Block Copolymer Thin Films: Nanotemplates for New Functional Nanomaterials

  • In this study, the applications of the block copolymer thin films are introduced. For this purpose, we first obtained cylindrical nanodomains in polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) copolymer perpendicularly oriented to a substrate. Then, nanoporous templates were prepared after removing the PMMA nanodomains by UV treatment. By using electropolymerization, high density nanowire arrays of conducting polymer of poly(pyrrole) and poly( 3-hexyl thiopene) were obtained and their electric properties were measured. Also, these nanoporous thin films were found to be very useful for the separation of human Rhinovirus type 14 (HRV 14), major pathogen of a common cold in humans, from the buffer solution.

Fabrication of Conducting Polymer Nanowires using Block Copolymer Nano-porous Templates for Photovoltaic Device

  • Block copolymers with well-defined nanoscopic structures have recently gained much attention for their potential uses as functional nanostructures. Here, we show that nanoporous templates made from polystyrene-block-poly (methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) satisfy a novel design concept. At first, arrays of nanoscopic cylindrical microdomains oriented normal to the surface can easily be prepared. Then, we fabricated ultra high density arrays of conducting polymer as poly(pyrrole) (Ppy) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanowires with diameters of $25{\sim}40\;nm$ on the ITO glass by electropolymerization of the monomers inside nanoholes. These high density arrays of conducting polymer nanowires could be used as P-type materials for photovoltaic devices.

  • An alternative strategy to .educe the percolation threshold of carbon black (CB) in polymer blends was investigated using random copolymer ternary blends of polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA), and a styrene-methyl methacrylate random copolymer (SMMA). The target morphology was to selectively locate CB particles in the encapsulating layer of SMMA during melt mixing. The CB used in this study is BP-2000 from Cabot and has a strong selective affinity to PS. Even when the CB was premixed with SMMA, it moves to the PS phase during the melt mixing. However, we also observed the CB particles located at the interface between SMMA and PS phases. Through this study it is found that the interaction between polymers and CB particles is critical for selectively localizing CB particles in multi-component polymer blends. Although appropriate processing condition may retard the movement of CB particles to the polymer phase with affinity, it cannot prevent it completely and locate them to the SMMA phase, which is not thermodynamically favored. To locate CB particles in an encapsulating layer of ternary polymer blends, first of all, polymers forming it should have selective affinity to CB.

대기압 AC 플라즈마를 이용한 PMMA 합성 (PMMA Synthesized Using an Atmospheric AC Plasma)

  • 대기압 플라즈마를 이용한 폴리머 합성은 기존의 합성방법에 비해 간단하고 쉽게 폴리머를 합성할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 대부분의 폴리머는 합성온도가 $150^{\circ}C$ 이하이기 때문에 각 폴리머에 적합한 온도를 제어하는 것이 핵심이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 폴리머 합성온도를 제어하기 위하여 플라즈마 방전전극에 모노머를 직접 주입하지 않고 간접적인 방법을 선택했다. 그리고 모노머는 액체 공급 장치를 이용해 플라즈마의 가스량과 파워를 제어하면서 폴리머를 합성의 조건을 찾았다. AC 플라즈마를 이용해 methyl methacrylate($C_5H_8O_2$) 모노머를 폴리머로 합성했으며, 그 결과는 FTIR, XRD 등으로 분석하고 특성을 평가했다. FTIR의 결과, C-O, C-H, C=O 등의 전형적인 poly methyl methacrylate(PMMA)의 피크를 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 XRD의 관찰결과 C1s 및 O1s의 각 binding energy가 각각 283, 285, 288 eV 및 533 eV 주변에서 확인되었다. 그리고 합성시간에 따라 폴리머의 두께가 비례해서 증가하는 것을 관찰할 수 있었다. 실험결과, AC 플라즈마를 이용한 폴리머합성은 가능한 것으로 확인되었으며 소형화 및 휴대가 가능하기 때문에 식품, 바이오, 의약품, 의료용품 등의 현장포장 등 여러 가지 용도로 활용이 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

