대기 편광 측정을 위한 물리량 도출 및 대기 오염 물질과의 상관관계 (Deriving Physical Quantity for Measurement of Atmospheric Polarization and Its Correlation with Air Pollutants)

  • 지구 대기에서의 편광 현상을 촬영하기 위해 태양이 지평선에 걸친 순간 편광필터와 전천 카메라를 이용하여 전천 사진을 촬영하였다. 사진으로부터 편광 현상에서의 편광비와 편광폭을 정의하고 이를 측정하는 방법을 개발하였다. 편광비와 편광폭의 시계열 촬영을 통해 기상 조건에 따라 매일 달라지는 편광 현상을 정량적으로 분석할 수 있게 되었고, 이것이 기상 요소 중 대기 오염 물질과 의미 있는 상관 관계를 보이고 있다는 것을 확인하였다. 대기 편광 현상은 대기 중 대기 오염 물질의 영향을 받는데 오염 물질이 많을수록 편광비는 작아지고 편광폭은 커지는 경향을 보였다. 이는 오염 물질이 광자를 더욱 산란시켜서 편광 현상을 관찰하는 하늘의 넓은 영역으로 퍼지게 하는 효과인 것으로 추측한다.

3D NAND Flash Memory의 Remnant Polarization(Pr)과 Saturated Polarization(Ps)에 따른 Retention 특성 분석 (The Analysis of Retention Characteristic according to Remnant Polarization(Pr) and Saturated Polarization(Ps) in 3D NAND Flash Memory)

  • 본 논문에서는 ferroelectric(HfO2)구조가 적용된 3D NAND flash memory의 parameter에 따른 lateral charge migration의 retention과 Vth를 분석하였다. Ps가 클수록 Program 시 ferroelectric에서 가능한 최대 polarization이 크기 때문에 초기 Vth는 Ps 25µC/cm2 보다 Ps 70µC/cm2에서 약 1.04V차이로 커진다. 또한 Program 이후 trap된 전자는 시간이 지남에 따라서 lateral charge migration이 발생한다. Program 이후 gate에 전압을 가하지 않고 ferroelectric은 polarization을 유지하기 때문에 Ps와 크게 관계없이 Pr이 클수록 polarization이 커지고 lateral charge migration에 의한 ∆Vth는 Pr 5µC/cm2 보다 Pr 50µC/cm2에서 약 1.54V차이로 작아진다.

Using the Crab Nebula as Polarization Angle Calibrator for the Korean VLBI Network

  • The Crab nebula is widely used as a polarization angle calibrator for single-dish radio observations because of its brightness, high degree of linear polarization, and well-known polarization angle over a wide frequency range. However, the Crab nebula cannot be directly used as a polarization angle calibrator for single-dish observations with the Korean VLBI Network (KVN), because the beam size of the telescopes is smaller than the size of the nebula. To determine the polarization angle of the Crab nebula as seen by KVN, we use 3C 286, a compact polarized extragalactic radio source whose polarization angle is well-known, as a reference target. We observed both the Crab nebula and 3C 286 with the KVN from 2017 to 2021 and find that the polarization angles at the total intensity peak of the Crab nebula (equatorial coordinates (J2000) R.A. = 05h34m32.3804s and Dec = 22°00'44.0982'') are 154.2° ± 0.3°, 151.0° ± 0.2°, 150.0° ± 1.0°, and 151.3° ± 1.1° at 22, 43, 86, and 94 GHz, respectively. We also find that the polarization angles at the pulsar position (RA = 05h34m31.971s and Dec = 22°00'52.06'') are 154.4° ±0.4°, 150.7° ±0.4°, and 149.0° ± 1.0° for the KVN at 22, 43, and 86 GHz. At 129 GHz, we suggest to use the values 149.0° ± 1.6° at the total intensity peak and 150.2° ± 2.0° at the pulsar position obtained with the Institute for Radio Astronomy in the Millimeter Range (IRAM) 30-meter Telescope. Based on our study, both positions within the Crab nebula can be used as polarization angle calibrators for the KVN single-dish observations.

2D/3D Convertible Integral Imaging Display Using Point Light Source Array Instrumented by Polarization Selective Scattering Film

  • A two-dimensional (2D) / three-dimensional (3D) convertible display system based on integral imaging is proposed to adopt a novel switchable point light source array, which is implemented using the polarization modulator and the polarization selective scattering film that transmits or scatters the incident light due to its polarization direction. The 2D and the 3D display modes of the proposed system can be modulated by controlling the polarization direction of back light using the polarization modulator. We explain the basic principles of the proposed system and verify the feasibility of the system through preliminary experiments.

