  • This paper deals with the characteristics of soil ionization affecting the dynamic performance of grounding systems under lightning impulse voltage. A concentric hemispherical electrode system was employed in order to facilitate the field calculation and analysis of the experimental results. The parameters such as the ionization threshold and breakdown field intensity, the pre-ionization and the post ionization resistances, the time-lag to ionization, the transient impedance, the equivalent ionized radius for various soil media were measured and analyzed. The dynamic characteristics of ionization processes under lightning impulse voltage are strongly dependent on the types of soil and water content. As a result, a soil ionization reduces the ground resistance and there is a little effect of applied impulse polarity on the soil ionization threshold field intensity. Although the ionization threshold field intensity of wet clay with 30% water content is the highest, its ionized zone was found to be the smallest amongst the test samples.

  • This paper describes the insulation breakdown characteristics of 72.5 kV dry-air insulated switchgear under development for installation in a wind power generator when a lightning impulse voltage is applied. For this study, the weak point of insulation due to the electric field concentration of the switchgear's internal shape was identified by finite element method (FEM) analysis, and the shape was actually simulated to measure and analyze the polarity of the lightning impulse voltage and the insulation breakdown characteristics according to the gas pressure at dry-air pressures of 0.1 Mpa to 0.45 Mpa. This study derives the maximum electric field with a 50 % discharge probability for each switchgear internal insulation vulnerable point based on the actual test and electrical simulation, which will be useful as reference data for supplementing and changing insulation design in the future.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety of a wire connector fabricated for the effective installation of a lighting fixture including its contact resistance, insulation resistance, withstanding voltage characteristics, etc., and to provide the basis for the analysis and judgment of PL(Product Liability) dispute by presenting a damage pattern due to a general flame and overcurrent. This study applied the Korean Standard (KS) for the incombustibility test of the connector using a general flame and performed an overcurrent characteristics test of the connector using PCITS (Primary Current Injection Test System). The contact resistance of the housing connector was measured using a high resistance meter and the insulation resistance was measured using a multimeter. In addition, a supply voltage of AC 1,500V for testing the withstanding voltage characteristics was applied to both ends of the connector. Measurement was performed on 5 specimens and the measured values were used as a basis for judgment. Since the connector is fabricated in the form of a housing, it can be connected and separated easily and has a structure that allows no foreign material to enter. In addition, since it has a structure that allows wires to be connected only when their polarity is identical, any misconnection that may occur during installation can be prevented. When the incombustibility test was performed by applying a general flame to the connector, it showed outstanding incombustibility characteristics and the blade and blade holder connected to the housing remained firmly secured even after the insulation sheath (PVC) was completely destroyed by fire. In addition, the mechanism of the damaged connecting wire showed a comparatively uniform carbonization pattern and it was found that some residual melted insulation material was attached to both ends. In the accelerated life test (ALT) to which approximately 500% of the rated current was applied, the connector damage proceeded in the order of white smoke generation, wire separation, spark occurrence and carbonization. That is, it could be seen that the connector damaged by overcurrent lost its own metallic color with traces of discoloration and carbonization. The contact resistance of the connector at a normal state was 2.164mV/A on average. The contact resistance measured after the high temperature test was 3.258mV/A. In addition, the insulation resistance after the temperature test was completed was greater than $10G\Omega$ and the withstanding voltage test result showed that no insulation breakdown occurred to all specimens showing stable withstanding voltage and insulation resistance characteristics.

  • A gap between a $Al_2O_3/Fe$ thermite and lower head vessel is formed in the lower-plenum arrested vessel attack(LAVA) experiment which is the 1st phase study of simulation of naturally arrested vessel attack in vessel(SONATA-IV). The gap measurement using a conventional ultrasonic method would be lack of a reliability due to the structure complexity and the metallurgical grain size change of the lower head HAZ occurred by a thermite $Al_2O_3/Fe$ melt or a $Al_2O_3$ melt at $2300^{\circ}C$. The grain echoes having false signals and lower S/N ratio signals are detected due to a multiple scattering, a mode conversion and an attenuation of a ultrasonic resulted from at the interface of increased grain size zone. In this test, the signals pattern was classified to understand the behavior of the ultrasonic in a multi-layer specimen of solid-liquid-solid of assuming that the thermite and the lower head vessel is immersed. The polarity threshold algorithm of frequency diversity gives us the enhancement about 6dB of the ratio S/N.

