  • Sustainable and eco-friendly polymers, natural polymers, bio-based polymers, and degradable polyesters, are of growing interest because of environmental concerns associated with waste plastics and emissions of carbon dioxide from preparation of petroleum-based polymers. Degradable polymers, poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC), and poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), are related to reduction of carbon dioxide in processing. To improve a weak mechanical property of a degradable polymer, a blending method is widely used. This study was forced on the component separation of degradable polymer blends for effective recycling. The melt-mixed blend films in a specific solvent were separated by two layers. Each layer was analysed by FT-IR, DSC, and contact angle measurements. The results showed that each component in the PPC/PLLA and PPC/PBAT blends was successfully separated by a solvent.

  • Biodegradable poly (I ,4-butanediol succinate) (PBS) was synthesized from 1,4-butanediol and succinic anhydride. The glass transition temperature of poly (I, 4-butanediol succinate) was revealed at $73^{\circ}C$. The crystallization and cold crystallization of the polymers were investigated as a function of holding time in melt state, cooling rate. reheating, and molecular weight. Chain scission and/or cmsslinking did not occur in the melt state at var.ious holding times. Slower scanning rate can allow more times for nucleation, rearrangement, and packing of the polymer chain, so the onset temperature of crystallization from the melt was increased. PBS crystallized from the melt was found to have spherulitic structure. The degradation behavior of PBS was studied under basic conditions and with microorganisms using the modified ASTM method. In the basic solution. PBS lost up to 85% of its mass within two days. Based upon visual observation, the crystalline structure of films composed of larger molecular weight polymers retained their crystallinity longer than similar structures in low molecular weight samples.

난연도료용 트리포스포러스 함유 변성폴리에스테르의 합성 (Synthesis of Modified Polyesters Containing Triphosphorus for Flame-Retardant Coatings)

  • Three phosphorus functional groups were introduced in one structural unit of polymer backbone to enhance the flame retardancy of PU coatings. In the first step, we synthesized tetramethylene bis(orthophosphate) (TBOP) that contained two phosphorus functional groups in one structural unit. In the next step, we synthesized modified polyesters (ATBTP-10C, -20C, -30C) that contained triphosphorus group using TBOP, 1,4-butanediol, trimethylolpropane, adipic acid, and another functional monomer, phenylphosphonic acid (PPA). The amount of PPA in ATBTPs was adjusted from 10 wt% to 30 wt%. The structure and characteristics of ATBTPs were examined using FT-IR, NMR, GPC, and TGA analysis. From the thermo-behavior test of diphosphorus modified polyester (ATBT) and ATBTPs, the afterglow of ATBT, ATBTP-10C, ATBTP-20C, and ATBTP-30C were 24.7, 27.1, 29.0, and 31.7%, respectively. It was found from this result that the afterglow increased with the amount of PPA component.

Synthesis and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Novel Y-Type Polyesters with Enhanced Thermal Stability of Second Harmonic Generation

  • 2,3-Di-(2'-hydroxyethoxy)-4'-nitrostilbene (3) was prepared and condensed with terephthaloyl chloride, adipoyl chloride, and sebacoyl chloride to yield novel Y-type polyesters (4-6) containing the NLO-chromophores 2,3-dioxynitrostilbenyl groups, which constituted parts of the polymer backbones. Polymers 4-6 were soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. Polymers 4-5 showed thermal stability up to $300^{\circ}C$ in thermogravimetric analysis with glass transition temperatures $(T_g)$, obtained from differential scanning calorimetry, in the range $81-95^{\circ}C$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients $(d_{33})$ of the poled polymer films at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength were around $3.68{\times}10^{-9}$ esu. The dipole alignment exhibited high thermal stability up to $T_g$, and there was no SHG decay below $T_g$ due to the partial main-chain character of the polymer structure.

