The present study describes an analytical method for the determination of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) in biota samples by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). PBBs are extracted twice from 20 g samples with mixture solvent 40mL acetone and 80mL hexane using ultrasonic agitation for 20 min. Lipids in extracts are degraded by concentrated sulfuric acid and then PBBs are purified with Florisil column. The purified extracts are analyzed by GC/MS-selected ion monitoring mode for the quantitation of PBBs in biota sample. The overall recovery yields of PBBs range between 77 and 111% under these experimental conditions.
The extraction methods of PBBs from environmental samples by soxhlet extraction for solid phase and liquid-liquid extraction for liquid phase were compared. After extraction, silicagel and florisil as column clean up methods were used for the comparison of cleanup efficiency with different solvent system. Also, the analytical instruments were used GC/MSD. The 22 kinds of PBBs standards were used to establish the analytical methods to perform the experiments of recoveries and detection limits in water and soil. The detection limits of PBBs represented 5~10 ng/L for water and 0.5~3.5 ng/g for soil samples, respectively. The recoveries of water samples represented 96~107% in n-hexane, dichloromethane and toluene for water, and 60~80% in combined solvent with n-hexane and acetone. The recoveries of soil sample were surveyed 67~97% in soxhlet extraction and 64~76% in ultrasonic extraction with selected solvents.
As a basic research for development of the domestic portable XRF spectrometer, we discussed the analytical results of bench-top and portable XRF methods for RoHS materials of the Cd, Pb, Hg, Cr(IV), polybrominated biphenyls(PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ehters(PBDE). The instrumental parameters such as measurement time of bench-top and portable XRF were optimized using certified reference materials of polyethylene and polypropylene with 5 hazardous materials of 0~1,200 mg/kg. The quantitative analysis of total-Cr, total-Br, Cd, Hg and Pb in certified reference materials and plastic samples were compared by empirical method, fundamental parameter method of bench-top XRF and portable XRF.

European Union Member States shall ensure that, from 1 July 2006, new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market does not contain mercury, cadmium, lead, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls(PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDE) (by Directive 2002/95/EC of The European Parliament and the Council of 27 january, 2003 on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment ). So, It is important to develop lead free solder and to assure the reliability of appliance. But lead free solder(i.e. Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu) have some problems such as lift off, whisker, migration and crack, etc. In this paper we discuss the reliability assurance method in lead free solder and appliance.
The environmental problem is a main subject of the 21C and an environment destruction phenomenon by various kinds of environmental materials is reaching serious level. Nations to be classified as the environmental developed country, are born again environmental rich country. And they earn a large income by trade Every kind environmental resource in an international commercial transaction. Especially, the study that a reliability assessment method to prevent to reliability problem to be happened when the solder lead(lead-free solder), non-cd component, non-bromide component(without the polybrominated biphenyls(PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDE))and hexavalent chromium(Cr VI) clearance component and mercury-free applied to electronic equipment is progressed. As the result of the study for applying of a reliability assessment technique of lead-free solder that recognized the most of urgent problem at the company, combination accelerated life test could taken by adding and appling the part of a humidity acceleration part to Eyring Model which is proposed by R.E.Thomas. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a group of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), which are used in a variety of consumer products. Several of those are produced in large quantities. Their chemical structure similarities to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), as well as their toxicity, has been studied. PBDEs are persistent and lipophilic, which results in their bioaccumulation in the fatty tissues of organisms and enrichment throughout food chains. In addition, a number of studies also reported high levels of PBDEs in animals and food resulting from the use of contaminated animal feed Public concern about PBDEs levels in animals and food has been raised. Feed contamination by toxic chemicals has been the cause of the contamination of poultry products. The purpose of this study was to evaluate PBDEs in pig feed to search the origin chase of POPs in pigs. Feed samples were obtained wheat from East Europe, corn from South America and America, soybean meal from Korea, America, South America and India and tallow from Korea. The preparation of samples was based on the EPA method 1614. Instrumental analysis was based on the use of high resolution gas chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS). Quantification was carried out by the isotopic dilution method. The analysis of ${\Sigma}PBDEs$ involved 22 PBDE congeners, including BDE-17, 28, 47, 49, 66, 71, 77, 85, 99, 100, 119, 126, 138, 153, 154, 156, 183, 184, 190, 191, 196 and 197.
Polychlorinated biphenyls(PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were measured in pine needles of Seoul, and Ansung(GyeongGi-do) to investigate composition, source, and regional concentration of PBDEs. Concentration of total PCBs in Seoul and Ansung showed 608, 945 pg/g DW (mean: 777 pg/g DW), respectively, also concentration of total PBDEs(pg/g DW) in Seoul and Ansung showed 7944, 14,255 pg/g DW(mean 11,100 pg/g DW). Tetrachlorinated biphenyls(Tetra-CBs) and Decabromodiphenyl ethers (Deca-BDE) were detected in relatively high concentration compared to other PBDE congeners in Seoul and Ansung. Correlation coefficients(r) of between PCB congeners in pine needles detected of Seoul and Ansung were significant (r=0.85, p<0.01). It suggested that PCBs concentration in pine needles may originate from secondary sources such as air-plant partition. The similarity of between PBDE congeners profile to those of the technical mixture formulation (Bromkal 70-5DE) suggests a source of this product in these sites.
Bivalve samples from 30 locations Korean coastal waters were analyzed to characterize the contamination with and distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). The congeners of PBDE in 30 bivalve samples were analyzed by high resolution gas chromatography with a high resolution mass detector. The levels of PBDEs in bivalve samples ranged from 0.092 to 13.5 ng/g wet weight. These values for PBDEs concentrations in bivalves from Korea were higher than or comparable to available values for bivalves from other countries. In the congener profiles, BDE-47 (mean contribution=42.2%) was predominant, followed by BDE-99 (23.1%), BDE-100 (11.9%) and BDE-154 (3.5%). Among the OCs analyzed, $\Sigma$PCBs and $\Sigma$DDTs levels were highest, followed by $\Sigma$HCHs, $\Sigma$CHLs and HCB. The wet weight based $\Sigma$PCBs and $\Sigma$DDTs ranged from 0.28 ng/g to 19.4 ng/g, and from 0.19 ng/g to 4.86 ng/g, respectively. The $\Sigma$PCBs and $\Sigma$DDT slevels in bivalves along the entire Korean coast were lower than those of the USA, and below the Food and Drug Administration (USA. FDA) limits for fish and shell fish. However, the human health criteria and wild life criteria of the USA. Environmental Protection Agency (USA. EPA) were exceeded for DDE and $\Sigma$HCHs at most of the sampling points.
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a class of "brominated" (bromine containing) man-made chemicals used as flame retardant additives in plastics, foams, and textiles. PBDEs are found in various environmental contaminants in air, soil, sediment, and water, and 209 individual forms (congeners) of PBDE exist. Among these, 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) is the dominant congener found in the environment. Exposure to BDE-47 is now worldwide, and levels of BDE-47 have been detected in the blood of animals, including humans. BDE-47 can adversely affect the developmental system in both humans and animals. BDEs have structural similarities to polychlorinated biphenyls and thyroid hormones. However, recent studies have shown that BDEs may act as hormonal disrupting chemicals with detrimental effects. Therefore, a reliable assessment of BDE-47 toxicological action is required to understand the detrimental impacts of BDE-47 on human health. In this review, we overview recent studies on the distribution and potential toxicological effects of BDE-47 in humans and animals.
