러빙한 Polyvinylcinnamate 필름 위에 종착된 Pentacene 분자의 배향 (Orientation of Evaporated Pentacene Molecules on Rubbed Polyvinylcinnamate Film)

  • 러빙한 고분자 필름이 액정 분자와 증착된 분자의 배향을 유도하는 메커니즘을 이해하고자 $\pi$ 전자들의 공액구조가 주사슬과 곁사슬에 각각 있는 polyimide와 polyyinylcinnamate를 사용하여 필름과 LC 셀을 만들어 편광 UV/Vis 분광실험으로 조사하였다. 러빙한 필름 내에 형성되는 이방성, LC 셀의 액정 방향자, 그리고 종착된 pentacene의 배열방향을 측정하여, 액정배향은 microgroove 영향보다는 분자간 상호작용에 의하여 우선적으로 유도되는 반면에 pentacene 증착의 경우에는 러빙에 의하여 형성된 필름 표면의 microgroove 영향으로 배향이 유도되는 것을 알 수 있었다.

  • Nano-floating gate memory (NFGM) devices were fabricated by using the low temperature poly-Si thin films crystallized by ELA and the $In_2O_3$ nano-particles embedded in polyimide layers as charge storage. Memory effect due to the charging effects of $In_2O_3$ nano-particles in polyimide layer was observed from the TFT NFGM. The post-annealing in 3% diluted hydrogen $(H_2/N_2)$ ambient improved the retention characteristics of $In_2O_3$ nano-particles embedded poly-Si TFT NFGM by reducing the interfacial states as well as grain boundary trapping states.

Polymer Layer Effects on Anchoring Strength and Surface Ordering in NLC, 5CB, by the Washing Process after Rubbing on the Polyimide Surfaces

  • The liquid crystal (LC) aligning capabilities by the washing processes after rubbing on the two kinds of the rubbed polyimide (PI) surface were studied. The polar anchoring energy of 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) increased with the rubbing strength RS on the two kinds of the rubbed PI surface. The polar anchoring energy of 5CB on the rubbed PI surface with alkyl side chains is larger than the rubbed PI surface with CONH moiety. Also, the surface ordering of 5CB on the rubbed PI surface with alkyl side chains is larger than the rubbed PI surface with CONH moiety. Therefore, the surface ordering of 5CB strongly depends on the polymers and washing process.

  • The capacitance-temperature (C-T) measurement technique is proposed in the present work to investigate the thermal stability of organic and polymeric thin films for organic electroluminescent display (OELD). The single layer devices with the individual materials were subjected to the C-T measurement, prior to the examination of the complete OELD. The single layer devices with the small molecules destroyed below $180\;^{\circ}C$ depending on the kinds of materials. However, the device with the hole-transporting polyimide did not show any relaxation up to $200\;^{\circ}C$. The small molecule based OELDs failed to emit light after annealing, whereas that with the hole-transporting polyimide worked well in spite of large reduction in intensity.

Liquid crystal alignment on rubbed self-assembled monolayers with fluorinated alkyl chain

  • In this paper, we investigated the vertical alignment characteristics of liquid crystals (LCs) on fluorinated self-assembled monolayers (FSAMs). For comparison, a commercialized homeotropic polyimide (PI) layer was used as an LC alignment layer. We confirmed the successful deposition of FSAMs and the change of FSAMs before and after rubbing treatment through contact angle measurement and atomic force microscopy. The optical transmittance spectrum of the FSAMs is similar to that of the homeotropic PI layer, which is a superior optical characteristic applicable to LC devices. When FSAMs were applied to the vertically aligned (VA) LC cell, uniform and vertical LC alignments were achieved. In addition, the voltage-transmittance characteristic of VA LC cell with FSAMs was superior to that of VA LC cell with the conventional homeotropic PI layers. These results indicate that the FSAMs are suitable as the homeotropic LC alignment layer for enhanced LC devices.

  • 기존 liquid crystal display(LCD) 공정에서 Indium Tin Oxide(ITO) 투명전극과 폴리이미드 배향막의 러빙 공정은 액정을 정렬하고 전계를 인가하기 위하여 필수적인 공정이다. 하지만 ITO의 증착은 높은 진공을 요구하며, 러빙 공정은 정전기에 의해 소자가 손상될 수 있는 단점이 존재한다. 본 논문에서는 기존 ITO 투명전극을 대체하기 위하여 PEDOT:PSS와 Multi-wall carbon nanotube(MWNT)를 혼합하여 PEDOT:PSS 나노복합체를 제조하고, 러빙 공정을 대체하기 위하여 나노 주름 구조 몰드를 통한 나노임프린팅을 통하여 박막을 형성함으로써 기존 액정 디스플레이의 투명전극과 배향막 두 가지 박막을 PEDOT:PSS/MWNT 나노복합체 박막 하나만으로 기능하게 하여 공정을 단순화 하였다. 전사된 나노 주름을 따라 액정이 잘 배향됨을 확인하였으며, 이를 기반으로 만들어진 액정 셀에서 박막 내 MWNT의 함량이 높아질수록 박막의 전기전도도가 증가하여 낮은 구동 전압과 빠른 응답 속도를 갖는다는 것을 확인하였다. 본 연구를 통해 공정 단순화와 용액공정에 의한 공정 단가 절감, 기존 러빙 공정의 단점을 해결하는데 기여 할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

