The traditional theory regarding the pivot point of a ship during maneuvering, so called apparent pivot point, is located nearly at 1/3 ship's length from the bow when the ship is moving ahead, and between 1/4 ship's length from the stern and the rudder post when going astern. The pivot point is sometimes considered to be the centre of leverage for forces acting on the ship. However, the pivot point is located out of ship due to strong lateral force, such as current and it is very inconvenient to use during maneuvering a ship. In this paper firstly, pivot points due to ship's condition are investigated carefully. And then the center of lateral resistance used at the present are determined. While a new lateral force is added, we can compare the pivot point with the center of lateral forces. Finally, we will suggest the center of all lateral forces for maneuvering instead of pivot point. Especially, it will be very helpful for pilots to handle ships in simulation.

In this paper the lubrication performances of line pivoted pad thrust bearing and point pivoted pad thrust bearing are studied by a numerical analysis. The running characteristic parameters such as nondimensional load carrying capacity nondimensional friciton power loss nondimensional flow rate and film thickness ratios are calculated for various circumferential pivot positions. The results provide a usdful data for the selection of pivot position in a pivoted and thrust bearing.

Purpose: Reduction malarplasty is one of the common aesthetic procedures performed in the Orient. We have analyzed effective operative methods according to the pivot point for the osteotomy and reposition of the zygoma for reduction malarplasty after confirming the shapes of the individual zygomas. Methods: Thirty-six patients had been received malarplasty over the last 10 years. The average follow-up period was 16 months. We categorized the patients into three groups according to their prominent appearance features. Group I had a prominently protruded zygomatic body, group II had a prominently protruded zygomatic arch, and group III had a prominently protruded body and zygomatic arch. In the group I, two parallel oblique osteotomies on the body, the middle portion was removed, and with the zygomatic arch as the pivot point, the body was repositioned inwards. In the group II, the zygomatic body and arch osteotomy is performed, with the body as the pivot point, and the arch is depressed medially. In the group III, using the two aforementioned methods, the zygoma was repositioned medially. In each case, postoperative complications and patients satisfaction over the surgery were surveyed. Results: Each group had 25, 5 and 12 patients respectively. No significant complications were found except for one patient who experienced a non-union of zygomatic bone. In the case of group I, four patients underwent a secondary operation. Conclusion: Reduction malarplasty is popular as an effective facial contouring surgery. In order to obtain more effective results,however, the zygomatic shape should be identified, and appropriately repositioned by different operative technique according to pivot points.

For designing working devices of construction equipment, it is necessary to consider not only sufficient working ability but also available working range. Therefore, it is important to select the appropriate pivot positions of links. This paper presents a study on selection of pivot points of links used in construction equipment. To analyze the effect of each pivot point, a design program for pivot selection is developed. A conventional pivot design method requires a complicated process because it needs to create a certain working position manually to evaluate its performance. However, the developed program includes an automatic link assembly algorithm; thus, the working device can easily be analyzed by using pivot information of links. The developed program also included a kinematic/static analysis module and characteristic analysis algorithms. Therefore, it is possible to easily analyze a working device model created through the automatic assembly algorithm, whereby users can easily analyze the effect of each link pivot point for the actual product design.

This paper proposes a modified MI-SVM algorithm by considering data distribution. The previous MI-SVM algorithm seeks the margin by considering the "most positive" instance in a positive bag. Positive instances included in positive bags are located in a similar area in a feature space. In order to reflect this characteristic of positive instances, the proposed method selects the "most positive" instance by calculating the distance between each instance in the bag and a pivot point that is the intersection point of all positive instances. This paper suggests two ways to select the "most positive" pivot point in the training data. First, the algorithm seeks the "most positive" pivot point along the current predicted parameter, and then selects the nearest instance in the bag as a representative from the pivot point. Second, the algorithm finds the "most positive" pivot point by using a Diverse Density framework. Our experiments on 12 benchmark multi-instance data sets show that the proposed method results in higher performance than the previous MI-SVM algorithm.

This paper describes aerodynamic performance enhancement of cycloidal rotor according to the blade pivot point movement and the blade preset angle adjustment. Cycloidal blade system which consists of several blades rotating about an axis in parallel direction and changing its pitch angle periodically, is a propulsion mechanism of a new concept vertical take off and landing aircraft, cyclocopter. Based on the designed geometry of cyclocopter, numerical analysis was carried out by a general purpose commercial CFD program, STAR-CD. According to tills analysis, the efficiency of cycloidal rotor could be improved more than 15% by the introduced methods.

The thermohydrodynamic analysis of tilting pad thrust bearing is studied with the consideration of elastic effect of pad. Reynolds equation, deflection equation and energy equation are solved simultaneously with the boundary conditions. Reynolds equation is modified as the approximate form. Pads are supported by the line pivot and the point pivot respectively. Pads are considered as the flat planes. Effects of pad thickness on the performance of thrust bearing are emphasized and the performances of rigid pad and elastic pad are compared. Effects of inlet temperature on performances of the bearing are compared. Dynamic characteristics of both pad supported by line and point pivot are compared.

The concept design of Flexible Seal for thrust vector control of solid motor was performed. Through the concept design, the optimum pivot point of flexible seal, cross-section configuration of flexible seal and thermal protection system from combustion gas was decided. The pivot point of flexible seal has aft pivot type and cross-section view is conical type. For satisfying a spring torque rate, the shear modulus of rubber has the value of under about 0.6MPa and failure shear stress has over about 2.5MPa.

This paper describes a new pivoting technique to improve bearing performance in pivoted pad thrust bearings. This new technique adjusts the pivot line in a line pivoted pad thrust bearing to be parallel to the trailing edge of a sector shaped pad. Bearing performance factors such as load carrying capacity, frictional torque and flow rate are numerically investigated for conventional point-pivoted and line-pivoted pads and for the new parallel-line pivoting technique. It is shown that the load carving capacity can be maximized with the new technique.

The oriental medical doctors who had studied Shang Han Run thought highly of meridians and until now it was generally known that the chapter of heat in the Plain Questions of Emperor's Classic Internal Medicine(ECIM: 皇帝內經, 素門, 熱論) was the basis of Shang Han Run. The chapter of heat in the Plain Questions of ECIM was the first text in which the basic theory on six-channels according to the types of illness was introduced. In my point of view, the theory of treating six-channels had close relation to the Chapter of Channels in Miraculous Pivot of ECIM(皇帝內經, 靈樞ㆍ經脈篇) as well as the chapter of heat in the Plain Questions of ECIM. Therefore I took a look at the origin of treating six-channels in Shang Han Lun and illuminated again the meaning to compare the parts of in Shang Han Lun with the Chapter of Channels in Miraculous Pivot of ECIM. Conclusion : The symptoms of TaiYin-channel(太陰經) in the Chapter of Channels in Miraculous Pivot of ECIM were, for the most part, accord with those of TaiYin-disease in Shang Han Lun. Furthermore, the symptoms in Shang Han Lun were explained definitely and in detail. Therefore the theory of Shang Han Lun has been developed on the basis of ECIM with the changes of the times. TaiYin-disease implied symptoms of pi-spleen meridian(脾經) and fei-lung meridian(肺經). Therefore Shang Han Lun was the foundation of treatment based on overall analysis of signs and symptoms(辨證論治) in respect of meridian as well as the text in which the steps of infectious diseases(外感病) of human bodies were explained.
