Microbiological treatment, chlorination, and ozonation are usually used for water treatment. However, there is weakness that these methods can't decompose and eliminate recalcitrant organic pollutants perfectly. It is possible to eliminate recalcitrant organic pollutants when photocatalysis of $TiO_2$ is used. In this study, the removal efficiencies of organic pollutants by using photocatalyst of $TiO_2$ in the slightly polluted golf club water hazard and a river were investigated. The amount of $TiO_2$ was divided into three categories of 1 g/L, 2 g/L and 4 g/L in order to investigate the adequate amount of $TiO_2$ and the removal efficiency. UV light was used as a light source for the reaction of photocatalyst. As a conclusion in this study, the efficiency of turbidity removal was increased in proportion to the amount of $TiO_2$ until 4 hours. After then the turbidity was gradually decreased. Finally, the optimum concentration of $TiO_2$ was 4 g/L. The efficiency of COD removal was increased in proportion to the amount of $TiO_2$ regardless of time.
A macro spreadsheet model, WEANES (Wet Pond Annual Efficiency Simulation Model), has been developed to predict the long-term or annual removal efficiencies of wet retention/detention basins. The model uses historical, site-specific, multi-year, rainfall data, usually available from a nearby National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) climatological station to estimate basin efficiencies which are calculated based on annual mass loads. Other required input parameters are: 1) watershed parameters; drainage area, pervious curve number, directly connected impervious area, and ti me of concentration, 2) pond parameters; control and overflow elevations, pond side slopes, surface areas at control elevation and pond bottom; 3) outlet structure parameters; 4) pollutant event mean concentrations; and 5) pond loss rate which is defined as the net loss due to evaporation, infiltration and water reuse. The model offers default options for parameters such as pollutant event mean concentrations and pond loss rate. The model can serve as a design, planning, and permitting tool for consulting engineers, planners and government regulators.
Phenol, often discharged from petroleum and fine chemical industries is potential carcinogen and was classified into priority pollutant by EPA in USA. It causes serious environmental and health problem if discharged to the environment such as soil or aquifer. The removal efficiency of phenol and COD using Fenton treatment(Hydrogen Peroxide and Ferrous Sulfate) was observed and biodegradability (BOD$_{5}$/COD$_{cr}$) of reaction products were also examined. When 50 mg/l of phenol was treated by Fenton's Reagent(50 mg/l of hydrogen peroxide and 900 mg/l of ferrous sulfate), the removal efficiency of phenol and COD was 100% and 80% respectively in 10 minutes, which suggested this method can be used as actual phenol removal process. The initial biodegradability of 500 mg/l phenol solution was 0.7 but decreased as hydrogen peroxide was increased.
In this study, the effects of starvation on floc characteristics when treating saline wastewater using a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) were investigated. The effectiveness over 5 days of starvation for aerobic and non-aerobic strategies for maintaining the physical characteristics of floc-forming sludge and the recovery period needed to regain the initial pollutant removal efficiency were investigated. Experiment results revealed that the sludge volume index (SVI) increased and the floc size and fractal dimension decreased after starvation under both aerobic and non-aerobic conditions. Sludge settleability deteriorated faster under aerobic conditions compared to non-aerobic conditions. Under non-aerobic conditions, the SBR required less time to return to its initial pollutant removal efficiency and settleability. Floc size, fractal dimension, and SVI were observed to be fairly correlated with each other. The results demonstrated that it was better to maintain the sludge under non-aerobic rather than aerobic starvation, because it adapted to, resisted starvation and had a quicker re-start afterward.
A discharge plasma reactor using a ferroelectric pellet packed bed is now used as a removal means of pollutant gases, such as NOx, SOx and VOCs. When an ac voltage is applied to this plasma reactor, then the pellets are polarized, and great electric fields are formed at each top and bottom contact points of the ferroelectric pellets. Thus the points of each pellet become covered with intense corona discharges, where an electrophysicochemical reaction is taking place strongly However these strong discharges also elevate the temperature of the pellets greatly and concurrently decrease the output ozone generation, as a result, the overall removal efficiency of gas becomes decreased greatly A new configuration of discharge plasma reactor using a ferroelectric pellet layer and a wire-to-wire electrode has been proposed and investigated experimentally. It is found that an intensive microdischarge is taking place on the surface of ac corona-charged ferroelectric pellet layer of the proposed reactor, which concurrently enhances the efficiency of plasma generation greatly And, this type of configuration of plasma reactor utilizing a wire-to-wire electrode and a ferroelectric pellet layer could be used as one of effective plasma reactors to remove pollutant gas.
