  • In this study, the relationships among cognitive conflict, situational interest, and conceptual change in studying boiling point were investigated. The differences in the relationships by gender were also investigate. Students of 7th grade(N=370) participated in this study. First, a preconception test was administered to choose students who possessed the misconception studied. After presenting anomalous data, test of response to anomalous data and state interest test were administered. After the instruction with a CAI program, a conception test was administered immediately. The conception test was administered again as a retention test four weeks later. The scores of both cognitive conflicts and state interest test were found to be significantly correlated with the scores of the conception test and the retention test. The results of multiple regression analysis indicated that state interest was significantly more important than cognitive conflict in prediction the degrees of conceptual change and retention of conception. For male students, state interest was the only significant predictor of conceptual change and retention of conception. In contrast, cognitive conflict was the only significant predictor for female students.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the elementary pre-service teachers' interest in biological topics and activities. The instrument to survey the interest of them consists of 8 domains containing 27 topic items and 7 domains containing 12 activity items(three-point from 0 to 2 Likert scale). Data were collected from 108 pre-service teachers. The interest level in the topics was high, but the interest level in the activities was average. There was not different between interest levels of females and males in both topic and activity components (p > .05). Among the topics, the 'genetics' domain correlated strongly with the domains of 'nutrition and digestion', 'circulation', 'respiration' and 'nervous system', and the 'respiration' domain correlated with the 'circulation' domain(r >.450, p<.01). The correlation between the domains of 'out-of class experience activity' and 'visual information activity', and 'experimental performance following procedure' and 'discussing and debating'(r >.450, p<.01). This results suggested that the educational contents including learning materials and experiential activities be developed to activate the interest of elementary pre-service teachers in biology.

  • We consider the problem of optimal bandwidth choice for nonparametric classification, based on kernel density estimators, where the problem of interest is distinguishing between two univariate distributions. When the densities intersect at a single point, optimal bandwidth choice depends on curvatures of the densities at that point. The problem of empirical bandwidth selection and classifying data in the tails of a distribution are also addressed.

  • In this study an advanced domain decomposition method is suggested in order to construct surface models from very large amount of points. In this method the spatial domain of interest that is occupied by the input set of points is divided in repetitive manner. First, the space is divided into smaller domains where the problem can be solved independently. Then each subdomain is again divided into much smaller domains where the problem can be solved locally. These local solutions of subdivided domains are blended together to obtain a solution of each subdomain using partition of unity function. Then the solutions of subdomains are merged together in order to construct whole surface model. The suggested methods are conceptually very simple and easy to implement. Since RDDM(Repetitive Domain Decomposition Method) is effective in the computation time and memory consumption, the present study is capable of providing a fast and accurate reconstructions of complex shapes from large amount of point data containing millions of points. The effectiveness and validity of the suggested methods are demonstrated by performing numerical experiments for the various types of point data.

  • The most of navigation services these days, are designed in order to just provide a shortest path from current position to destination for a user. Several navigation services provides not only the path but some fragmentary information about its point, but, the data tends to be highly restricted because it's quality and quantity totally depends on service provider's providing policy. In this paper, we describe the folksonomy POI(Point of interest) recommender system using mashup in order to provide the information that is more useful to the user. The POI recommender system mashes-up the user's folksonomy data that stacked by user with using external folksonomy service(like Flickr) with others' in order to provide more useful information for the user. POI recommender system recommends others' tag data that is evaluated with the user folksonomy similarity. Using folksonomy mahup makes the services can provide more information that is applied the users' karma. By this, we show how to deal with the data's restrictions of quality and quantity.

  • Recently, semantic trajectories which combine GPS positions and POIs(Point of Interests) become more popular in order to expand location based services. To construct semantic trajectories, the existing algorithms exploit the extent information of POIs described as polygons and find overlapping regions between GPS positions and the extents. However, the algorithms are not applicable in the condition where the extent information is not provided such as in Google Map, Naver Map, OpenStreetMap and most of the open geographic information systems. In this paper, we provide a novel algorithm to construct semantic trajectories only with GPS positions and POI points but without POI extents.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the high school students' interests and and perceptions about the soil concepts. The data were obtained from 72 boys and 82 girls at a high school in Daegu area. The questionnaires were developed 8 questions for students' interest and 10 questions for students' understanding. The results of this study were as follows. In the examination of students' interest on the soil concepts, boys showed 3.2point(64.9%) out of 5point and girls showed 3.2point(64.6%) out of 5 point. Furthermore, a percentage of correct answers for understanding on the soil concepts was 47.4%. In detail, Boys had 48.2% and girls had 46.6%, boys showed higher understanding about soil concepts than girls. And students understood soil concepts by a visible side, to approach the soil concepts from a biological point of view, rather than a geologic one. Also high school students didn't think soil concepts to consist of minerals and rocks from a geologic point of view. Correlation between interest and understanding on the soil concepts was very weak by showing r=.170(p<.05).

  • The purpose of this paper is to find various disparity factors in conjunction with situations and contexts of the contents that cause viewer's discomfort, which is to make a content production guideline for viewer's safety, eventually. As a methodology, we extract the experimental data by letting various viewers push a pre-defined key as long as they feel discomfort during watching stereo 3D contents. For each contents, we extract the disparities and disparity changes for the focal point, vicinity of the focal point (ROI, region of interest), and the whole image. For each contents, each point or part of contents is analyzed to find the factors causing discomfort with the two prepared data with watching the contents in 3D. Then, all the analyzed data are re-analyzed to find the strength of each factor. The results from the analyses are explained from the factors having relatively high strength first. It includes the factors that are not known as well as the ones that we can already guess.

  • Point-of-Interest(POI) recommendation systems suggest the most interesting POIs to users considering the current location and time. With the rapid development of smartphones, internet-of-things, and location-based social networks, it has become feasible to accumulate huge amounts of user POI visits. Therefore, instant recommendation of interesting POIs at a given time is being widely recognized as important. To increase the performance of POI recommendation systems, several studies extracting users' POI sequential preference from POI check-in data, which is intended for implicit feedback, have been suggested. However, when constructing a model utilizing sequential preference, the model encounters possibility of data distortion because of a low number of observed check-ins which is attributed to intensified data sparsity. This paper suggests refinement of temporal intervals based on data confidence. When building a POI recommendation system using temporal intervals to model the POI sequential preference of users, our methodology reduces potential data distortion in the dataset and thus increases the performance of the recommendation system. We verify our model's effectiveness through the evaluation with the Foursquare and Gowalla dataset.
