  • Since the subpanels of polygonal-section shell have the corners of an obtuse angle larger than 90 degree unlike general plate or box-section structures, this could have an influence on forming nodal lines against local plate buckling or stress distributions. However, there is not sufficient material in the relevant study results or design recommendations. The very feasible models of the initial imperfections were acquired through the literature studies and then the parametric studies were conducted along with the initial imperfection models by using the finite element method. The parameters like the size of residual stresses, the portion of compressive residual stresses, and steel grades were considered. From the parametric studies, it was found that the maximum residual stress is more influential factor than the distribution pattern of residual stresses. In addition, The design strength equations for the simply supported plates can be applicable to the determination of the local buckling strength of the polygonal cross-section shell structures.

  • In this paper, new three-dimensional vibration data for the solid cylinders of the N-sided polygonal cross-section with V-notches or sharp cracks are presented, and a Ritz procedure is employed, which incorporates a mathematically complete set of algebraic-trigonometric polynomials in conjunction with an admissible set of edge functions that explicitly model the tri-axial stress singularities that exist along a terminus edge of the V-notch. Convergence studies demonstrate the necessity of adding the edge functions to achieve the accurate frequencies and mode shapes of N-sided polygonal cylindrical solids with stress singularities.

  • In this paper, a numerical procedure is proposed for achieving the minimum cost design of reinforced concrete polygonal column cross-sections under compression and biaxial bending. A methodology is developed to integrate the metaheuristic algorithm Quantum Particle Swarm Optimization (QPSO) with an algorithm for the evaluation of the strength of reinforced concrete cross-sections under combined axial load and biaxial bending, according to the design criteria of Brazilian Standard ABNT NBR 6118:2014. The objective function formulation takes into account the costs of concrete, reinforcement, and formwork. The cross-section dimensions, the number and diameter of rebar and the concrete strength are taken as discrete design variables. This methodology is applied to polygonal cross-sections, such as rectangular sections, rectangular hollow sections, and L-shaped cross-sections. To evaluate the efficiency of the methodology, the optimal solutions obtained were compared to results reported by other authors using conventional methods or alternative optimization techniques. An additional study investigates the effect on final costs for an alternative parametrization of rebar positioning on the cross-section. The proposed optimization method proved to be efficient in the search for optimal solutions, presenting consistent results that confirm the importance of using optimization techniques in the design of reinforced concrete structures.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the mechanical performances of polygonal concrete-filled circular steel tubular (CFT) stub columns under axial loading through combined experimental and numerical study. A total of 32 specimens were designed to investigate the effect of the concrete strength and steel ratio on the compressive behavior of polygonal CFT stub columns. The ultimate bearing capacity, ductility and confinement effect were analyzed based on the experimental results and the failure modes were discussed in detail. Besides, ABAQUS was adopted to establish the three dimensional FE model. The composite action between the core concrete and steel tube was further discussed and clarified. It was found that the behavior of CFT stub column changes with the change of the cross-section, and the change is continuous. Finally, based on both experimental and numerical results, a unified formula was developed to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of polygonal CFT stub columns according to the superposition principle with rational simplification. The predicted results showed satisfactory agreement with both experimental and FE results.

  • Transmission electron microscopic study including single particle electron diffraction and morphological observation using replica and thin section was carried out for the Sancheong halloysite. Halloysite tube generally consists of inner circular and outer polygonal leaves. Primary triangular or concave voids are found between inner and outer leaves. Crosssection of halloysite tubes whose diameters are smaller than 500${\AA}$ are generally circular, whereas those larger than 500${\AA}$ are polygonal. Electron diffraction pattern of thick polygonal halloysite tube shows that it has a 2-layer monoclinic structure as suggested by previous workers.

  • This paper presents an algorithm for the evaluation of stresses in reinforced concrete sections under service loads. The algorithm is applicable to any section defined by polygonal contours and is based on an analytical integration of the stresses. The nonlinear behaviour of concrete is represented by the parabola-rectangle law used in the Eurocode-2 for the ultimate concrete design. An integrated definition of the strains in concrete and steel is possible by the use of Heaviside functions, similarly to what is done for ultimate section design in Barros et al. (2004). Other constitutive equations for the definition of the stresses in the concrete or steel can be easily incorporated into the code. The examples presented consist in the evaluation of resulting axial load and bending moment in an irregular section and in a section in L shape. The results, for service stresses, can also be plotted in terms of design abacus; a rectangular doubly reinforced section is presented as example.

  • Acoustic Target Strength (TS) is a major parameter of the active sonar equation, which indicates the ratio of the radiated intensity from the source to the re-radiated intensity by a target. In developing a TS equation, it is assumed that the radiated pressure is known and the re-radiated intensity is unknown. This research provides a TS equation for polygonal plates, which is applicable to near field acoustics. In this research, Helmholtz-Kirchhoff formula is used as the primary equation for solving the re-radiated pressure field; the primary equation contains a surface (double) integral representation. The double integral representation can be reduced to a closed form, which involves only a line (single) integral representation of the boundary of the surface area by applying Stoke's theorem. Use of such line integral representations can reduce the cost of numerical calculation. Also Kirchhoff approximation is used to solve the surface values such as pressure and particle velocity. Finally, a generalized definition of Sonar Cross Section (SCS) that is applicable to near field is suggested. The TS equation for polygonal plates in near field is developed using the three prescribed statements; the redection to line integral representation, Kirchhoff approximation and a generalized definition of SCS. The equation developed in this research is applicable to near field, and therefore, no approximations are allowed except the Kirchhoff approximation. However, examinations with various types of models for reliability show that the equation has good performance in its applications. To analyze a general shape of model, a submarine type model was selected and successfully analyzed.

  • This paper examined the uniaxial compressive strength of longitudinally-stiffened octangular modular section towers. Through a series of comparative studies, the 3-dimensional finite element analysis results were considerably larger than the nominal strength values based on Eurocode. Therefore, the design strength equations are simply applicable to the design of the octangular-section tower module, but a more rational method will be needed to properly predict the capacity.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop a simplified method that could predict the strength of concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns applicable to high strength material under combined axial compression and flexure. The simplified method for determining the strength of CFT columns is based on the interaction curve of the section approached by a polygonal connection of the points. These points are determined by using symmetrical properties of the CFT section. For each point, a simple equation is proposed to determine the strength of the slender columns under compression and flexure. The simple equation was adjusted with results of elasto-plastic analysis results. Validation of the simplified method is undertaken by comparison with data from the test conducted at Kyushu University. These results confirm the fact that the simplified method could accurately and reliably predict the strength of CFT columns under combined axial compression and flexure.
