  • Magnesium oxide (MgO) reinforced polyamide-66 (PA66) composites were prepared through melt-compounding method in order to determine the possibility of using MgO particle as conductive filler in the polymer-based composite. The effects of MgO filler content on the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties for the PA66/MgO composites were investigated. The results showed that the addition of MgO filler to the PA66 matrix led to a large increase in thermal conductivity of the PA66/MgO composites. Tensile strengths of the PA66/MgO composites were slightly decreased as MgO filler loading increased. However, flexural strength and flexural modulus were improved with increasing filler loading. Notched Izod impact strengths were dramatically lowered by the addition of MgO filler.

  • Three solvent systems, chlorobenzene (ink 1), chlorobenzene/o-dichlorobenzene (ink 2) and chlorobenzene/tetrahydronaphthalene (ink 3), were compared as printable inks for the fabrication of polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) using poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyl-oxyl)-1,4-phenylenevinylene (MEH-PPV) as an emissive material and an inkjet printer (Fujifilm Dimatix DMP-2831). Ink 1 clogged the printer's nozzle and gave non-uniform film. Inks 2 and 3 were used to fabricate PLEDs with ITO/PEDOT:PSS/MEH-PPV/LiF/Al configurations. The best performance (turn-on voltage, 3.5 V; luminance efficiency, 0.17 cd/A; luminance, 1,800 cd/m) was obtained when ink 3 was used to form the emissive layer (thickness, 49 nm), attributable to the better morphology and suitable thickness of the MEH-PPV layer.

  • The feasibility of recycling wasted printed circuit board (PCB) is investigated by preparing PCB added flame retardant composites filled with either unsaturated polyester or polyurethane. In order to improve electroconductive properties, copper powder was added into the composites, which results also in improving their antistatic properties. The prepared composite samples showed a binding between the polymer fillers observed by a scanning microscope. The sample group using unsaturated polyester is elastomeric that led to appreciable elongation and elasticity. In case of polyurethane, the tensile strength increased proportionally as increase of the amount of PCB powder. The composite materials can be utilized as antistatic composite materials, since the surface resistivity result showed increase of the electroconductive properties by adding Cu. The flammability of the samples is not satisfactory according to UL-94 vertical test. However, the flame retardant properties were improved by adding PCB power. This study, therefore, showed that it is feasible to fabricate polymer composite materials and improve the material characteristics by adding PCB powder, which can replace existing additives used for the preparation of polymer composite materials and can reduce the environment contamination by recycling the wasted PCB.

  • Commercial PAN fibers were thermally stabilized at 220 or $240^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Those fibers were further stabilized using radio-frequency (RF) capacitive plasma discharge during 5 or 15 min. From Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results, it was observed that an additional plasma treatment led to further stabilization of PAN fibers. After stabilization, carbonization was performed to investigate the final tensile properties of the fabricated carbon fibers (CFs). The results revealed that a combination of thermal and plasma treatment is a possible stabilization process for manufacturing CFs. Morphology of CFs was investigated using scanning electron microscopy. The morphology shows that the plasma stabilization performed by the RF large gap plasma discharge may damage the surface of the CF, so it is necessary to select a proper process condition to minimize the damage.

  • In a recent effort to develop polymer light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as promising flat panel display components, measurements of reliable absolute photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) efficiency for polymer materials are required. In this work, we performed the measurement of PL and EL efficiency of luminescent polymers using an integrating sphere technique. The external PL efficiency of MEH-PPV was estimated to be 8 ($\pm$2)% together with the value of 0.02 1m/W for the external EL efficiency. This PL efficiency is in good agreement with published values, indicating that our PL efficiency measurements are somewhat legitimate. We believe this study might contribute to the research and development of organic materials for optoelectronic devices.

  • In this study, we received each wood plastic composites (WPC) from three manufacturers. These WPCs were evaluated regarding their physical and mechanical properties of both before and after accelerated weathering by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The total time of exposure of the WPCs to UV irradiation was 1800 h. The water absorption, volumetric swelling and shrinkage of WPCs did not affected by UV irradiation. Among the mechanical properties, there was no significant differences in bending strength and screw withdrawal resistance of UV treated WPCs compared with those of reference WPCs. However, surface hardness of WPCs showed decrease under UV irradiation. Stereoscopic microscopy observation revealed deterioration of the surface layer polymer in all weathered WPCs by UV. Exposure of the WPCs to UV irradiation caused decomposition and disappearance of the polymer layer. From this result, we can estimate that damage of polymer by UV led to a decrease in the surface hardness of the WPCs. The wood flours retained original shape after accelerated weathering by UV irradiation.

  • Zirconia nanoparticles were widely used as filler in order to get high refractive index layer. However, dispersion of nanoparticles is difficult due to their agglomeration in solvent. In this study, the dispersibility of the zirconia suspension is promoted by controlling the steric hindrance and electrostatic interactions through the adsorption of PEI according to alkali treatment time. Also, to induce improved dispersibility on suspension, we changed the dispersion conditions variously and fabricated an ink formulation method for the coating layer. Zirconia suspension was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), Zeta potential measurement, Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and FT-IR. We were able to confirm that good dispersion of zirconia suspension by alkali treatment and PEI led to high refractive index.

  • Several methods have been used to synthesize polymer-clay nanocomposites. In-situ polymerization with clay belongs to a classical way to develop nano-structured materials, while melt intercalation is being recognized as another useful approach due to its versatility and environmentally benign character. In this research, we prepared polymer-clay nanocomposites based on the poly (methyl methacrylate) and organically modified montmorillonite via two-stage sonication process. According to the unique mode of power ultrasonic wave, the sonication during processing led to enhanced breakup of the clay agglomerates and reduction in size of the dispersed phase. Optimum conditions to form stable exfoliated nanocomposites were studied for various compositions and conditions. It was found that a novel attempt carried out in this study yielded further improvement in the mechanical performance of the nanocomposites compared to those produced by the conventional melt mixing process, as revealed by DMA, XRD and TEM. And rheological properties of nanocomposites were measured by ARES. As a result, sonicated PMMA-clay nanocomposites exhibits enhanced properties such as storage modulus and thermal stability than that of neat PMMA.

  • Hole transporting polymer(poly[N-(p-diphenylamine)phenylmethacrylamide], PDPMA) was doped with nile red dye at various concentrations to study the influence of doping on the energy transfer during light emitting processes. Organic LEDs composed of ITO/blend(PDPMA -nile red)/ Alq$_3$/Al as well as thin films of blend(PDPMA -nile red)/ Alq$_3$ were manufactured for investigating photoluminescence, electroluminescence, and current-voltage characteristics. Atomic Force Microscopy was also used to observe surface morphology of the blend films. It was found that such doping. significantly influences the efficiency of the energy transfer from the Alq$_3$ layer to blended layer and the optical/electrical properties could be optimized by choosing the right concentration of the dye molecule. The results also showed a interesting correlation with the morphological aspect, i.e. the optimum luminescence at the concentration with the least surface roughness. When the concentration of nile red was 0.8 wt%, the maximum energy transfer could be achieved.
