  • We consider a receiving node, located at the origin, and a Poisson point process (PPP) that models the locations of the desired transmitter as well as the interferers. Interference is known to be non-Gaussian in this scenario. The capacity bounds for additive non-Gaussian channels depend not only on the power of interference (i.e., up to second order statistics) but also on its entropy power which is influenced by higher order statistics as well. Therefore, a complete statistical characterization of interference is required to obtain the capacity bounds. While the statistics of sum of signal and interference is known in closed form, the statistics of interference highly depends on the location of the desired transmitter. In this paper, we show that there is a tradeoff between entropy power of interference on the one hand and signal and interference power on the other hand which have conflicting effects on the channel capacity. We obtain closed form results for the cumulants of the interference, when the desired transmitter node is an arbitrary neighbor of the receiver. We show that to find the cumulants, joint statistics of distances in the PPP will be required which we obtain in closed form. Using the cumulants, we approximate the interference entropy power and obtain bounds on the capacity of the channel between an arbitrary transmitter and the receiver. Our results provide insight and shed light on the capacity of links in a Poisson network. In particular, we show that, in a Poisson network, the closest hop is not necessarily the highest capacity link.

  • The Poisson point process (PPP) is widely used in wireless network modeling and performance analysis because it can provide tractable results for heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets) analysis. However, it cannot accurately reflect the spatial distribution characteristics of the actual base stations (BSs). Considering the fact that the distribution of macro base stations (MBSs) is exclusive, the deployment of MBSs is modeled by the Matérn hard-core point process (MHCPP), and the deployment of pico base stations (PBSs) is modeled by PPP. This paper studies the performance of multiantenna HetNets and improves the energy efficiency (EE) of HetNets by optimizing the transmit power of PBSs. We use a simple approximate method to study the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) distribution in two-tier MHCPP-PPP HetNets and derive the coverage probability, average data rate and EE of HetNets. Then, an optimization algorithm is proposed to improve the EE of HetNets. Finally, three transmission technologies are simulated and analyzed. The results show that multiantenna transmission has better system performance than single antenna transmission and that selecting the appropriate transmit power for a PBS can effectively improve the EE of the system. In addition, two-tier MHCPP-PPP HetNets have higher EE than two-tier PPP-PPP HetNets.

  • We consider a mobile content delivery network (mCDN) in which special mobile devices designated as caching servers (caching-server device: CSD) can provide mobile stations with popular contents on demand via device-to-device (D2D) communication links. On the assumption that mobile CSD's are randomly distributed by a Poisson point process (PPP), an optimization problem is formulated to determine the probability of storing the individual content in each server in a manner that minimizes the average caching failure rate. Further, we present a low-complexity search algorithm, optimum dual-solution searching algorithm (ODSA), for solving this optimization problem. We demonstrate that the proposed ODSA takes fewer iterations, on the order of O(log N) searches, for caching N contents in the system to find the optimal solution, as compared to the number of iterations in the conventional subgradient method, with an acceptable accuracy in practice. Furthermore, we identify the important characteristics of the optimal caching policies in the mobile environment that would serve as a useful aid in designing the mCDN.

  • In Bayesian multi-target tracking, the Poisson multi-Bernoulli mixture (PMBM) filter is a state-of-the-art filter based on the methodology of random finite set which is a conjugate prior composed of Poisson point process (PPP) and multi-Bernoulli mixture (MBM). In order to improve the random finite set-based filter utilized in multi-target tracking of sensor scanning, this paper introduces the Poisson multi-Bernoulli mixture filter into time-matching Bayesian filtering framework and derive a tractable and principled method, namely: the time-matching Poisson multi-Bernoulli mixture (TM-PMBM) filter. We also provide the Gaussian mixture implementation of the TM-PMBM filter for linear-Gaussian dynamic and measurement models. Subsequently, we compare the performance of the TM-PMBM filter with other RFS filters based on time-matching method with different birth models under directional continuous scanning and out-of-order discontinuous scanning. The results of simulation demonstrate that the proposed filter not only can effectively reduce the influence of sampling time diversity, but also improve the estimated accuracy of target state along with cardinality.