폴리에스테르아미드의 친수성과 생분해성 (Hydrophilicity and Biodegradability of Polyesteramides)

  • In this research of biodegradable polymers, it is essential to investigate the relation between biodegradability and molecular structure such as chemical constitution, hydrophilicity, molecular weight, crystallinity, chain orientation, and so on. It is also expected that hydrophilicity of polymer can affect biodegradability because biodegradation occurs with the help of enzymes and microorganisms. This study is to investigate the effect of hydrophilicity on biodegradability of polyesters. Hydrophilicity was varied by adding 5~30 mol% of amide groups, since amide groups are hydrophilic and used for improving thermal and mechanical properties. Surface energies and nitrogen contents by ESCA were measured to determine their hydrophilicity. The biodegradation was examined in activated sludge, enzyme and natural soil by $CO_2$evolution, TOC, weight loss, and observation through microscopy. The results showed that hydrophilicity of polyesteramide films increased with the addition of amide, PBAD series of shorter methylene units showed maximum hydrophilicity at 15~20 mol% of amide contents, but PBSE exhibited maximum values at 5~15 mol% of amide contents. The biodegradability increased as the hydrophilicty on surface increased. The biodegradation rate of PBAD series was higher than that of PBSE series. Therefore, it can be concluded that the addition of appropriate contents of hydrophile enhanced the biodegradability of aliphatic polyesters as well as their physical properties. Also, the experimental results revealed the relation between hydrophilicity and biodegradability of polyesteramides.

트리클로로 방향족 변성폴리에스테르를 함유한 폴리우레탄 난연도료의 합성과 난연최적화 (Synthesis and Flame - Retardant Optimization of Polyurethane Coatings Containing Trichloro Aromatic Modified Polyesters)

  • Two-component polyurethane flame-retardant coatings were prepared by blending trichloro aromatic modified polyesters(TCMPs) and polyisocyanate. TCMPs were synthesized by polycondensation of trichlorobenzoic acid(TCBA), a flame-retardant component, with adipic acid, 1,4-butanediol, and trimethylolpropane. The content of TCBA was varied in 10, 20, and 30 wt% for the reaction. These new flame-retardant coatings showed various properties comparable to other non-flame-retardant coatings. Moreover, we carried out the combustion test and the flammability test for our flame-retardant coatings. The results of vertical burning test for the coatings containing more than 20 wt% of TCBA were determined as 'no burn'. The results of flammability test for the coatings with 20 wt% and 30 wt% of TCBA contents indicated the limiting oxygen index(LOI) values of 25% and 28% respectively, which implied relatively good flame retardancy.

Synthesis of Novel Y-type Nonlinear Optical Polyesters with Enhanced Thermal Stability of Dipole Alignment

  • 2,4-Di-(2'-hydroxyethoxy)benzylidenemalononitrile (3) was prepared and polymerized with terephthaloyl chloride and adipoyl chloride to yield novel Y-type polyesters 4 and 5 containing dioxybenzylidenemalononitrile groups as NLO-chromophores, which constituted parts of the polymer backbone. The resulting polymers 4 and 5 are soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. Polymers 4 and 5 showed thermal stability up to 300 ${^{\circ}C}$ in thermogravimetric analysis with glass-transition temperatures obtained from differential scanning calorimetry in the range 83-94 ${^{\circ}C}$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients ($d_{33}$) of poled polymer films at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength were around $6.48\;{\times}\;10^{-9}$ esu. The dipole alignment exhibited high thermal stability even at 10 ${^{\circ}C}$ higher than $T_g$ and no significant SHG decay was observed below 105 ${^{\circ}C}$ partially due to the main-chain character of polymer structure, which is acceptable for NLO device applications.

고전압에 적용 가능한 대전방지 코팅제용 바인더의 합성에 관한 연구 (Study on the Synthesis of the Binder for Antistatic Coating Applicable under High Voltage)

  • 고전압 하에서도 표면 저항을 유지할 수 있는 대전방지 보호필름용 코팅액의 바인더에 관하여 연구하였다. 구체적으로는 폴리에틸렌 글리콜(PEG)과 폴리프로필렌 글리콜(PPG)을 주성분으로 하는 다양한 조성의 폴리에스터계 바인더를 합성하여 전도성 고분자와의 배합을 통하여 필름을 제조한 후에 고전압 하에서의 표면 저항의 변화를 조사하였다. PEG와 PPG의 조성과 상관없이 10 V의 전압 하에서는 $10^7{\sim}10^8{\Omega}/{\square}$의 범위를 나타내었으나, 1000 V 하에서는 표면저항이 $2{\times}10^{10}{\Omega}/{\square}$ 이상으로 변화하여 대전방지 용도로는 사용할 수 없었다. 그러나 PPG의 10 mol%를 1,4-butandiol(BD)로 대체하여 합성한 폴리에스터 중에서 PEG 함량이 25 mol%인 바인더([PEG]/[PPG]/[BD] = 25.0/67.5/7.5)에서는 1000 V 하에서도 $2.8{\times}10^9{\Omega}/{\square}$을 나타내, 고전압 하에서도 대전방지용으로 사용할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이결과는 BD의 소수성에 의하여 고전압 하에서도 표면 저항이 유지될 수 있다는 것을 시사하고 있다.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa P-5 균주로부터 3-Hydroxyvalerate와 Medium-chain-length 3-hydroxyalkanoates로 구성된 공중합체의 생합성 (Biosynthesis of Copolyesters Consisting of 3-Hydroxyvalerate and Medium-chain-length 3-hydroxyalkanoates by the Pseudomonas aeruginosa P-5 Strain)

