  • In general, the presence of non-selective intercrystalline (grain boundary) defects in polycrystalline metal-organic framework (MOF) or zeolite membranes, which are known to be ca. 1 nm in size, causes lower membrane performance (selectivity) than the intrinsically expected. In this study we show that applying a thin polymeric coating of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) on a polycrystalline MOF membrane is effective to cap the non-selective intercrystalline defects and therefore improve membrane performance. To demonstrate the concept, first, polycrystalline UiO-66, one of Zr-based MOFs, membranes were prepared by an in-situ solvothermal growth. By controlling membrane growth condition with respect to growth temperature, we were able to obtain polycrystalline UiO-66 membranes at 150 ℃ with intercrystalline defects of which the quantity is not significant, so it can be plugged by the suggested PDMS deposition. Second, their performances were compared before and after the PDMS deposition. As expected, the PDMS deposition ended up with a noticeable increase in CO2/N2 ideal selectivity from 6 to 14, indicating successful intercrystalline defect plugging. However, the enhancement in CO2/N2 selectivity was accompanied by a significant reduction in CO2 permeance from 5700 to 33 GPU because the PDMS deposition not only plugs defects but also forms a continuous coating on membrane surface, adding an additional transport resistance.

  • In this study, a polymer/graphene hybrid composite was prepared by a simple roll-method and a simple sensor was produced by a convenient surface engineering procedure. The sensor performance was examined and the effect of graphene content on the sensing behavior was monitored. A polymer (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) paste containing graphene powder was prepared by a three-roll apparatus and polymer/graphene hybrid composite was produced by a two-roll technique. The sensing medium, cyclodextrin (CD) was introduced by a convenient bio-conjugation method. The efficacy of surface modification was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy and the ohmic relation was observed on composite surfaces. An analyte (e.g., methyl paraben, MePRB) at a 10 nM concnetration could be detected. When the graphene loading was low, the sensor performance was relatively poor. This was attributed to the absence of graphene alignments, which were observed for the composites having a high graphene loading. This indicates that the sensor performance was influenced by physical alignments of the filler. This article can provide important information for future research on developing sensing devices.

  • Demand for a low-cost, high-throughput, and high-resolution patterning method for fabricating devices continues to increase. The roll-to-roll (R2R) imprint lithography technique has received a great deal of attention as a means of fabricating next-generation devices. In this paper, we propose a fabrication method for polymeric planar lightwave circuit (PLC) devices that uses R2R imprint lithography. The proposed technique uses an elastomeric polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mold. A Si wafer with micro patterns is used as the Si master. The PDMS mold is then replicated from the Si master. By applying a precise web tension and at a given web speed, we fabricated a micro-patterned PLC device. The insertion losses were 4.0 dB for a $1{\times}2$ optical splitter. As such, the proposed method of fabricating a PLC device by the R2R process was shown to be an effective solution.

  • We investigated the feasibility of parylene F usage as an intermediate layer between a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate and an Au thin-film interconnect as well as the swelling effect of PDMS substrate on the stretchable deformability of an Au thin film. The 150-nm-thick Au film, which was sputtered on a PDMS substrate without a parylene F layer, exhibited an initial resistance of $11.7{\Omega}$ and an overflow of its resistance at a tensile strain of 12.5%. On the other hand, the Au film, which was formed with a 150-nm-thick parylene F layer, revealed an much improved resistance characteristics: $1.21{\Omega}$ as its initial resistance and $246{\Omega}$ at its 30% elongation state. With swelling of PDMS substrate, the resistance of an Au film substantially decreased to $14.4{\Omega}$ at 30% tensile strain.

  • In many drinking water treatment plants, chlorination process is one of the main techniques used for the disinfection of water. This disinfecting treatment leads to the formation of haloacetic acid (HAAs). In this study, headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) was studied as a possible alternative to liquid-liquid extraction for the analysis of HAAs in drinking water. The method involves direct derivatization of the acids to their methyl esters without methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) extraction, followed by HS-SPME with a $2cm-50/30{\mu}m$ divinylbenzene/carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane fiber. The effects of experimental parameters such as selection of SPME fiber, the volume of sulphuric acid and methanol, derivatization temperature and time, the addition of salts, extraction temperature and time, and desorption time on the analysis were investigated. Analytical parameters such as linearity, repeatability and limit of detection were also evaluated. The $2cm-50/30{\mu}m$-divinylbenzene/carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane fiber, sulphuric acid of 1ml, methanol of 3ml, derivatization temperature of $50^{\circ}C$ derivatization time of 2hrs, sodium chloride salt of 10g, extraction time of 30 minutes, extraction temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ and desorption time of 1 minute at $260^{\circ}C$ were selected as the optimal experimental conditions for the analysis of HAAs. The linearities ($r^2$), relative standard deviations (%RSD) and limits of detection (LOD) for HAAs were 0.9978~0.9991, 1.1~9.8% and $0.05{\sim}0.2{\mu}g/l$, respectively.

  • A polymeric arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) has been proposed and demonstrated by exploiting the nanoimprint method. A PDMS(polydimethylsiloxane) stamp with device patterns engraved was developed out of a master mold made of quartz glass. The device was fabricated by transferring the pattern in the PDMS stamp to a spin-coated polymer film without using any etching process. The device had 8 output channels, while the center wavelengths of each output channel were positioned from 1543.7 nm to 1548.3 nm with the spacing of 0.8 nm. The achieved average channel crosstalk and the 3-dB bandwidth were about 10 dB and 0.8 nm respectively.

  • In order to lower the surface energy of unsaturated polyester(UPE) resin, small amount of siloxane-ester copolymers were incorporated. The copolymers were synthesized by a condensation polymerization using ethylene glycol and hydroxy termintated polydimethylsiloxane as diols and maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride as dibasic acids. The modified UPE resin surface was characterized by dynamic contact angle (DCA), peel strength measurements of pressure sensitive adhesives and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(ESCA). As the copolymer content in the blend and PDMS content in the copolymer are increased, both advancing and receding contact angles against water are increased. The strength required to peel-off the pressure sensitive adhesive tape from the modified UPE resin decreased dramatically with the addition of the copolymer. ESCA results indicated that polydimethylsiloxane segments are predominated at the outer surface of the modified UPE resin.