Effect of Crosslinking Agents on the Morphology of Polymer Particles Produced by One-Step Seeded Polymerization

  • One-step seeded polymerization was used to prepare $7{\sim}10{\mu}m$ of crosslinked monodisperse spheres with four crosslinking agents using $4.68{\mu}m$ poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) seed particles in aqueous-alcoholic media in the absence of the swelling process. The crosslinking agents used were ethylene glycol dimethacrylate(EGDMA), allyl methacrylate(AMA), 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate(HDDA) and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate(TMPTMA). The effects of the type and concentration of the crosslinking agents on the swelling, pore size, thermal property of the networks and morphology of the particles were studied. The chemical structures and concentrations of the crosslinking agents affected both the swelling ratio and the porosity of the networks. In addition, the chemistry of the reactive vinyl group and chain length of the crosslinking agents affected the stability of the monodisperse particles of the ultimate morphology.

Dynamic analysis of the micropipes reinforced via the carbon dioxide adsorption mechanism based on the mathematical simulation

  • In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of a composite cylindrical beam made of a mechanism of carbon dioxide absorption coated on the tube core are investigated based on the classical beam theory coupled with the modified couple stress theory. The composite tube structures are assumed to be uniform along the tube length, and the energy method regarding the Hamilton principle is utilized for generating the governing equations. A powerful numerical solution, the generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM), is employed to solve the differential equations. The carbon dioxide trapping mechanism is a composite consisting of a polyacrylonitrile substrate and a cross-link polydimethylsiloxane gutter layer. Methacrylate, poly (ethylene glycol), methyl ether methacrylate, and three pedant methacrylates are all taken into account as potential mechanisms for capturing carbon dioxide. The application of the present study is helpful in the design and production of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and the different valuable parameters, such as the length-scale parameter, rate of section change, aspect ratio, etc., are presented in detail.

티올기를 함유하는 킬레이트 수지의 합성 및 특성 (Synthesis and Characterization of Chelating Resins Containing Thiol Croups)

  • 폴리(스티렌-co-디비닐벤젠) 수지 페닐고리의 클로로메틸화를 통해 메틸렌티올기를 도입한 수지 (I), 폴리(스티렌-co-메틸 메타아크릴레이트-co-디비닐벤젠) 공중합체의 페닐고리와 에스터기에 클로로메틸화 반응을 거쳐 각각 메틸렌티올기를 도입하여 중금속 이온들과의 배위결합에 필요한공간개념을 배려한 수지(II) 및 폴리(스티렌-co-디비닐벤젠) 수지의 페닐고리를 클로로설폰화한 후, 소디움하이드로술파이드로 티오설폰산화한 수지 (III) 등 3가지 종류의 티올계 구상형 수지들을 합성하였다. 이어, 이들 킬레이트 수지들에 대한 중금속 이온의 흡착경향을 평가한 결과, 티올기 함유 I형 킬레이트 수지는 Hg$^{2+}$에 대해서만 선택적 흡착성을 보였고, 티올기 함유 II형 킬레이트 수지는 Hg$^{2+}$에 대한 흡착성능이 보다 향상되었으며, Cu$^{2+}$, Pb$^{2+}$, C$d^{2+}$ 및 Cr$^{3+}$ 등의 몇몇 중금속 이온들에 대해서도 약간의 흡착능을 보였다. 다른 한편으로, 친수성의 티오설폰산기 함유 III형 킬레이트 수지는 효율적 흡착체로서 Hg$^{2+}$, Cu$^{2+}$, Ni$^{2+}$, Co$^{2+}$ 및 Cr$^{3+}$ 등의 중금속 이온들은 물론, 특히 C$d^{2+}$ 및 Pb$^{2+}$에 높은 흡착능을 보였다.

