  • PURPOSE. This study evaluated the adhesion to acrylic resin specimens and biofilm formation capability of Candida albicans strains isolated from HIV positive subjects' oral rinse solutions. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The material tested was a heat-cured acrylic resin (Acron Duo). Using the adhesion and crystal violet assays, 14 oral Candida albicans isolated from HIV-positive subjects and 2 references Candida strains (C. albicans ATCC 90028 and C. albicans ATCC 90128) were compared for their biofilm production and adhesion properties to acrylic surfaces in vitro. RESULTS. There were no significant differences in adhesion (P=.52) and biofilm formation assays (P=.42) by statistical analysis with Mann-Whitney test. CONCLUSION. Denture stomatitis and increased prevalence of candidal carriage in HIV infected patients is unlikely to be related to the biofilm formation and adhesion abilities of C. albicans to acrylic resin materials.

  • The surface properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were investigated after accelerated weathering. Glossinesses, contact angles, surface free energies, thermal stability, and mechanical properties were investigated. The glossiness of the weathered PMMA was decreased with increasing exposure time. Contact angles and surface free energies were not overtly changed because the amount of oxygen on the surface was remained. PMMA was compounded with anti-block and antistatic agents using a co-rotating twin screw extruder to improve the durability. The PMMA composites showed better glossinesses after accelerated weathering while maintaining the contact angles, surface energy, thermal stability, and mechanical properties without significant changes.

  • Molecular conformations of stereoregular poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) monolayers have been investigated by scanning probe microscopes. Isotactic and syndiotactic PMMAs were found to have right and left hand helical structures, respectively. On the contrary atactic PMMA showed rather random arrangement of the chains. It has been demonstrated that the PMMA Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films can be utilized to form nanoscale patterns down to 50 nm and to forma geodesic lens. It has also been manifested that the quantum efficiency of a polymer electroluminescent device can be significantly enhanced by inserting the PMMA LB films between the emitting layer and the cathode. All the applications utilize the unique characteristics of the LB films to form thin and uniform films in the molecular level.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotube-poly methyl methacrylate (MWNT/PMMA) nanocomposite has been prepared by in situ polymerization of MMA dispersed with MWNTs. The MWNTs were functionalized by nitric acid and sulfuric acid treatment, and this was confirmed by FTIR spectrometer. The solution mixture of MWNTs and MMA was partially polymerized at $80^{\circ}C$, followed by the addition of AIBN and polymerization at $50^{\circ}C$. The MWNT-PMMA composite was prepared by casting the pre-polymer on the glass plate, and the optical properties have been studied using UV-vis spectrometer. The acid treated MWNTs were well dispersed in MMA with fairly good dispersion stability, while flocculation and sedimentation was observed from raw MWNTs in MMA.

  • The demand for high-aspect-ratio structures has been increasing in the field of semiconductors and other applications. Here, we present the commercially available negative-tone SU-8 as a potential resist that can be used for direct patterning of high-aspect-ratio structures at the submicron scale and the nanoscale. Such resist patterns can be used as polymeric molds to create high-aspect-ratio metallic submicron and nanoscale structures by using electroplating. Compared with poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), we found that the negative tone resist required an exposure dose that was less than that of PMMA of equal thickness by a factor of 100-150. Patterning of up to 4:1 aspect ratio SU-8 structures with a minimum feature size of 500 nm was demonstrated. In addition, nanoimprint lithography was studied to further extend the aspect ratio to realize a minimum feature size of less than 10 nm with an extremely high aspect ratio in the negative resist.

  • The fabrication of micro-scale irregular holes by using PMMA (Poly Methyl Methacrylate) beads in the front dielectric layer was proposed to improve luminous efficacy of an ac plasma display panel. Through the firing process of front dielectric layer, bowl shaped holes with a depth of $2.5{\mu}m$, a top diameter of $8-12{\mu}m$, and a bottom diameter of $4-7{\mu}m$ were fabricated. The proposed ac plasma display panel with the irregular micro-scale holes improved the luminous efficacy by 18 % due to the decrease in the minimum sustain voltage.

  • In this paper, we verified the failure mechanism of the discolored masking tape wrapped around the wire and studied an improved case study as well. Masking tapes are poly(Vinylchloride-co-Methyl methacrylate) (PVC) and the wire connecting with indoor/outdoor components of the air conditioner is chloroprene(CR). The masking tape under. the ultraviolet ray was accelerated to discolor fivefold. The results determined reveal the discoloration of masking tapes as an elution of the additives, dephenyl Amine series antioxidants, in the connecting wire. When changed dephenyl Amine series to phenol series, we found that the degree of discoloration was dramatically decreased. Due to stink of Thiourea and Thiuram monosulfide, as accelerators in CR wire, we controlled the vulcanization temperature and time without using these accelerators and could get the wire not to smell bad with the equal mechanical properties.

  • We studied experimentally and theoretically the vertical range of the confined electric field in the gap area of metamaterials, which was analyzed for various gap widths using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. We measured the resonant frequency as a function of the thickness of poly(methyl methacrylate) in the range 0 to 3.2 μm to quantify the effective detection volumes. We found that the effective vertical range of the metamaterial is determined by the size of the gap width. The vertical range was found to decrease as the gap width of the metamaterial decreases, whereas the sensitivity is enhanced as the gap width decreases due to the highly concentrated electric field. Our experimental findings are in good agreement with the finite-difference time-domain simulation results. Finally, a numerical expression was obtained for the vertical range as a function of the gap width. This expression is expected to be very useful for optimizing the sensing efficiency.

  • PMMA(poly-methyl methacrylate) microlens array is fabricated using transparent acrylic resin. PMMA is commonly used material for plastic lens due to its excellent visibility larger than 90% and other optical characteristics so much close to those of glass. Orthodontic resin (DENTSPLY International Inc.), commonly used in dentistry, is an transparent acrylic resin kit including MMA liquid and polymerization powder. Their mixture results in PMMA through polymerization. Using the resin PMMA layer is formed on the substrate through spin-coating. Designed pattern of lens structure is transferred to PMMA layer by RIE (Reactive Ion Etching) with oxygen plasma. Final lens shape is formed by thermal treatment that causes PMMA to reflow, The thickness of PMMA spun on the substrate is $17{\mu}m$ that is also final sag of microlens, Designed diameters of the microlenses are $200{\mu}m$, $300{\mu}m$,and $500{\mu}m$, respectively.