  • 활성슬러지로부터 특이한 조성의 polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs)를 생합성하는 Pseudomonas aeruginosa P-5를 분리하였다. 이 균주는 nonanoic acid나 heptanoic acid와 같은 홀수개의 탄소수를 가지는 지방산을 단일 탄소원으로 공급해주었을 경우, 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV)와 medium-chain-length (MCL) 3-hydroxyalkanoates 단위체로 이루어진 공중합체를 생산하였다. 공중합체 내 3HV의 함량은 valeric acid와 같은 보조기질을 공급함으로써 증가시킬 수 있었으며, 2 g/L nonanoic acid와 1 g/L valeric acid로 이루어진 혼합기질로부터 3HV의 함량이 26 mol%에 달하는 공중합체를 얻을 수 있었다. 이러한 공중합체는 결정성이 매우 낮아 점착성 고분자로서의 성질을 보였다. P. aeruginosa P-5 균주는 MCL-PHA synthase 유전자(phaC1, phaC2)를 가지고 있는 반면에 SCL-PHA synthase 유전자는 결여되어 있는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 P. aeruginosa P-5 균주의 MCL-PHA synthase는 MCL(R)-3-hydroxyacyl-CoAs 뿐만 아니라 (R)-3-hydroxyvaleryl-CoA를 기질로 인지하는 특이한 기질특이성을 갖는 것으로 사료된다.

오메가 3 지방산을 함유한 Sucrose Ester의 합성 (The Base Catalyzed Synthesis of Sucrose Ester Containing Omega-3 Fatty Acids)

  • 고급불포화지방산인 docosahexaenoic acid ethylester (DHAEE)와 sucrose를 transesterification반응을 하여 sucrose ester를 기질 및 촉매의 비율, 반응시간, 용매사용 및 기압 등을 달리하여 합성하고, 합성율을 살펴보았고, 특히, 섭취 시 인체 내에서 이용 가능한 DHA를 함유하고 있으며, hydrophilic한 유화제로써 sucrose fatty acid mono ester의 합성율을 높이는 합성조건을 연구하였다. 무용매 상태에서의 sucrose ester의 합성율이 낮았기 때문에 반응용매로써 dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO)를 사용하여 몰비율과 반응시간에 따른 합성을 실시하였다. 여러 반응조건 중 DHAEE의 전환율(%)은 sucrose:DHAEE의 몰비율이 1:0.98, 1:0.60, 1:0.40, 1:0.20인 SE#4, SE#5, SE#6, SE#7에서 모두 96% 이상을 나타내었다. 특히, SE#6(1:0.4 mole)에서 반응시간에 따른 전환율과 sucrose ester의 조성변화를 살펴본 결과, 반응시간 1시간일 때 55.3%의 전환율(mono ester 91.6%)을 보였고, 이후 반응 3.5시간일 때에는 97.1%(mono ester 66%)의 전환율을 보였다. 따라서 반응초기에 대부분의 sucrose ester가 합성되며, 특히 반응시간이 길어짐에 따라 mono ester에서 di-, tri- 및 polyester로 그 조성이 점차 변화됨을 확인하였고, 기질 중 DHAEE의 비율이 증가할수록 sucrose mono ester의 생성은 감소한 반면에, sucrose di-, tri- 및 polyester의 생성은 증가함을 확인하였다. 연구된 합성조건 중 sucrose mono ester의 합성은 1:0.2(sucrose:DHAEE)의 몰비율로 2.5시간동안 반응(SE#7)하였을 때 98.5%의 높은 전환율을 보이면서 그 조성은 87.3%로 가장 높게 합성되었다.