  • In this paper, we investigate the system performance of a cooperative relaying system of Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with successive interference cancellation (SIC), which is considered promising application in fifth generation (5G) cellular networks. Previous studies have focused on the selected relays, however we include the maxmin relay selection and derive analytical outage probability of opportunistic incremental relaying systems. For the realistic mobile environment, the distributions of relays are modeled as a homogeneous Poisson point process (PPP). And maximal ratio combining (MRC) is adapted to improve the system performance at the destination node. Analytical results demonstrate the outage probability improves with the near/far user power ratio, and the cooperative relaying scheme can achieve low outage probability in comparison to the no relaying scheme. It is also conformed that the increase of the intensity of PPP cause higher gains of the spacial diversity and hence the performance improves.

  • In this paper, we derive the expression of the cache hitting probability with random caching policy and propose the joint optimization algorithm based on difference of convex algorithm (DCA) in the three-tier caching heterogeneous cellular network assisted by macro base stations, helpers and users. Under the constraint of the caching capacity of caching devices, we establish the optimization problem to maximize the cache hitting probability of the network. In order to solve this problem, a convex function is introduced to convert the nonconvex problem to a difference of convex (DC) problem and then we utilize DCA to obtain the optimal caching probability of macro base stations, helpers and users for each content respectively. Simulation results show that when the density of caching devices is relatively low, popular contents should be cached to achieve a good performance. However, when the density of caching devices is relatively high, each content ought to be cached evenly. The algorithm proposed in this paper can achieve the higher cache hitting probability with the same density.

  • This paper analyzes the optimal user density and power allocation for Device-to-Device (D2D) communication underlaying cellular networks on multiple bands with the target of maximizing the D2D transmission capacity. The entire network is modeled by Poisson point process (PPP) which based on stochastic geometry. Then in order to ensure the outage probabilities of both cellular and D2D communication, a sum capacity optimization problem for D2D system on multiple bands is proposed. Using convex optimization, the optimal D2D density is obtained in closed-form when the D2D transmission power is determined. Next the optimal D2D transmission power is obtained in closed-form when the D2D density is fixed. Based on the former two conclusions, an iterative algorithm for the optimal D2D density and power allocation on multiple bands is proposed. Finally, the simulation results not only demonstrate the D2D performance, density and power on each band are constrained by cellular communication as well as the interference of the entire system, but also verifies the superiority of the proposed algorithm over sorting-based and removal algorithms.

  • Next Generation Beyond 4G/5G systems will rely on the deployment of small cells over conventional macrocells for achieving high spectral efficiency and improved coverage performance, especially for indoor and hotspot environments. In such heterogeneous networks, the expected performance gains can only be derived with the use of efficient interference coordination schemes, such as Fractional Frequency Reuse (FFR), which is very attractive for its simplicity and effectiveness. In this work, femtocells are deployed according to a spatial Poisson Point Process (PPP) over hexagonally shaped, 6-sector macro base stations (MeNBs) in an uncoordinated manner, operating in hybrid mode. A newly introduced intermediary region prevents cross-tier, cross-boundary interference and improves user equipment (UE) performance at the boundary of cell center and cell edge. With tools of stochastic geometry, an analytical framework for the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) distribution is developed to evaluate the performance of all UEs in different spatial locations, with consideration to both co-tier and cross-tier interference. Using the SINR distribution framework, average network throughput per tier is derived together with a newly proposed harmonic mean, which ensures fairness in resource allocation amongst all UEs. Finally, the FFR network parameters are optimized for maximizing average network throughput, and the harmonic mean using a fair resource assignment constraint. Numerical results verify the proposed analytical framework, and provide insights into design trade-offs between maximizing throughput and user fairness by appropriately adjusting the spatial partitioning thresholds, the spectrum allocation factor, and the femtocell density.

  • Depending on the type of Tx-Rx pairs, VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) for maritime communication is expected to employ the different frequency channels. Load imbalance between the different channels turns out to be a critical problem for the multi-hop communication using Ad-hoc Self-Organizing TDMA (ASO-TDMA) MAC protocol, which has been proposed to provide the connectivity between land station and remote ship stations. In order to handle the inter-channel load imbalance problem, we consider a model of the stochastic geomety in this paper. After analyzing the spatial reuse efficiency in each hop region by the given model, we show that the resource utility can be maximized by balancing the inter-channel traffic load with optimal resource allocation in each hop region.