Polarization-dependence of liquid crystal alignment on an organic surface with ion beam irradiation

  • We used Brewster's Law to examine the mechanism of liquid crystal (LC) alignment on an organic insulation layer when subjected to ion-beam irradiation. Brewster's Law implies that the maximum rate polarized ray on a slanted insulation layers on the substrate and it illustrates the dependence of polarization and themechanical structure on the ion beam irradiation process. The pretilt angle of nematic LCs on the organic insulation surface was about $1.13^{\circ}$ for an ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ for 1 minute at 1800eV. This shows the dependence of LC alignment on the polarization ratio in a slanted organic insulation layer.

Solution-Derived Hafnium Lanthanum Oxide Films Prepared Using Ion-Beam Irradiation and Their Applications as Alignment Layers for Twisted-Nematic Liquid Crystal Displays

  • We present the alignment characteristics of LC (liquid crystal) molecules on solution-derived HLO (hafnium lanthanum oxide) films fabricated using IB (ion-beam) irradiation. We then demonstrated that LC molecules can be homogeneously and uniformly aligned on the HLO film irradiated at an IB incident energy of 1.2 keV. Physicochemical analysis methods such as atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to verify the LC alignment mechanism on the IB-irradiated HLO film. In addition, the electro-optical performance of a TN (twisted-nematic) cell fabricated using the IB-irradiated HLO film exhibited characteristics superior to those of the conventional TN cell fabricated using a rubbed polyimide layer.

  • 1. 서론 : 공기중의 산소분리용 고분자막은 높은 선택도를 동시에 요구한다. 이 두가지 조건을 만족시키는 소재 개발과 기존의 고분자물질을 수식하는 연구가 진행되고 있다. 고분자막에 대한 수식방법으로는 UV처리, plasma처리등이 있으나, 이들 방법은 선택도는 증가시키나 투과도를 감소시키는 경향이 있다. 기체의 투과저항을 줄이기 위하여 다공성 지지체 위에 박막을 입힌 복합막과 박막의 skin layer와 sub-layer를 갖는 비대칭막은 투과저항을 줄일수 있으나 선택도는 고분자 고유의 80%정도까지 감소되는 것으로 알려졌다. 본 연구의 목적은 고분자 복합막의 투과분리특성을 향상시키기 위한 것으로 지지층의 세공과 표면에 실리카/고분자를 충전, 피복시켜 투과분리특성을 조사하였다. 현재까지의 연구는 낮은 투과계수와 높은 선택도를 갖는 고분자물질이 사용되었으나, 본 연구에서는 폴리이미드로는 폴리이미드 중에서 투과계수가 가장 높다고 알려진 6FDA-p-TeMPD[{(3,3',4,4'-dicarboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropanedianhydride}-{2,3,5,6-Tetra-methyl-1,4-phenylenediamine}] 폴리이미드를 택하였으며 다공성지지체는 aluminum oxide를 사용하였다 . 본 실험에서는 선택도와 투과속도에 주로 영향을 미치는 폴리이미드와 실리카의 양에 대하여 고찰하였다.

Effect of the Hydrophobicity of Hybrid Gate Dielectrics on a ZnO Thin Film Transistor

  • Zinc oxide (ZnO) bottom-contact thin-film transistors (TFTs) were prepared by the use of injector type atomic layer deposition. Two hybrid gate oxide systems of different polarity polymers with silicon oxide were examined with the aim of improving the properties of the transistors. The mobility and threshold voltage of a ZnO TFT with a poly(4-dimethylsilyl styrene) (Si-PS)/silicon oxide hybrid gate dielectric had values of 0.41 $cm^2/Vs$ and 24.4 V, and for polyimide/silicon oxide these values were 0.41 $cm^2/Vs$ and 24.4 V, respectively. The good hysteresis property was obtained with the dielectric of hydrophobicity. The solid output saturation behavior of ZnO TFTs was demonstrated with a $10^6$ on-off ratio.
