  • Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/montmorillonite (MMT) clay nanocomposite microspheres with a core/shell structure have been developed via a suspension polymerization approach. In order to prepare the PVAc/ MMT and PVAc/PVA/MMT nanocomposite microspheres, which are promising precursor of PVA/MMT nanocomposite microspheres, suspension polymerization of vinyl acetate with organophilic MMT and heterogeneous saponification were conducted. A quaternary ammonium salt, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, was mixed with the MMT in the monomer phase prior to the suspension polymerization. The rate of conversion decreased with an increase in MMT concentration. The incorporation of MMT into the PVAc was verified by FT-IR spectroscopy. Organic vinyl acetate monomers were intercalated into the interlayer regions of organophilic clay hosts and followed by suspension polymerization. Partially saponified PVA/MMT nanocomposite microspheres with a core/shell structure were successfully prepared by heterogeneous saponification.

  • A previous paper was reported in being sensetized photopolymer, poly(vinyl cinnamoyl acetate) (PVCiA)1) with some squarylium dyes such as 1,3-bis(4 or 6-trifluouomethy1-1,3,3-trimethylindo) squarylium dyes(TFSQ). Here, we synthesized new 1,3-bis(4 or 6-nitro-1,3,3-trimethylindo) squarylium dyes(NISQ) to sensetize photopolymer, such as poly(vinyl cinnamoyl acetate). Absorption's coefficient of (NISQ8) is 8.5x105, the sensitivity of PVCiA added with NISQ8(3%) was highly sensitized 8 times than not added, and 2 times than TFSQ8(3%). Maybe, high absorption'scoefficient and red shift of NISQs with strongly withdrawing group to TFSQs afford to the high sensitivity of PVCiA.

  • The effects of protective colloids on the colloid stability of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) latex was investigated. The stability of PVAc latex in reactive poly(vinyl alcohol) mono thiol (PVALT) (DP=1080) having 78.4% saponification value was better than poly (vinyl alcohol)(PVA) (DP=1100) having 81.6% saponification value. The colloidal stability of PVAc latex particles improved drastically with increase of the reactive PVALT. The particle surface morphology of PVAc latex was examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was shown that particle size of 1ha latexes decreased with increasing reactive PVALT concentration. Therefore, the stabilities of latex for reactive PVALT protective colloid was superior to that of PVA ones. This result is due to the introduction of many thiol groups that induce chemical bonds at PVAc latexes surface, so that the formation of PVALT-b-PVAc block copolymer via the reaction of PVAc with reactive PVALT. In addition, zeta potential of the PVAc latexes decreased with increasing sodium carbonate concentration.

  • Vinyl acetate/alkyl acrylate copolymers were prepared by water-born emulsion copolymerization according to the compositional change of vinyl acetate and various alkyl acrylates such as methyl acrylate (MA), ethyl acrylate (EA), and n-butyl acrylate (BA). Ammonium persulfate (APS) was used as an initiator and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was used as a protective colloid. The significant result was described as follows. The activation energy determined by an isothermal analysis in the temperature region between $100{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ of the copolymer had the order of PVAc/PMA > PVAc/PEA > PVAc/PBA. The peel strengths before and after the plasma treatment were the order of PVAc/PMA > PVAc/PEA > PVAc/PBA.

  • An automated reaction calorimeter was used to directly monitor the rate of emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAs) having different degrees of blockiness. By using this technique in conjunction with other off-line measurements of the evolution of particle size distributions, important details of the process were observed. No constant graft rate period was observed for both low and high initial monomer-water ratios. The gel effect was observed for the low monomer-water ratio recipe. The particle size distributions were broad (particle diameter 40~100 nm) and bimodal. Continuous nucleation was observed to be accompanied by 'limited aggregation' and flocculation during the particle growth stages. It was speculated to be due to the occurrence of the extensive 'limited aggregation' and chain transfer to PVA leading to grafting.

  • Some photopolymer, poly(vinyl cinnamoyl acetate)(PVCiA) was synthesized by esterification of polymer(vinyl alcohol(PVA) with monochloroacetic acid, followed by reaction poly(vinyl monochloroacetate)(PVChA) and potassium cinnamate. When esterification of PVA with monochloroacetic acid was reacted in the dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO), in the synthesis of PVChA, it is very good yield and the successive cinnamoyl acetoxyl esterification of PVCiA can be successfully synthesized. But PVCiA is low photosensitive polymer if not added photosensitizing dyes. Here, we synthesized photosensitizing dyes. trifluoromethylindol squarylium dye derivatives(TFSQ). Indolization of 3-trifluoromethylphenyl-hydrazine formed 4- and 6-substituted indoles, the rate of 4- and 6-substituted indoles is close to unity. Absorption's coefficient of 1,3-bis(4-trifluoromethyl-1,3,3-trimethylindol) squarylium dye(TFSQ) is 7.57$\times$10\ulcorner, PVCiA added with TFSQ(3%) was highly sensitized six times than not added.

  • Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) prepared by emulsion polymerization has broad applications for additive such as paint binder, adhesive for wood and paper due to its low glass transition temperature which help to plasticize substrate resins. Since emulsion polymerization has a disadvantage that surfactant and ionic initiator degrade properties of the product polymer, poly (vinyl acetate-eo-ethyl acrylate) (VAc-EA) was synthesized using potassium persulfate as catalyst and polyvinylalcohol (PVA) as protective colloid to prevent the degradation. The copolymer latex product was internally plasticized and has enhanced adhesion, water resistance during VAc-EA emulsion polymerization. No coagulation and complete conversion occur with the reactant mixture of 10 mmol/L potassium persulfate, 10 mmol/L poly ( vinyl alcohol) (PVA 17). As the concentrations of PVA increase, the viscosity becomes increase.