  • We present the relationship between vector magnetic field parameters and solar major flare occurrence rate. Based on this, we are developing a forecast model of major flare (M and X-class) occurrence rate within a day using hourly vector magnetic field data of Space-weather HMI Active Region Patch (SHARP) from May 2010 to April 2017. In order to reduce the projection effect, we use SHARP data whose longitudes are within ${\pm}60$ degrees. We consider six SHARP magnetic parameters (the total unsigned current helicity, the total photospheric magnetic free energy density, the total unsigned vertical current, the absolute value of the net current helicity, the sum of the net current emanating from each polarity, and the total unsigned magnetic flux) with high F-scores as useful predictors of flaring activity from Bobra and Couvidat (2015). We have considered two cases. In case 1, we have divided the data into two sets separated in chronological order. 75% of the data before a given day are used for setting up a flare model and 25% of the data after that day are used for test. In case 2, the data are divided into two sets every year in order to reduce the solar cycle (SC) phase effect. All magnetic parameters are divided into 100 groups to estimate the corresponding flare occurrence rates. The flare identification is determined by using LMSAL flare locations, giving more numbers of flares than the NGDC flare list. Major results are as follows. First, major flare occurrence rates are well correlated with six magnetic parameters. Second, the occurrence rate ranges from 0.001 to 1 for M and X-class flares. Third, the logarithmic values of flaring rates are well approximated by two linear equations with different slopes: steeper one at lower values and lower one at higher values. Fourth, the sum of the net current emanating from each polarity gives the minimum RMS error between observed flare rates and predicted ones. Fifth, the RMS error for case 2, which is taken to reduce SC phase effect, are smaller than those for case 1.

  • This research was carried out to establish the large quantity propagation system for Kalopanax pictus using root cutting. The results are as follows. As there was no significant difference in the promotion of adventitious shoot development from the root cuttings of Kalopanax pictus among kinds (IBA, NAA and Kinetin) and concentrations (0 to 2000 mg/L) of growth regulators, no application is recommended, which showed more than 90% of shoot development. Horizontal and vertical placement of rooting showed more than 93% of shoot occurrence, but the latter showed more desirable growth traits in the number of shoot development, number of leaf, petiole length, and leaf length and leaf width Polarity was observed and thus normal vertical placement of root cutting is preferred. However, root cuttings placed upside down showed the shoot development at the distal end, which indicates further sophisticated test is necessary to investigate this phenomenon.

  • Amino acid substitution matrices are essential tools for protein sequence analysis, homology sequence search in protein databases and multiple sequence alignment. The PAM matrix was the first widely used amino acid substitution matrix. The BLOSUM series then succeeded the PAM matrix. Most substitution matrixes were developed by using the statistical frequency of substitution between each amino acid at blocks representing groups of protein families or related proteins. However, substitution of amino acids is based on the similarity of physiochemical properties of each amino acid. In this study, a new approach was used to obtain major physiochemical properties in multiple sequence alignment. Frequency of amino acid substitution in multiple sequence alignment database and selected attributes of amino acids in physiochemical properties database were merged. This merged data showed the major physiochemical properties through principle components analysis. Using factor analysis, these four principle components were interpreted as flexibility of electronic movement, polarity, negative charge and structural flexibility. Applying these four components, BAPS was constructed and validated for accuracy. When comparing receiver operated characteristic ($ROC_{50}$) values, BAPS scored slightly lower than BLOSUM and PAM. However, when evaluating for accuracy by comparing results from multiple sequence alignment with the structural alignment results of two test data sets with known three-dimensional structure in the homologous structure alignment database, the result of the test for BAPS was comparatively equivalent or better than results for prior matrices including PAM, Gonnet, Identity and Genetic code matrix.

  • Paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic data of Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks from the Euiseong area indicate that the stable components of remanence are carried by single and pseudo-single domain magnetite, with the exception of the Shinyangdong Formation which has been remagnetized. The Hayang Group, except for the remagnetized Shinyangdong Formation, yields the mean characteristic direction of $D/I=22.5^{\circ}/57.2^{\circ}$ (${\alpha}_{95}=4.6^{\circ}$, N=14 sites) and the pole position is $72.0^{\circ}N$, $206.4^{\circ}E$ ($dp/dm=4.9^{\circ}/6.7^{\circ}$). The Yucheon Group shows two polarities and the mean characteristic direction of $D/I=351.2^{\circ}/60.5^{\circ}$ (${\alpha}_{95}=11.2^{\circ}$, N= 19 sites) and the pole position is $81.3^{\circ}N$, $79.0^{\circ}E$ ($dp/dm=13.0^{\circ}/17.0^{\circ}$). The mean directions of both the Hayang and the Yucheon Groups are supported by the McElhinny's fold test at the 99% confidence level and that of the Yucheon Group by a reversal test at the 95% confidence level. A magnetostratigraphic correlation between polarities of the study formations and the Geomagnetic Time Scale indicates that the Hayang Group can be correlated to the Cretaceous Long Normal Superchron (CLNS), and the Yucheon Group to the boundary between the CLNS and the Polarity Chron 33R or later boundaries between normal and reverse polarities. Comparison of the paleopoles from this study with those from the surrounding areas both within the Gyeongsang basin and in the northeastern Asia indicates that the study area was not undergone significant tectonic rotations with respect to the other parts of the Gyeongsang basin and that the Korean Peninsula was the part of the single terrane of the northeastern Asia at least since the CLNS. The Yucheon Group can be divided into four sub-groups based on the paleomagnetic data, suggesting that there were at least four times of volcanic activities in the study area.

  • Fault-plane solutions of the December 13, 1996 Yeongweol earthquake with magnitude 4.5 is obtained using the grid test technique. Thirty polarities of P waves recorded at KMA, KIGAM, KSRS and JAPAN stations are used for the event. The obtained fault plane solution shows strike-slip motion with significant amount of thrust component. The orientation of the fault is 180±20° in strike, 50±5° in dip and 150±5° in rake, or 292±3° in strike, 65±5° in dip and 30±10° in rake. These solutions are similar to those of earthquakes occurred at Sagju (Jan. 7, 1980), Pohang (Apr. 15, 1981) and offshore Gunsan (Oct. 6, 1976). The compressional axis of the stress field is trending from ENE to WSW, which is consistent with the previously defined typical regional tectonic stress orientation in and around Korean Peninsula.

  • Data errors according to the various noises caused in the satellite communication links are corrected by the Viterbi decoding algorithm which has extreme error correcting capability. In this paper, we designed and implemented a convolutional encoder and Viterbi decoder ASIC which is used to encode the input data at the transmit side and correct the errors of the received data at the receive side for use in the VSAT communication system. And this chip may be used in any BPSK, QPSK, or OQPSK transmission system. The ambiguity resolver corrects PSK modem ambiguities by delaying, interting, and/or exchanging code symbol to restore their original sequence and polarity. In case of previous decoding system, ambiguity state(AS) of data is resolved by external control logic and extra redundancy data are needed to resolve AS. But, by adopting decoder proposed in this paper, As of data is resolved automatically by internal logic of decoder in case of continuous mode, and by external As line withoug extra redudancy data in burst mode case. So, decoding parts are simple in continuous mode and transmission efficiency is increased in bust mode. The features of this chip are full duplex operation with independent transmit and receive control and clocks, start/stop inputs for use in burst mode systems, loopback function to verify encoder and decoder, and internal or external control to resolve ambinguity state. For verification of the function and performance of a fabricated ASIC chip, we equiped this chip in the Central and Remote Earth Station of VSAT system, and did the performance test using the commerical INTELSAT VII under the real satellite link environmens. The results of test were demonstrated the superiority of performance.
