  • The formation of dioxin (term used here to refer to both polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, PCDDS, and dibenzofurans, PCBFs) in combustion processes is of concern because of the extreme toxicities of some of these compounds and because of their resistance to degradation in the environment. The number and location of chlorine substituents differentiate dioxin homologues and isomers, respectively. There are a total of 75 PCDD congeners and 135 PCDF congeners.(omitted)

  • There are among the most relevant toxic emissions from incinerators such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Induction of cytochrome P4501A1 catalyzed 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase(EROD) activity in mammalian cell culture(EROD bioassay) is thought to be a selective and sensitive parameter used for the quantification of dioxin-like components. In this study, the toxic emissions from several school waste incinerators were evaluated by determination of CYPIA catalytic activity and cytotoxicity using cell culture microbioassay. The incinerator residue and soil samples were collected from the schools located in Kyunggi province from April to June 1999. The samples were extracted in a Soxhlet apparatus using toluene for 20 hours. In order to clean-up, concentrated crude extracts were applied to basic alumina column. The EROD activities of extracts in the H4IIE cells were from 1.91$\pm$0.32 ng-TEQ/g to 24.54$\pm$3.48 ng-TEQ/g of biochemical-TEQ value. In soil samples, CYP1A catalytic activity was 0.09~0.64 ng-TEQ/g. EROD bioassay, seems to be a useful short-term bioassay when information about the biological response of complex environmental samples is needed. Although further study is needed, these results indicate that the potent toxic emissions are produced from school waste semi-incinerators.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the congeners of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins(PCDDS) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans(PCDFs) in Korean foods among children in Korea, in comparison with the findings in their mothers. The PCDDs and PCDFs intakes of 24-h diet duplicates were estimated from the previous Korean reports. In Korean children and their mothers of this study, major sources of lipid intake were plant-based foods(62% for children, 66% for their mothers). The women took 34% of lipid from animal sources, among which meats were leading sources of animal lipids(30%). Fish and shellfish were accounted for 4% in total lipid intake. Daily intake of PCDDs and PCDFs in the children md their mothers were 0.002-3.188 and 0.002-2.717 pg WHO-TEQ/day in animal sources and ND-0.283 and ND-0.296 pg WHO-TEQ/day in plant sources, respectively. PCDDs/PCDFs intake from animal origin was the major exposure source for both children and their mothers in Korea. Among the 17 PCDD/Fs congeners, 2,3,4,7,8-pentachlorodibenzofuran was assumed to be the effective exposure marker for diet intake.

  • PCDDS and PCDFs are very stable chcmicals and have very long residence times in the environment and in organisms, including humans. Their hydrophobicity promotes accumulation in sediments and organisms, resulting in high concentrations in both sediments and organisms. Among toxicological effects reports arc teratogenicity, reduce reproduction, liver toxicity, decreased growth rate and behavioral changes (Zeise et al., 1990; Huff, 1992). PCDDs/DFs are inadvertently produced from various combustion sources and manufacturing processes, such as municipal solid waste incineration (Olie et at., 1977), motor vehicles (Marklund et al., 1987), steel mills (Tysklind et al., 1989), and chemical production processes (Hutzinger et al., 1985). • The analytical methods of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) for water sample with extremely low concentration was developed to extract large volume and to improve fast chromatography for clean up. Semi-automated solid phase extraction (SPE) system and column coupling chromatography using elution pump was optimized and applied to each processes of treatment plant. Results of disk type SPE indicated that this system was applicable below 40 L of aqueous sample with a flow rate of 0.08 ~ 0.2 L/min. Average recoveries of SPE using labeled sampling spike of $^{37}Cl$-2,3,7,8-TCDD was 97%. Column coupling method resulted in reduced clean up time, solvent volume, increased average recoveries with constant elution rate. The combined methods were applied to the monitoring of drinking water treatment plant. Limits of detection (LOD) of each process were calculated. For example, LOD of raw and treated water ranged 0.094~0.968 pg/L and 0.028~0.364 pg/L, respectively. Combined methods of extraction and cleanup techniques provided fast analysis of PCDD/Fs with high accuracy and low LODs for water samples.

  • Degradation efficiency of pentachlorophenol (PCP) by using direct UV photolysis and $TiO_2$ photocatalysis was evaluated with both chemical analyses and acute toxicity assessment employing luminescent bacteria Vibrio fischeri. PCP was chosen as a target compound in this study because of its wide application as fungicide, bactericide, insecticide and wood preservative in agriculture and many industries, in addition to its well-known environmental consequences. The acute toxicity to the microbe was reduced by >60% when applying UV alone, and was completely removed when treated with $UV-TiO_2$ combinations. Toxicity reduction pattern determined with the Microtox Assay generally corresponds with the chemistry data: However, it should be noted that toxicity was greater than expected by the chemistry data. Formation of TCBQ, a toxic byprodut, could not explain observed microbial toxicity. These observations are probably due to the presence of unidentified toxic PCP byproducts, which may include polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans. When Microtox results were compared between different exposure time, i.e.,5 min and 15 min, an interesting pattern was noted with $UVA-\;TiO_2$ treatment. While no microbial toxicity was observed with 5 min exposure, an EC50 value of 45.4% was estimated with 15 min exposure, which was not observed in $UVB-\;TiO_2$ exposure. This result may suggest the presence of unidentified toxic degradation products generated in the later stage of treatment. Based on this study, $TiO_2$ photocatalyst, together with UVB photolysis could improve the removal of both PCP and its toxic derivatives in more efficient way. The Microtox Assay is promising and economical method for monitoring efficiency of wastewater treatment processes.
