, DGEBA) resins initiated by 1 phr of either TBPH or BMPH catalyst were investigated. As experimental results, the epoxy/TBPH system showed higher curing temperature and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) than those of epoxy/BMPH. This could be interpreted in terms of slow thermal diffusion rate and bulk structure of four phenyl groups in TBPH. However, the decomposed activation energy determined from Coats-Redfern method was lower in the case of epoxy/TBPH. This result was probably due to the fact that broken short chain structure was developed by steric hindrance of TBPH.

  • Nitrile rubber (NBR) composites were prepared using the commercially avaliable rubber compounding process with Cloisite$^{(R)}$ 10A or carbon black as fillers. When Cloisite$^{(R)}$ 10A was used as a filler in the NBR composites, the mechanical properties, oil resistant, and oxygen barrier were better than those for carbon black composites. In cure characteristics of NBR/clay composites, scorch time and curing time were reduced. It was found that alkyl ammonium ion inserted in Cloisite$^{(R)}$ 10A was considered as an accelerator of vulcanization for NBR composites.

  • Low temperature retraction characteristics were investigated on the cured natural rubber with various ratios of crosslinking agents, filler and additives. The cured natural rubber product was elongated about 200% at $-40^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours and then retracted. In a definite range, the retraction was increased as the sulfur to accelerator ratio increased and as the filler contents decreased. The retraction was maximum for a definite range of amount of accelerators, plasticizer and activator. Adding some peroxide additively retraction characteristics improved and curing time got longer.

  • We designed and successfully synthesized UV curable, functional acrylate monomers having a polarizing group, i.e., an electron-withdrawing and/or electron-donating group for the optical materials of high refractive index. Optical polymer films made from the functional methacrylate monomers were achieved with photo crosslinking under UV illumination. A monomer having amino and cyano groups (Dimer-CN) exhibited the highest refractive index ($n_{TE}$=1.595 at 850nm) among the studied methacrylate derivatives, due to the large polarizability of the dipolar monomer structures with electron-donating and withdrawing groups. By controlling the compositions of the functional acrylate monomer of copolymers, the refractive indices of the polymers were readily adjusted within a wide range of 1.498-1.595. The copolymers showed a high glass transition temperature $(T_g)$ and good thermal stability, which are desirable for optical applications. $T_g$ and $T_{10%}$ (10%-weight loss occurred) of the copolymers ranged from $120-140^{\circ}C$ and from $329-387^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • The dichloro-polyester polyol (DCBAO) which was synthesized in our earlier work was cured at room temperature with two different type of curing agents including Desmodur N-3300 and Desmodur L-75 to get a polyurethane flame-retardant coatings (DCBAO/N-3300=DEBAN and DCBAO/L-75=DCBAL). We could not observe any deterioration of physical properties of the flame-retardant PU coatings (UCBAN and DCBAL) in comparison with the conventional PU coatings. Thermal resistance of DCBAL-type flame-retardant coatings, which was measured by yellowness index difference, was inferior to that of DCBAL-type PU coatings. We believe that this phenomena is attributed to the poor thermal resistance of Desmodur L-75 isocyanate. It was observed that the LOI values were 25∼26% for the PU coatings containing 20∼30 wt% of 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid.

  • To improve the interfacial bonding of carbon fiber-nylon 6 composite, carbon fiber(CF) were oxidized by nitric acid treatment, and two types of graft polymer(GP) of nylon 6-g-polyacrylamide (PAAm) -water dispersable GP(WDGP) and m-cresol solu ble GP(CSGP) were treated as coupling agents. Introduction of polar groups such as -COOH, -OH, etc, on the surface of the oxidized CF was confirmed by IR spectra. The stem polymer of nylon 6 in the coupling agent (GP) could be compatible with'matrix nylon 5, and the grafted branch of PAAm on GP could react to the polar groups on the oxidized CF in composite. The interfacial strength was measured by the transverse tensile test to the fiber direction for single CF embedded nylon 6 film especially prepared and by the pull-out test method. The interfacial strength of the composite reinforced with oxidized CF is greater than that reinforced with unoxidized CF. The interfacial strength of the composite was increased by treatment of coupling agents(GPs) considerably, and the increasing tendency by the WDGP is greater than that by the CSGP. The optimum conditions of coupling agent treatment are as follows: the concentration, adsorption tlme of GP, and curing temperature are 2%, 20 minutes, and $170^{\circ}$, respectively.

  • In order to improve the mechanical properties and fracture toughness of HPT 1071/DDS system, poly(aryl etherimide) (PEI) was incorporated in the resin system. In HPT 1071/DDS system, mechanical properties of cured epoxy resins were not strongly dependent on the concentration of DDS curing agent strongly. In the case of HPT 1071/DDS/PEI system, the fracture toughness and flexural properties of epoxy resins increased with increasing the concentration of PEI. SEM micrographs of cured epoxy resin indicated that the phase separation occured at the low concentration of PEI in this system. In addition, investigation of the relationship between mechanical properties and the morphology of modified epoxy resin was undertaken in HPT 1071/DDS/PEI system.

  • A large area micro mirror is an optical element that functions as changing an optical path by reflection in integrated optical system. We fabricated the large area silicon mirror by anisotropic etching using MEMS for implementation of integrated optical pickup. In this work, we report the optimum conditions to better fabricate and design, greatly improve mirror surface quality. To obtain mirror surface of $45^{\circ},\;9.74^{\circ}$ off-axis silicon wafer from (100) plane was used in etching condition of $80^{\circ}C$ with 40wt.% KOH solution. After wet etching, polishing process by MR fluid was applied to mirror surface for reduction of roughness. In the next step, after polymer coating on the polished Si wafer, the Si mirror was fabricated by UV curing using a trapezoid bar-type way structure. Finally, we obtained peak to valley roughness about 50 nm in large area of $mm^2$ and it is applicable to optical pickup using blu-ray wavelength as well as infrared wavelength.