New Separators Based on Non-Polyolefin Polymers for Secondary Lithium Batteries

  • New porous separators based on non-polyolefin materials including the blend of poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC)/poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VdF-co-HFP)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and the porous separator based on poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVdF) were prepared by phase inversion method. The porosity and morphology were controlled with phase inversion rate, which is governed by the relative content of non-solvent and solvent in coagulation bath. To enhance tensile strength, the solvent pre-evaporation and uni-axial stretching processes were applied. The ionic conductivity was increased with increasing stretching ratio, and tensile strength was increased with increasing solvent pre-evaporation time and stretching ratio. The 200% stretched PVdF separator showed 56 MPa of tensile strength, and the ionic conductivity of the stretched PVdF separator was $8.6{\times}10^{-4}\;S\;cm^{-1}\;at\;25^{\circ}C$.

The effect of denture base surface pretreatments on bond strengths of two long term resilient liners

  • PURPOSE. Purpose of this study was to evaluate effect of two surface treatments, sandblasting and monomer treatment, on tensile bond strength between two long term resilient liners and poly (methyl methacrylate) denture base resin. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two resilient liners Super-Soft and Molloplast-B were selected. Sixty acrylic resin (Trevalon) specimens with cross sectional area of $10{\times}10$ mm were prepared and divided into two groups of 30 specimens each. Each group was surface treated (n = 10) by sandblasting (250 ${\mu}$ alumina particles), monomer treatment (for 180 sec) and control (no surface treatment). Resilient liners were processed between 2 poly(methyl methacrylate) surfaces, in the dimensions of $10{\times}10{\times}3$ mm. Tensile strength was determined with Instron Universal testing machine, at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min; and the modes of failure (adhesive, cohesive or mixed) were recorded. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey HSD test (${\alpha}$= 0.05). RESULTS. Monomer pretreatment of acrylic resin produced significantly higher bond strengths when compared to sandblasting and control for both resilient liners (P < .001). Sandblasting significantly decreased the bond strength for both the liners when compared to monomer pretreatment and control (P < .001). Mean bond strength of Super-Soft lined specimens was significantly higher than Molloplast-B in various surface treatment groups (P < .05). CONCLUSION. Surface pretreatment of the acrylic resin with monomer prior to resilient liner application is an effective method to increase bond strength between the base and soft liner. Sandblasting, on the contrary, is not recommended as it weakens the bond between the two.

필름 성형법에 의한 PMMA 인조석의 제조 (Preparation of PMMA Marbles by Film Molding Method)

  • 상업적으로 폴리(메틸 메타크릴레이트) (PU) 인조석을 생산하기 위한 두 가지 성형 방법으로 셀 성형법과 벨트 성형법이 있다. 그렇지만 셀 성형법은 생산성 면에서, 벨트 성형법은 설비비 및 생산단가 면에서 각각 단점을 갖고 있다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 플라스틱 필름을 주형으로 이용하여 PMMA 인조석을 생산하는 새로운 성형 가공 방법에 대한 연구를 통해 벨트 성형법 및 셀 성형법의 단점을 극복하고자 하였다. PMMA 인조석의 생산을 위한 주형용 플라스틱 필름으로는 폴리(비닐 아세테이트) 필름을 사용하였다. 우수한 필름 성형 가공성을 나타낼 뿐만 아니라 경화 후 우수한 기계적 특성을 나타낼 수 있는 메틸 메타크릴레이트 배합물을 제조하고 이를 사용하여 필름 성형법에 의해 PMMA 인조석을 제조하였다. 필름 성형법에 의해 제조된 PMMA 인조석의 성능은 셀 성형법과 벨트 성형법에 의해 각각 제조된 상업용 PMMA 인조석의 성능에 비해 동등 이상의 우수한 성능을 나타내었다. 그러므로 본 연구에서 개발된 필름 성형법은 PMMA 인조석의 생산을 위해 상업적으로도 적용 가능성이 큰 것으로 사료된다.