Polarization-Independent Multiwavelength-Switchable Filter Based on Polarization Beam Splitter and Fiber Coupler

  • A polarization-independent multiwavelength-switchable fiber filter is proposed based on a polarization beam splitter and fiber coupler, which can function as a polarization-independent transmission or reflection-type interleaving filter. The proposed filter consists of a polarization beam splitter and a Sagnac birefringence loop composed of a 50:50 coupler, high birefringent fibers, and two quarter-wave plates. In the proposed filter, a transmission-type interleaver with a channel isolation > 18 dB or a reflection-type one with a channel isolation of ${\sim}3$ dB, whose channel spacing and switching displacement were 0.8 and 0.4 nm in common, respectively, could be obtained. A channel interleaving operation could be performed by the proper control of waveplates within the Sagnac birefringence loop.

  • In this paper, we have demonstrated absolute wavelength tuning in an optical fiber comb filter based on a polarization-diversity loop configuration by controlling the current injected into enameled wires wound on polarization-maintaining fibers (PMF's), that is, adjusting Joule heat generated from enameled wires. The proposed fiber comb filter consists of a polarization beam splitter, a half-wave plate, a quarter-wave plate, and PMF's. And we observed wavelength change of spectral dips in transmission spectra of the fabricated filter by varying an input current applied to enameled wires. The absolute wavelength of the filter could be controlled in proportional to the square of the input current with good linearity, and the rate of the wavelength shift with respect to the input current was measured as 36.79[nm/$A^2$].

실리카 유리의 전기이완 특성과 비선형적 전기전도도 (Electrical Relaxation in Silica Glasses and Nonlinearity in Electrical Conductivity)

  • The cause of optical nonlinearity induced in thermally poled silica glass is believed to be the space charge polarization. Since the second order optical nonlinearity (electro-optic effect) can be used in optical switches the optical nonlinearity in silica glass has drawn a large attention. Space charge polarization occurs when an ionic conducting material is subjected to dc electric field by the blocking electrode. Thermal poling performed to induce the optical nonlinearity in silica glass is basically identical to the process generating space charge polarization. As a first step to understand the mechanism of space charge polarization in silica glass hence the induced optical nonlinearity the absorption currents as functions of time were measured for various types of silica glasses and analyzed by the theory of space charge polarization. It was found that the electrical relaxation exhibited a step by the space charge polarization in the relatively long time range and dielectric loss peak showed a maximum at a specific temperature which is depending on type of silica glass. It was turned out that this relaxation might be a cause of nonlinearity in electrical conductivity of silica glass.

  • We report on the polarization-insensitive design and fabrication of an arrayed waveguide gratings (AWG's) using sol-gel derived silica glass films formed on fused silica substrates to provide cheap and stable tools for better design. An arrayed-waveguide grating multiplexer with raised structure is fabricated in order to effect polarization sensitivity. Since polarization is usually not known after propagation in an optical fiber. passive WDM components such as monolithic wavelength demultiplexer have to be polarization insensitive. 플라즈마 질화처리한 중, 고탄소저합금강의 내식성에 관한 연구 (Characteristics on Corrosion Resistance of Medium High Carbon Low Alloy Steels using Plasma Nitriding Process)

  • The characteristics of corrosion resistance for the surface of medium high carbon steels and low alloy steels utilizing as manufacturing the machinery structures and machining tools and treating by plasma/ion nitriding process have been studied in terms of electrochemical polarization behav-iors including corrosion potential(Ecorr) anodic polarization trends and polarization resistance(Rp) The seven base materials showed a clear passivation behavior for the polarization tests in the ASTM standard solution 1N ${H_2){SO_4}$ Although the treated surface by plasma nitriding for the seven test materials showed a significant increase in hardness the treatment gave a detri-mental effect in corrosion resistance. The various characteristics including corrosion potential polarization curves microstructures corrosion current polarization resistance among non-treat-ed nitriding and/or soft-nitriding treated specimens have been investigated and some of the mechanisms discussed.

Angle of View Polarization Characterization of Liquid Crystal Displays and Their Components

  • LCD performance is generally evaluated in terms of luminance and color versus viewing angle. In the present paper, we show that this type of display can be favorably characterized in terms of polarization. We show that ELDIM EZContrast instrument which is routinely used for viewing angle measurements can be upgrade for measuring the polarization state of the light at each incidence and azimuth angle. More precisely, the degree of polarization of light, its ellipticity and polarization direction can be measured at each incidence angle between 0 and $88^{\circ}$ and for all the azimuth angles (from 0 to $360^{\circ}$). Important differences between the displays can be detected and related to their internal structures when luminance and color profiles are quite similar. The same setup can also be used to characterize optical components of the LCDs.
