Structure and Properties of Cation Exchange Membrane made of Sulfonated Polyethersulfone

  • In this work a new process was developed for the sulfonation of the chemicallly stable engineering polymer polyethersulfone as membrane materials for electrodialysis or a flow battery applications. Commercially available polyethersulfone polymer was partially sulfonated using a CSA sulfonating agent in a dichloromethane solvent, which sulfonated polyethersulfone with various sulfonation levels have been prepared. Sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) membranes with different ion capacities were prepared for the purpose of identifying cation exchange membrane properties, in an attempt to find a low cost replacement for Nafion, which most of the perfluorinated membranes, known to exhibit a prolonged service life, are expensive and difficult to process. The following features were determined: the degree of sulfonation, water uptake, thermal analysis, and electrochemical properties such as ion exchange capacities, resistivity, selectivity of ion permeation. The surface of the cation exchange membranes, decomposed with the H202-treatment, were observed by using scanning electron microscope. The area resistivities of SPES mebranes in 5N-NaOH decreased from $2,150{\;}{\Omega}-cm2$ to less than $15{\Omega}-cm2$ as the ion exchange capacity (IEC) increased from 0.62 to 1.73 millieequivlants per dry gram(meq/dg).eq/dg).

  • 기존에 membrane의 소재로 사용되어 왔던 Polyethersulfone은 막 제조 특성이 우수하고 여러 가지 환경에 대한 저항성이 뛰어나서 많이 이용되어 왔지만 소수성을 띠므로 농도분극과 fouling등 많은 문제점을 안고 있다. 이런 문제점을 극복하기 위하여 친수성의 도입, 물리적, 화학적 세척등 여러 가지 방법을 사용하고 있고 본 연구에서는 hydrophobic Polyethersulfone에 hydrophilic Sulfonate group(-SO$_3$H)을 도입하여 이와같은 문제를 극복하고자 했다. 본 연구에서 사용한 sulfonating agent로는 Chlorosulfonic acid (in CCl$_4$)를 사용하였다.

Preparation and Characteristics of Polyethersulfone Microfiltration Membranes (폴리에테르술폰 정밀여과막의 제조 및 특성 연구)

  • This is the research about a new method to make the internal separation layer with smallest pore size in polyethersulfone (PES) membrane by adding p-toluenesulfonic acid (TSA) and polyvinylpyrolidone (PVP) to polymeric PES solution. The preparation and morphological characterization of PES sheet membranes containing PVP as a hydrophilic swelling material and TSA as a demixing material were performed. As a result by microflow porometery, the PVP and TSA added PES membranes showed good permeabilities and narrow pore size distributions, comparable to those of the commercial membranes. The concentration of PVP affected the PES characteristics on air permeability and surface structure. The concentration of TSA influenced on pore size distribution but do not affect air permeability. The surface images of FE-SEM shows similar pore size when TSA added or not. However, the cross-section images of FE-SEM show that the TSA added PES membranes have a increase of internal layer thickness with smallest pore size.

Preparation and Characterization of Mixed Matrix Membrane Consisting of Polyethersulfone and ZnO Nanoparticles (Polyethersulfone과 ZnO 나노입자로 조성된 혼합기질막의 제조와 특성 평가)

  • In this research, a new expectation in enhancing the PES (polyethersulfone) polymer phase inversion membrane performances with nanoparticles is proposed by using ZnO. This paper investigated the synthesis of PES phase inversion membranes including ZnO nanoparticles and evaluates the performance of these mixed matrix membranes. The PES-ZnO mixed matrix membranes were fabricated by phase inversion method using the PES-ZnO-NMP(N-methyl-1-pyrrolidone) casting solutions with low ZnO nanoparticles content of 0.375 wt%. The influence of ZnO nanoparticles on the characteristics of PES-ZnO mixed matrix membranes was investigated with scanning electron microscope observations of membrane cross-sections, contact angle measurements, tensile strength measurements, pure water flux measurements and ultrafiltration experiments of BSA solution. Those results showed that the performance advancements in comparison with the pure PES membrane without ZnO in terms of increasing hydrophilicity as well as reducing membrane fouling by adding ZnO nanoparticles even in low concentration.