The composites of alginate, carbon nanotube, and iron(III) oxide were prepared for the removal of heavy metal in aqueous pollutant. Both alginate and carbon nanotube were used as an adsorbent material and iron oxide was introduced for the easy recovery after removal of heavy metal to eliminate the secondary pollution. The morphology of composites was investigated by FE-SEM showing the carbon nanotubes coated with alginate and the iron oxide dispersed in the alginate matrix. The ferromagnetic properties of composites were shown by including iron(III) oxide additive. The copper ion removal was investigated with ICP AES. The copper ion removal efficiency increased greatly over 60% by using alginate-carbon nanotube composites.

Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of a biofilter for eliminating dimethyl sulfide(DMS). A commercial compost/pine bark nugget mixture served as the biofilter material for the experiments. The gas flow rate and DMS concentration entering the filter were varied to study their effect on the biofilter efficiency. The operating parameters, such as the residence time, inlet concentration, pH, water content, and temperature, were all monitored throughout the filter operation. The kinetic dependence of the DMS removal along the column length was also studied to obtain a quantitative description of the DMS elimination. High DMS removal efficiencies(>95%) were obtained using the compost filter material seeded with activated sludge. DMS pollutant loading rates of up to 5.2 and 5.5 g-DMS/m$^3$/hr were effectively handled by the upflow and downflow biofilter columns, respectively. The macrokinetics of the DMS removal were found to be fractional-order diffusion-limited over the 9 to 25 ppm range of inlet concentrations tested. The upflow column had an average macrokinetic coefficient(K$\_$f/) of 0.0789 $\pm$ 0.0178 ppm$\^$$\sfrac{1}{2}$//sec, while the downflow column had an average coefficient of 0.0935 $\pm$ 0.0200 ppm$\^$$\sfrac{1}{2}$//sec. Shorter residence times resulted in a lower mass transfer of the pollutant from the gas phase to the aqueous liquid phase, thereby decreasing the efficiency.
A stream purification system was applied to the upper reaches of the Masan Reservoir to improve the water quality. This system consisted of two channels which were constructed on both sides of the stream, one side packed with crushed gravels and the other with plastic filter media. The system operated under low pollutant concentrations and high hydraulic loadings during a dry season to avoid clogging of the filter media. Removal rate and efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the channel packed with crushed gravel were $14.8g/m^3/d$ and 11.5%, and for the channel with plastic filter media, $50.1g/m^3/d$ and 13.5%, respectively. Removal efficiencies of total phosphorus (T-P) were 6.6% (gravel) and 10.0% (plastic media). These results indicated plastic filter media having relatively high specific surface areas were more efficient than crushed gravels in removing pollutants. However, due to low influent water quality during dry season, the removal efficiencies were low. The proportion of nitrate nitrogen to total nitrogen (T-N) of the inflow was high but, as the system operated under aerobic condition, nitrate nitrogen could not denitrified. Accordingly, total nitrogen was not attenuated with this system. To improve the reservoir water quality effectively, this system should be able to treat the storm runoff containing higher pollutant loadings. When the filter materials are clogged by the storm runoff instead of backwashing, it would be more efficient to replace them, Therefore, the use of natural materials which are light, easily obtaining and replaceable, and have high specific surface areas is recommended.

BACKGROUND: In this review paper, the effects of surface cover (SCV), vegetative filter strip (VFS), and vegetated ridge (VRD) on the pollutant runoff from steep-sloping uplands were analyzed to compare the pollutant reduction efficiency in runoff ($PRE_{runoff}$) of the practices and to investigate how slope and rainfall parameters affect the $PRE_{runoff}$. METHODS AND RESULTS: The $PRE_{runoff}$ of SCV, VFS, and VRD for pollutants including suspended solids and biological oxygen demand was compared by analysis of variance. The effect of slope and rainfall parameters on the $PRE_{runoff}$ was explored by either mean comparison or regression analysis. It was found that the $PRE_{runoff}$ differs with the practices due to different pollutant reduction mechanisms of the practices. Though the $PRE_{runoff}$ was likely to be affected by site condition such as slope and rainfall (amount and intensity), more comprehensive understanding was not possible due to the limited data set. CONCLUSION: The $PRE_{runoff}$ of SCV, VFS, and VRD differed due to the distinctive mechanisms of pollutant removal of the practices. It is necessary to accumulate experimental data across a variety of gradient of slope and rainfall for comprehensive understanding of the effects of the practices on pollutant runoff from steep-sloping uplands.
