Optimization of Design Parameters of a Pneumatic System (공압시스템의 설계 파라미터 최적화)

  • This paper presents optimization of a pneumatic control system whose design parameters have been optimized so that the desired dynamic characteristics of cylinder position was obtained. The pneumatic system is used as transferring and stacking equipment for solid freeform fabrication system which has been widely used in design verification applications. The pneumatic system mainly consists of pneumatic control valves and cylinders. The system was modeled by using several principles for pneumatic components. The system was optimized to obtain dynamic performance with enough damping to reduce cylinder vibration. A fuzzy controller has been applied to fulfill the dynamic performance requirements of the pneumatic system. The simulation results show that the fuzzy controller is more effective than a PD controller.

Position Control of a Pneumatic Cylinder Considering Friction Compensation (마찰력 보상을 고려한 공기압 실린더의 위치제어)

  • The paper describes a technique that compensates a friction in pneumatic cylinder to perform the position control. The friction is one of the most common nonlinearities present in pneumatic actuating systems. For accurate position control and low velocity control, control strategies usually rely on accurate estimation of friction. This paper presents a observer to estimate the friction force in the pneumatic cylinder from the pressures in cylinder chambers. Also, the stiction compensation of a pneumatic cylinder is obtained by adding pulses to the control signal using impulsive control. The characteristics of the pulses in impulsive control are determined from the control action. The simulation results are proved that the method proposed here is effective.

Development of Offshore Construction ROV System applying Pneumatic Gripper (공압 gripper를 적용한 해양 건설 ROV 시스템 개발)

  • The safety of marine construction workers and marine pollution problems are occurring due to large-scale offshore construction. In particular, underwater construction work in the sea has a higher risk than other work, so it is necessary to apply an unmanned alternative system that considers the safety of the workers. In this paper, the ROV system for offshore construction has been developed for underwater unmanned work. A monitoring system was developed for position control through the control of underwater propellants, pneumatic gripper, and monitoring of underwater work. As a result of the performance evaluation, the underwater movement speed of the ROV was evaluated to be 0.89 m/s, and it was confirmed that the maximum load of the pneumatic gripper was 80 kg. In addition, the network bandwidth required for underwater ROV control and underwater video streaming was evaluated to be more than 300Mbps, wired communication at 92.7 ~ 95.0Mbit/s at 205m, and wireless communication at 78.3 ~ 84.8Mbit/s.

  • In order to improve the accuracy in the field of simiconductor and LCD research equipment, the demand of XYZ stage which is possible to control X axis, Y axis and Z axis has been increased steadly in place of the existing XY stage which is only practicable to X & Y axis positioning control. This paper presents a new pneumatic actuator for Micro-positioning control in the XYZ stage. Air pressure in a pneumatic actuator is controlled by the E/P Regulator. The control range of pneumatic actuator is about 100 micro-meters and it's construction concept is easy to apply a practical state

  • This paper is concerned with effective operating method of pneumatic on-off valves for improving position control accuracy, valve life-time and position settling time using modified pulse width modulation with dead-zone (MPWMD). The pneumatic system using on-off valves has advantage of simple construction and low cost compared with a system with servo-valves. The performance of the proposed control method is investigated experimentally for the position control of a pneumatic cylinder using on-off valves. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm for valve operation can be used to obtain fast and accurate position control compared to the conventional PWMD algorithm. It is also shown that the use of the proposed MPWMD algorithm for the position control significantly reduces the number of valve switching and noise.

  • The goal of this paper is to improve the position control performance of pneumatic rotary actuator with variable brake using Magneto-Rheological Fluid. The air compressibility and the lack of damping of the pneumatic actuator bring the dynamic delay of the pressure response and cause the oscillatory motion. In this study, a variable rotary brake comprising Magneto-Rheological Fluid is equipped to the joint of a pneumatic manipulator. Experiments of step response have proved that the transient response of the manipulator could be improved compared with that of the conventional control algorithm by using a phase plane switching control algorithm.

Accurate Positioning with a Pneumatic Driving Apparatus (공기압 구동장치를 이용한 정밀위치제어)

  • The accurate position control of pneumatic driving apparatus is considered in this paper. In pneumatically actuated positioning systems, accurate positioning as an electrical servo has been known to be difficult because of the friction force and compressibility of the air. For good control performance of the pneumatic system, an actuator mounted with externally pressurized air bearings is produced to compensate for friction force. For the controller design, the governing equation of the pneumatic driving apparatus is derived. In order to reduce the nonlinear characteristics of the control valve, linearized control input is derived from the relation between the effective area of the valve and the control input. The experimental results are presented to show the results of the improved position control of the pneumatic driving apparatus.

  • Pneumatic cylinder meter-out driving apparatus is used widely because it is clean, lightweight, and can be easily serviced. In this study an estimation method of energy consumption for pneumatic cylinder meter-out driving apparatus is proposed. The proposed method is derived from state equation and energy equation of air, and, the equation of motion of a moving part of a pneumatic cylinder reflecting the characteristics of the meter-out driving. The effectiveness of the proposed method is proved by simulation study and it demonstrates that the proposed method can evaluate the energy consumption quickly and easily when the parameters of the driving apparatus are changed.

  • Nonlinear seal friction in pneumatic cylinders can impede the performance of pneumatic systems designed for high precision positioning with favorable high speed actuation. The behaviour of an elastomeric piston seals in high speed pneumatic cylinders is analyzed by nonlinear finite element analysis using ABAQUS. The contact pressures, stress and strain distributions and frictional forces of the squeeze type piston seal are simulated with variation of the seal radial installed interference, the operating pressures, friction coefficients and piston rod velocities. The nonlinear finite element model of the squeeze type piston seal is used to predict deformation of a seal, friction force and contact pressure distributions.

A Study on the Measurement Method of Leakage Flow-rate for Pneumatic Cylinder (공압실린더의 누설유량 계측방법에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, a measurement method of leakage flow-rate for pneumatic driving apparatus is proposed. The existing measurement methods of leakage flow-rate of air need disassemble the test component. Therefore, there is no effective method to measure the leakage flow-rate while operating pneumatic driving apparatus. In this study, the leakage flow-rate is measure from the pressure change in an isothermal chamber that can realize isothermal conditions by stuffing steel wool into it. Therefore, wide range of flow-rate could be measured only from the pressure response and the leakage flow-rate can be measured during operating pneumatic driving apparatus. The effectiveness of the proposed method is proved by experimental results.