Rejection Behavior of 2-MIB and Geosmin Using Polyethersulfone Nanofiltration Membrane and Surface Hydrophilicity Effect Using $TiO_2$ Particles (2-MIB와 Geosmin의 Polyethersulfone 나노 분리막 배제율 거동 및 $TiO_2$ 적용 표면 친수화 효과 관찰)

  • In this study, rejection behavior of 2-MIB (methylisoborneal) and geosmin which are known as taste-and-odor (T & O) causing micropollutants in drinking water source was investigated using hydrophobic polyethersulfone (PES) nanofiltration "loose" membrane (MWCO : 400 Da). It was found that the rejection of the geosmin was higher than that of the 2-MIB in all experimental conditions tested. This study also showed that the rejections of 2-MIB and geosmin were increased by increasing solution pH due to enhancing electrostatic repulsions between micropollutants and membrane surface. The presence of natural organic matter led to increase the rejection of the hydrophobic 2-MIB and geosmin and the effectiveness was more pronounced at higher solution pH. Increasing hydrophilicity of the hydrophobic membrane surface by coating with $TiO_2$ particles resulted in the significant increase in the rejection of 2-MIB and geosmin. In addition to the charge repulsion, this result suggests that hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction should be one of main rejection mechanisms of T & O compounds by NF membrane.

Properties of AZO/Ag/AZO Multilayer Thin Film Deposited on Polyethersulfone Substrate

  • The AZO/Ag/AZO multilayer films were deposited on polyethersulfone (PES) substrate by using facing target sputtering methods at room temperature. The AZO/Ag/AZO multilayer films with polymer substrate had advantages, such as low sheet resistance, high optical transmittance in visible range and stable mechanical properties. From the results, the AZO/Ag/AZO multilayer films (50/12/50 nm) demonstrated a sheet resistance of 11 ${\Omega}/{\square}$ and average transmittance of 87% in visible range (wavelength of 380-770 nm). Moreover, the multilayer showed stable mechanical properties compared to the single-layered AZO sample during the bending test due to the existence of the ductile Ag metal layer.

  • 1. 서론 : 이온교환막이란 합성 폴리머의 이온교환수지를 막상으로 만든 것으로 고분자 매트릭스에 특정 전하가 고정되어 있어 이러한 성질 때문에 보통의 격막에서는 볼 수 없는 특징을 가지고 있으며 바닷물의 농축에 의한 소금의 제조, 탈염에 의한 공업용수 및 음료수의 제조, 도금공장의 폐수처리, 식품과 의약품공업, 고체 고분자 전해질에 근거한 수소생성 등에서 폭넓게 이용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 상용막에 대체가능한 이온교환막을 제조하기 위하여 내열성, 내약품성, 내산성과 우수한 기계적성질 등을 가지고 있어 membrane 소재로 널리 사용되는 polyethersulfone(PES)를 술폰화시켜 sulfonated PES를 합성한 후 양이온 교환막을 제조하여 특성을 분석하였다.

  • Polyethersulfone(PES)은 열적 특성이 우수하고 넓은 pH 범위에서 사용이 가능하며 특히, 막 제조 특성이 우수하여 막 소재로서 지금까지 널리 사용되어 오고 있다. Polysulfone(PSf)에 비하여 구조적으로 친수성이 우수하고 열적 특성이 더 뛰어난 장점이 있지만, 친수화를 시키기가 어려워서 지금까지는 주로 PSf의 친수화 연구로 한정되었었다. PES가 PSf에 비해 친수성이 좋다고는 하지만 PES 자체가 여전히 소수성을 띠므로 막 운전시 막의 내부나 표면에 투과 물질이 흡착되어 일어나는 Fouling으로 인해 막의 수명을 단축시키며 운전 효율도 크게 떨어진다. 이러한 Fouling을 줄이기 위한 방법으로 여러 가지 방법이 있지만 본 연구에서는 막의 재질을 친수성으로 개질시켜서 Fouling억제를 시도하였다.
